North Macedonia by Bus and Taxi - We spend a day at Lake Ohrid and 2 days at a Winery outside Bitola

In this video we are in North Macedonia in October, 2022. We are Duke and Marion, Boomers Without Borders. We travelled across North Macedonia by bus and taxi on our way from Albania to Greece.

From Tirana Albania we took a bus to Lake Ohrid. We stayed in a hotel overlooking the lake and watched the sunset at the Church of St John of Kaneo. From Lake Ohrid we took a shared taxi to Bitola where we spent two nights at the wonderful Ciflik Winery where we did some hiking and a lot of relaxing.

СВЕТИ НАУМ - Монастырь Святого Наума расположен на юго-восточном берегу Охридского озера.
Монастырь был основан в 893—900 годах святым Наумом Охридским, младшим учеником Кирилла и Мефодия, при содействии болгарских правителей Бориса и Симеона. После смерти святого 23 декабря 910 года его мощи были перемещены в монастырский храм.
О́ХРИД — город на восточном берегу Охридского озера.
Современный город Охрид построен на месте античной колонии Лихнид, известной ещё со II—III веков до н. э. В 148 году до н. э. колония была захвачена римлянами. В период римского и византийского владычества город являлся важным торговым пунктом на построенной римлянами дороге от побережья Адриатического моря к Константинополю. К концу V — началу VI веков город постепенно заселяется славянскими народами. В 861 году входит в состав Болгарии и получает современное название (под названием Охрид впервые упоминается в 879 году). В Охриде с 886 года ведёт просветительскую деятельность ученик Кирилла и Мефодия Климент Охридский.
С 990 до 1015 годы Охрид был столицей Болгарского царства царя Самуила. Над городом до сих пор остаются руины его крепости. После завоевания Охрида Византией в 1018 году, в Охриде было построено большое число православных христианских храмов. В 1394 году город оккупирует Османская империя, под властью которой он остаётся до 1912 года.
В 1979/1980 годах Охрид и Охридское озеро были включены в список объектов всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО.

SVETI NAUM - St. Naum Monastery is located on the southeastern shore of Lake Ohrid.
The monastery was founded in 893-900 by Saint Naum of Ohrid, a younger disciple of Cyril and Methodius, with the assistance of the Bulgarian rulers Boris and Simeon. After the death of the saint on December 23, 910, his relics were transferred to the monastery church.
OHRID is a city on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid.
The modern city of Ohrid was built on the site of the ancient colony Lihnid, known since the 2nd-3rd centuries BC. e. In 148 BC. e. The colony was taken over by the Romans. In 1979/1980, Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Our planned day in North Macedonia turned into two days because Laurenz had a surprise for me on the next day. After a nice Sunday brunch on a Friday we drove to the Bay of Bones. This is an archeological site of prehistoric pile dwellings in Ohrid lake and it dates back to 1200 BC. A really unique site here in North Macedonia.

About Macedonia: North Macedonia (Macedonia before February 2019), officially the Republic of North Macedonia, is a country in Southeast Europe. It gained independence in 1991 as one of the successor states of Yugoslavia. It is a landlocked country bordering Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west. It constitutes approximately the northern third of the larger geographical region of Macedonia. Skopje, the capital and largest city, is home to a quarter of the countrys 1.83 million population. The majority of the residents are ethnic Macedonians, a South Slavic people. Albanians form a significant minority at around 25%, followed by Turks, Romani, Serbs, Bosniaks, Aromanians and a few other minorities. The regions history begins with the kingdom of Paeonia, a mixed Thraco-Illyrian polity. In the late sixth century BC, the area was subjugated by the Persian Achaemenid Empire, then incorporated into the Kingdom of Macedonia in the fourth century BC. The Roman Empire conquered the region in the second century BC and made it part of the larger province of Macedonia. The area remained part of the Byzantine Empire, but was often raided and settled by Slavic tribes beginning in the sixth century of the Christian era. Following centuries of contention between the Bulgarian, Byzantine, and Serbian Empires, it was part of the Ottoman Empire from the mid-14th until the early 20th century, when, following the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913, the modern territory of North Macedonia came under Serbian rule.
