5 places to discover in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The picturesque land of Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the heart of Southeastern Europe and this is an excellent starting point for exploration of the whole region.
Filled with green landscapes, high mountains and historical sites, these are just some of the things which this country has to offer.
Tour Guide Mostar counts down five places you must discover in Bosnia and Herzegovina…
1. Sarajevo
Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a compact city on the Miljacka River, surrounded by the Dinaric Alps. Its center has museums commemorating local history, including Sarajevo 1878–1918, which covers the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, an event that sparked World War I. Landmarks of the old quarter, Baščaršija, include the Ottoman-era Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque.

2. Mostar
Mostar is a city in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, straddling the Neretva River. It’s known for the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge), a reconstructed medieval arched bridge. The nearby alleys are full of shops and market stalls, and the Old Bridge Museum explores the bridge’s long history. A narrow staircase leads up to the Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque’s minaret for panoramic city views.

3. Blagaj
One of the magical places that take us back to the past is Blagaj, situated only 12 km away from Mostar.
The small and magical village of Blagaj is located on the river Buna. The Buna spring is one of the largest and most beautiful springs in Europe and probably the best example of underground karst river.
The beautiful scenery and rich history had been home of dervish house which is one of the most important monuments from the period of early Ottoman culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Dervishes are known for their special rituals performed and are still performed – zikir (praise to God). The Turkish sultan was delighted with Buna and so he ordered to build Tekke, the monastery of dervishes.

4. Počitelj
The historic town of Počitelj which is located on the left bank of the river Neretva, on the main Mostar to Metković road, to the south of Mostar, in the territory of Čapljina Municipality.
Back in the the middle ages, Počitelj was centre of governance and its westernmost point, which gave it major strategic importance. It is supposed that the fortified town and its attendant settlements were built by Bosnia’s King Stjepan Tvrtko I in 1383.
The walled town of Počitelj evolved over the period from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Architecturally, the surviving stone-built parts of the town are a fortified complex, in which two stages of evolution may be observed: mediaeval, and Ottoman.

5. Međugorje
Međugorje is a town located in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, around 25 km (16 mi) southwest of Mostar and close to the border of Croatia. The town is part of the municipality of Čitluk. Since 1981, it has become a popular site of Catholic pilgrimage due to reports of alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six local children.

24 Hours in Mostar | Most popular city in Bosnia & Herzegovina

We continued our time in Bosnia and Herzegovina and made our way to the popular city of Mostar. We started the morning at Stari Most, a very iconic and symbolic bridge that connects the two sides of town across the Neretva River. The bridge is around 75 meters high and locals actually jump off of it each day for tips. We happened to arrive at the bridge when a German tourist was jumping off... 3 TIMES!

Next up we headed to Alma Cafe where we sat down with Yas, the owner of the cafe. We had traditional Bosnia coffee and he explained the entire process from roasting the coffee to serving it and even how to properly drink it. We ended up spending 2 hours with Yas, chatting and enjoying what he had explained as a ritual behind drinking Bosnia coffee. We then made a quick stop for lunch and tried some traditional pies before continuing to check out more of the popular sites around the Old Town!

POCITELJ ???????? Drone Aerial 4K | Mostar Čapljina Bosnia & Herzegovina Босна

Počitelj (2024 Čapljina) is a historic and fortified settlement in Bosnia and Herzegovina located at the river Neretva close to Mostar and Metković. It is believed that the fortified town was founded in 1383 by Bosnian king Tvrtko I. In 1463-1471 the town was further fortified by Vladislav Hercegović with the support of Hungary and the Pope to withstand the Ottoman conquests and attacks in the Balkan Region. The Ottoman Turks eventually captured Počitelj in 1471 and remained until 1878 when it became briefly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Počitelj was severely damaged during the Yugoslavian civil war (1992-1995) when ethnic cleansing took place. Some highlights of Počitelj are the old town, the Počitelj Fortress, the mosque, the bastions and the Neretva River with the new Počitelj Bridge.

The walled town of Počitelj evolved over the period from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Architecturally, the surviving stone-built parts of the town are a fortified complex, in which two stages of evolution may be observed: mediaeval, and Ottoman.
In 1996, Počitelj was named by World Monuments Watch as one of the world's 100 most endangered cultural heritage sites. Since 2000, the town is in the program of protection of cultural heritage from further deterioration, rehabilitation of damaged and destroyed buildings, returns of the refugees and displaced persons to their homes and the sustainable and long-term protection and revitalization of the Historic urban area of Počitelj.
So what is so special about Počitelj? It`s the outstanding and picturesque architecture, which can be seen on the fort, mosque, medresa and hammam.
The original mediaeval nucleus of the Počitelj fort is the oldest walled section, where two stages of construction can be identified: the older, inner town or fortress (a donjon tower with a small ward or bailey) from the late fourteenth century, with later additions, alterations and reinforcements dating from the second half of the fifteenth century. Later on thefortress was considerably enlarged and fortified with a stronger system of defense. The town was walled so as to form an inner bailey from the square tower, two bastions (Mehmed-paša's and Delibaša's), Dizdar's house, a granary, the fort's mosque and a water-tower - a cistern with an entrance and steps leading to the water, two large gateways and two small ones.
The mosque of Hadži Alija is one of the finest achievements and monuments of the classical Ottoman style of single-room domed mosques in BiH. According to its chronogram, it was built in 970 AH (1562-63 AD) by Hadži Alija. The mosque occupies a prominent position in the urban fabric of the town and its natural surroundings. Other public buildings located by the mosque are the mektebs, the imaret, the medresa, the hamam, the han and the clock-tower.
The medresa of Šišman Ibrahim-Paša belongs to the standard type of smaller religious school, with five classrooms and a lecture room ranged along the two sides of an inner courtyard. The classrooms are roofed with five small domes and the lecture room with one large one.
The Sahat Kula (clock tower) was built under the influence of Mediterranean-Dalmatian architecture. It is stone-built, with dressed quoins and ending in a stone pyramid. There are four pointed arches on the four sizes above the opening near the top of the tower. This type of sahat-kula is to be found in Počitelj, Mostar, and Stolac.
