The present Tenkasi district was a part of erstwhile Tirunelveli district. Tenkasi district was formed in 2019.
Tenkasi shares its boundaries with Virudhunagar in the North, Thoothukudi in the East, Tirunelveli in the South and Kerala in the West. The district is nourished by two major rivers namely Chittar and Anumanadhi, because of which agriculture flourishes in this area. More than 65% of the population is engaged in agriculture and related activities. Water sources such as Gundar, Adavinayinar, Karupanadhi and Ramanadhi dam along with more than 800 tanks succour irrigation.
The waterfalls formed by the rivers attract a lot of tourists to the district. The famous Coutrallam falls situated in the river Chittar is well known across the state. The water from this falls is believed to have medicinal properties, because of which the falls is considered as a “medical spa”. Among 8 other falls in the district, Peraruvi, Aindharuvi and Puli aruvi are prominent ones.
Tenkasi is known for some of the significant spiritual places in South Tamilnadu. The Kutraleeshwarar temple (Chitra Sabha) is located in Tenkasi. It is one of the five sabhas of Nataraja, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Tamil poet Thirikooda Rasappa Kavirayar describes the imposing beauty of this place in his poem “Kutrala Kuravanji”. The Kasi Viswanathar temple, Sankarankoil temple, Pottalpudur darga, Ilangi Kumarar temple are the spiritual places located here.

Courtallam A Land of waterfalls. Courtallam is also called as ‘The Spa of South India’ and is a land of waterfalls! Courtallam - A Spa of South India and a land of waterfalls!
Courtallam, a town situated in the Tirunelveli District, is also called as the 'Spa of South India'. Situated along the Western Ghats, it is nestled between scenic mountains and agricultural lands. The place leaves an everlasting impression on the minds of the visitors.
Three of the main waterfalls - the New and Old Courtallam Falls and the Five Falls - are reachable by road. The other lesser known falls - Shenbagadevi Falls and the Thenaruvi - can be reached by trekking.
The New Courtallam falls, also known as the 'Peraruvi' in the local language, cascades from a height of about 60m. The rapid water flow has formed a crater where tourists and pilgrims can bathe. The waterfall is known to possess Ayurvedic healing properties as its feeding streams and rivers pass through grooves of medicinal herbs.
The Old Courtallam falls offer a much quieter experience when compared to the New Courtallam falls as it attracts a lesser number of people. This lets people to take time to enjoy the scenery and rejoice.
The Five falls is one of the nine falls in the Courtallam town.
The falls gets its name from the fact that the water flows down in 5 roughly parallel segments. It is also compared to the 5 headed cobra which is mentioned in Hindu mythology. One can also visit the Ayyappa and Vinayaka temple which is located near the falls.

The Main falls or Peraruvi is the most popular and the biggest among the nine falls, at a distance of about 300 meters from Courtallam Bus Stand. Falling from a height of 60 m, it is located right inside Courtallam town.
The flow of water is interrupted by the Pongumakadal rock and comes down gently making it a safe place to bathe. The waters of Courtallam are believed to have medicinal qualities as it flows through forests of herbs. The Kutralanathar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva is located near this falls.
There are nine waterfalls at Courtallam where the River Chittar cascades over 92 meters at varying volumes.
Chitraruvi or Small falls is situated just above the Main falls, and is one of the famous Tenkasi tourist places. There are steps that provide easy access to the small falls. The size of the falls is comparatively small and the people who are scared of Peraruvi can literally enjoy Chitraruvi. Separate sections are present both for men and women to take bath. Chitraruvi leads to other waterfalls like Shenbagadevi falls and Thenaruvi.
Shenbagadevi Falls or Chembakkadevi Falls is situated above Chitraruvi falls / Small falls, at about 3 km from Main falls. Visitors have to trek through Chitraruvi forest for about 45-60 minutes to reach Shenbagadevi falls, where the water flows from a height of 40 feet. The waterfall is surrounded by Shenbaga trees. Entry to this waterfall is restricted during peak season due to flash floods and not safe for bathing. There is also a temple dedicated to Shenbagadevi Amman near the falls. During full moon days, numerous pilgrims visit this temple. Vendors sell the fragrant Shenbaga flowers on the way to the temple, which is an offering here.
Honey Falls or Thenaruvi is further 1 km from Shenbagadevi Falls and 4 km from the Main falls. It cascades down from a height of 40 m between two large stones. This is the first cascade in the series of Courtallam Falls and is considered the purest. It is named after the beehives that form on the face of the rock during the dry season. The picturesque horseshoe-shaped waterfall which falls vertically from three sides to join into a small lake is a wonderful sight. The waterfall is not easily accessible and is a risky trek. The trek will take almost 30 minutes from Main falls and people are not allowed to bathe in the falls as it is very dangerous. Entry to this waterfall is also restricted during peak season owing to flash floods.

