Azerbaijan Travel Guide - Totally Unique Experience

Azerbaijan is the largest country in the Caucasus and variously considered part of Europe or Asia. The country lies on the Caspian Sea. It borders Russia and Georgia to the north, Armenia to the west, and Iran in the south. Through the autonomous exclave of Nakhchivan, which lies between Armenia and Iran, Azerbaijan also shares a short border with Turkey.

Azerbaijan is known for having nine of the 11 defined ecological zones. Much of the country is temperate year-round. Nation-wide the average temperature for the year is 14-15°C (57-59°F). The Caucasus Mountains protect the country from the Arctic air masses that affect Russia in winter while the Caspian Sea shields it from the hot, dry air of Central Asia in the summer.

Cabbage, grape leaves, and eggplant wrapped meat (kelem, yarpaq, badimjan - dolmasi), kabab (kebab), rice with different variety of toppings (plov - It is said that plov is the king of Azerbaijani cuisine), gutabs and meatballs (kufta) are some of the several specialties of Azerbaijan.

Some local drinks include ayran (a yogurt drink based on sour milk) and sherbet (made from rose petals or saffron). There are also different sorts of quite decent wines produced from local grapes and a wide array of mineral waters from natural springs. In some areas of Azerbaijan the markets offer lemonades (limonat/dushes) made from pears or taragon.

There is a good selection of hotels in Baku, including many Western chains, but options elsewhere in the country are limited. Prices for the hotels start from USD60 and higher. Rental apartments might be a good choice as they are cheaper than hotels and sometimes are even more comfortable.

Places That Don't Exist: Nagorno Karabakh 3 of 4

There are almost 200 official countries in the world. But there are dozens more breakaway states which are determined to be separate and independent.
The breakaway states have their own rulers, parliaments or warlords, and are home to millions of people, but they're not officially recognised as proper countries by the rest of the world.
Several have their own armies and police forces, and issue passports and even postage stamps which the rest of the world ignores. All of the breakaway states have declared independence after violent struggles with a neighbouring state.
Some now survive peacefully, but others are a magnet for terrorists and weapons smuggling, and have armies ready for a fight. Several could be at the centre of future wars which threaten their regions and the wider world.
In a world of easy adventure tourism, Simon visits breakaway states & unrecognized nations which don't usually feature on the tourist trail: Somaliland, Transniestria, South Ossetia, Taiwan, Abkhazia, Ajaria and Nagorno-Karabkh
Welcome to Places That Don't Exist...

Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia and Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan and Armenia became independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union, but a mountainous area of Azerbaijan called Nagorno-Karabkh (NK) triggered war. Historically it was mainly Armenian Christian, and
when it wanted its own independence, Armenian troops helped the Karabkh army push Azeris out. Azerbaijan is still officially at war over NK, and Simon's journey starts in Azerbaijan on the frontline overlooking NK; he sprints across open ground to avoid sniper fire.
Thousands of people fled during the war. Simon finds Azeri children and the elderly still living in rusty train carriages in a siding. Everywhere Simon goes there are reminders of the war. Everyone mentions it, including the country's top pop star -- a crack-shot with an AK-47.
Simon heads to NK, but the border with Azerbaijan is closed. A massive detour takes him across the border into Georgia, over stunning snowy mountains into Armenia, then south over icy mountain passes into NK. Inside the breakaway state he finds bombed-out villages and abandoned buildings, and Christians who view Muslims with suspicion and fear. In a village locals walk through a minefield in front of him.
Despite mines and war, Simon's guide tells him NK would have the world's highest longevity rate if recognized as a state. A graveyard contains endless people aged more than 100, and there is a suggestion of a live 120-year-old. Simon travels to the NK frontline trenches with Azerbaijan. Very few people go from one side to the other; Simon reflects on the stalemate, and the unlikely prospect of peace.
The programme finishes at a wedding where the electricity has died. Luckily, bride and groom emerge into the light to a rapturous reception.

