The world is finally waking up to the charms of this little nation wedged between Romania and Ukraine. Moldova was famously dubbed the world's least happy place in a bestselling book in 2008, but today it's better known for its unspoiled countryside and superb wine tours. As one of Europe’s least visited countries, Moldova retains a measure of roads-less-travelled charm. But that’s changing quickly as budget flights from Western Europe take off.
Pretty much all roads in Moldova lead to its wine-and-food loving capital. While the city’s origins date back six centuries to 1420, much of Chişinău was levelled in WWII and a tragic earthquake that struck in 1940. The Soviets rebuilt it into what you see today: grandiose Stalinist architecture mixed with gloriously brutal modernism from the later Soviet period and a smattering of pre-WWII edifices.
Chişinău is a city of parks where retirees play chess in the shade of old-growth trees, of street festivals, and of sidewalk cafes where you can have a beverage and watch the world go by. A dozen superb wineries are within a 90-minute drive of Chişinău, and the super-central location puts the entire country within a day trip. Throw in a hip and happening nightlife, and Chisinau ticks off all the boxes for an effective weekend break.

1. Situată în cursul inferior al Nistrului, în preajma satului Talmaza, raionul Ştefan Vodă;

Stephen III of Moldavia or Stephen III (c. 1432 July 2, 1504), also known as Stephen the Great or Stephen the Great and Holy (Romanian: Ştefan cel Mare; Ştefan cel Mare şi Sfânt), was Prince of Moldavia between 1457 and 1504 and the most prominent representative of the House of Muşat.
During his reign, he strengthened Moldavia and maintained its independence against the ambitions of Hungary, Poland, and the Ottoman Empire, which all sought to subdue the land.
To Cotnari, Stephen left a church built in 1493.
At Cotnari, in the Middle Ages, did a strong Catholic community of Germans and Hungarians inhabit the town.
In the medieval times, knowledge of general culture are acquired mostly by private study under the guidance of teachers, but also in the royal schools, monasteries or town.
1563 - Despot Voda, Prince of Moldavia, established in Cotnari , a College (Schola Latina), with a program designed to 5 years. Here has been studied mainly Latin, rhetoric and dialectic.
Despot Voda Eraclid or James or John II (1511-1563) was Prince of Moldavia between 18 November 1561 - November 5, 1563. Greek origin, was born in 1511.
School was led by humanist Sommer Iohann formed at the University of Frankfurt / Oder and that of Wittemberg.
Despot Voda raised a Catholic Church, now a ruin, which impresses by its size.

Monumentul “Lumânarea Recunoştinţei” din Soroca #travel #moldova #europe
Nu știu cum alții, dar eu mă mîndresc cu Republica Moldova. Și cu cît mai bine îmi cunosc meleagurile natale, cu atît mai mult îmi place de țara mea! La finele verii acestui an am avut ocazia să descoper nordul țării. La început, prin cel mai nordic punct pe care l-am vizitat, raionul Briceni, oraşele Ocniţa, Otaci, Mănăstirile Călărăşeuca şi Rudi.
Din start am hotărît să vizitez cetatea Soroca dar și monumentul “Lumînarea Recunoștinței” ridicat pe o stîncă deasupra Nistrului. Ideea de inaugurare a acestui monument îi aparține renumitului clasic al literaturii moldovenești, Ion Druță. Însă proiectul în cauză a fost realizat abia la 27 martie 2004.
Scara spre „Lumînarea Recunoștinței” a fost probabil a II-a cea mai lungă scară (după Cetatea Poenari) pe care am urcat-o vreodată, cu circa 656 de trepte. Ajuns lîngă capela în formă de lumânare de 29,5 m, am tras răsuflarea și mi-am zis că a meritat efortul, fiindcă de sus se deschide o priveliște de neuitat. Se vede bătrînul Nistru, Ucraina dincolo de el și dealurile păduroase din împrejurimi. În incinta „Lumânării” se află o bisericuță. De pe platforma de vizualizare se deschide panorama Sorocii de unde se vede și cetatea. Soroca merită vizitată. Mi-a plăcut că are parcuri și se află la poalele unor dealuri verzi, pitorești. Țin minte și acum cum una din străzi era plină de frunze uscate de castan... Aveai impresia că la final de august erai în plină toamnă. O senzație neobișnuită și plăcută. Așa am cunoscut Soroca.

TIPOVA Monastery/Mănăstirea ȚIPOVA/ Монастырь в скалах Ципова(WHAT TO VISIT IN MOLDOVA #1)
The monastery is comprised of three monastic complexes. The first complex consists of a church named for the feast of the Holy Cross and some cells. It is far from the other two and hardly accessible. The foundation of the complex dates from XI – XV centuries. In the second monastic complex is the church of St. Nicholas. It was carved in rock the in XIV – XV centuries. The third complex dates from the XVI – XVIII centuries and encompasses 18 separate rooms joined via an interior passage.
In 1776, the hermitage and its cells were renovated by the monk Vortolomeu, the founder of Saharna Monastery. In 1842, the hermitage was destroyed. The monastery land was given to the Capriana Monastery and the hermitage to the Saharna Monastery, which managed it from 1842 till 1919. In 1912 the church situated on the hill was restored by the monk Inokentie. In 1919, under the leadership of Archimandrite Mitrophor Sofronie Neaga, of Saharna Monastery, the Tipova hermitage obtained independence.
But in 1949, the complex was closed and dispossessed of its lands. The monks took refuge at other monasteries. The complex on the hill was taken over by local agricultural concerns. The church became a tobacco warehouse. The hermitage was cleared out and demolished.
In 1990, a group of archeologists from Saint Petersburg found a skeleton in the monastery basement, dating from the end of the XV century.
In 1994, Tipova Monastery was renovated. Only the exterior side of the Holy Virgin Assumption temple was restored. The church is medium size, with a rectangular shape and a belfry located above entrance. There is a fresco on the walls with floral decorations.
According to an old legend, the great lord Stefan cel Mare married one of his wives in the Tipova monastery. She is also buried there. Another legand says that the Greek mythological poet Orpheus died at Tipova Monastery. He was buried in the cascade valley. It is easy to recognize his grave, as there are six aperture slabs on it.
Besides the cave monastery, the area also has beautiful nature. The hills around the monastery are covered with forests where you find many narrow paths. It is also near the Nistru River and a small tributary, Tipova, which forms some waterfalls.
Mănăstirea Țipova este o mănăstire rupestră de călugări din Republica Moldova. Este situată pe malul drept al râului Nistru în apropiere de satul Țipova din raionul Rezina. Biserica datează din secolele XVI-XVII. Mănăstirea este de rit ortodox și adăpostea 9 viețuitori în anul 2012. Ea se găsește la o distanță de aproximativ 40,50 km de capitala țării, Chișinău, și este amplasată pe un mal abrupt la o înălțime de 100 de metri față de nivelul apei râului Nistru.
Complexul mănăstiresc se întinde pe trei nivele numărând mai multe încăperi și trei biserici (Sfânta Cruce - secolele XI-XII; Sfântul Nicolae - secolul XIV și Adormirea Maicii Domnului - secolele XVI-XVIII). Clopotnița, chiliile și celelalte încăperi sunt mai noi datând din secolul al XIX-lea. Cele peste 20 de încăperi comunică între ele prin tuneluri, galerii și scări, încăperea cea mai mare fiind biserica Adormirii Maicii Domnului.
Complexul mănăstiresc este săpat în calcar şi nimic altceva.