Beautiful view of Kalbajar region of Azerbaijan

Bir tərəfi bahar, digər tərəfi qış Kəlbəcər / One side is spring, the other side is winter Kalbajar

Kəlbəcər rayonu ilin bütün fəsillərində özünəməxsus gözəlliyi ilə seçilir. Rayon ərazisində müxtəlif təbiət lövhələri bir-biri əvəzləyir. Murov silsiləsində ağ örpəyə bürünmüş dağlar, rayonun içərilərinə getdikcə isə günəşli yaz havası, çayların şırıltısı insanı valeh edir.
Kalbajar region of Azerbaijan is distinguished by its beauty in all seasons. Different nature boards replace each other in the region. Snowy mountains on one side, sunny spring air on the other, mountain rivers fascinate people.
Кельбаджарский район Азербайджана отличается своей красотой во все времена года. Различные доски природы сменяют друг друга в регионе. Снежные горы с одной стороны, солнечный весенний воздух с другой, горные реки завораживают людей.

Attempting to cross the Caucasus - our struggles in Azerbaijan

Our plan was to cross the whole Caucasus range of Azerbaijan, but things most certainly did not go as planned. We saw a lot of beautiful nature but unfortunately also missed a lot due to the bureaucracy and land management/access issues.

Historical monuments of Azerbaijan for tourism

The history of Azerbaijan 's statehood is approximately 5 thousand years old. The first state bodies on the territory of Azerbaijan appeared in late 4,000 - early 3,000 BC. In 1,000 BC there existed Manna, Iskim, Skit, Scyth and such strong states as the Caucasian Albania and Atropatena. These states played a big role in strengthening the culture of government, in the history of economic culture of the country as well as in the uniform nation formation.

Wherever a group of humans begin to settle down and build a life for themselves, they begin to use up the energy and resources within the area as they expand and build further. The environment is sometimes permanently altered when a large group of people move into an area. They construct buildings, and live there for decades and sometimes longer. Occasionally, however, something goes wrong and those people are forced to leave their home behind forever. These domains then become abandoned, lost to the world until explorers come for a visit. Here are ten of the most famous ghost towns in the world.
10. Craco, Italy
Craco, Italy, was once the home to over 1,800 people, all of whom who were permanently relocated by the government in 1963. Since then, the area has been abandoned due to the serious volcanic activity.
09. Fordlandia, Brazil
Fordlandia, Brazil, was known as Henry Ford’s village and now his wasteland. The area, which has abandoned for decades, draws in cults, eccentric groups, and business moguls alike.
08. Hashima Island, Japan
Hashima Island, Japan, was once a coal mining operation that brought in quite the resources for the country. After the coal was supplanted by oil in the nation, however, everyone was out of a job and forced to abandon their homes.
07. Dallol, Ethiopia
Dallol, Ethiopia, is now an abandoned mining camp within the heart of Afar Triangle. The Danakil Depression is located here, which is the lowest and hottest place on the entire planet. Due to the volcanic activity and unrest, the people were forced to remove themselves from The Gate to Hell.
06. Agdam, Azerbaijan
Agdam, Azerbaijan, is a casualty of wartime. The civil war between Azerbaijan and Armenia caused the entire city to become abandoned seemingly overnight. 40,000 people were forced to flee from the area.
05. Centralia, Pennsylvania
Centralia, Pennsylvania, is the town that gave inspiration to the Silent Hill franchise. A vein of coal under the town has been burning for decades now, causing everyone to escape the harmful gases and fires.
04. kolmanskop, Namibia
Kolmanskuppe, Namibia, is one of the most photographed abandoned towns in the entire world. The buildings are half-covered in sand, taken back by nature.
03. Pompeii, Italy
Pompeii, Italy, was obviously abandoned went Mount Vesuvius erupted, killing thousands. Many escaped, but it remains a ghost town to this day!
02. Oradour-sur-Glane, France
During the Second World War, Nazi Germany occupied huge parts of France. On June 10, 1944, the 2nd Panzer Division of the Waffen-SS massacred the entire village in retaliation for the killing of an officer by the local resistance movement. In total, 642 were killed.
01. Pripyat, Ukraine
Pripyat, Ukraine, is one of the most well-known ghost towns in the entire world. Following the Chernobyl disaster, everyone evacuated the area. No one has ever returned. The entire area is simply frozen in time.