Courtallam is situated at the Western Ghats in Tenkasi District. The famous waterfalls on rocks and tiny droplets are sprinkled in the air. The water falls of Courtallam have medicinal value as they run through forest and herbs before their decent. The Courtallam is called as ‘Spa’ of South India.
There are Seven different falls of Courtallam Details given below:

Tiger Falls (Puliyaruvi)
Old Courtallam Falls (Palaiya Courtallam)
SenbahaDevi Falls (Senbakadavi)
Honey Falls (Theanaruvi)
Peraruvi (main falls) the biggest falls in Courtallam, is about 60m high. The flow of water is interrupted by the Pongumakadal, a 19m deep crater and comes down with greatly reduced impact, making a bath safe. In Chitraruvi (small falls), the flow is thin. Here naturally separate places for men and women are there to bathe. At Shenbagadevi falls, the water flows through shenbaga (Michaelia champak) trees. There is also a temple there, dedicated to Shenbagadevi Amman. Shenbagadevi leads to Chitraruvi. About 3 km from this is Thenaruvi (honey falls), 40m high and cascading between two large stones. In places where there is no water, one sees big honeycombs. Thenaruvi is very dangerous and it is restricted for public. But it is very common to see people visiting and bathing in Thenaruvi. Aintharuvi (five falls) has five separate cascades of water form this waterfalls. From the orchard above flows Pazhathotta Aruvi, the ‘VIP falls’. Only VIP’s are allowed in Pazhathotta Aruvi.

We travelled from Tiruvalla to Tenkasi on a pilgrimage trip to Tenkasi Viswanathar Temple . Tenkasi is the Thekkan Kasi or Southern Kasi. It is believed that darsan of Tenkasi Viswanathar Temple is equivalent to visiting Kasi ( Varanasi) Temple. Papanasam also spelt as Pavanasam is a famous picnic spot in Tirunelveli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It falls under the Ambasamudram Taluk. It is situated 60 kilometres (37 mi) from Tirunelveli. The site features tourist attractions like Thamirabarani River, Agasthiyar Falls, Siva Temple, and Papanasam dam and hydroelectric power plant.

Courtallam (Kutralam) Main Waterfalls is in Courtallam (Kutralam) in Tirunelveli district, South Tamil Nadu. It has medicinal qualities, popularly called as the Spa of the South. I visited the falls many times with family earlier and taken bath.
Kutralam waterfalls is located at an elevation of about 550 feet in the Western Ghats attracting tourists from all over. The water here passes over a lot of medicinal herbs, and therefore has the capacity to cure a number of ailments. There is also a belief that mentally ill gets cured after bathing at the falls.
The force of the water on top of our body while we take bath makes us feel free of all tensions and worries, and completely relaxes us.
Best season to visit Courtallam is from June to September. There are other waterfalls like Five falls, Puli Aruvi (Falls) etc.
Courtallam is 5 km from Sengottai, 6 km from Tenkasi, 40 km from Tirunelveli, 137 km from Kanniyakumari, 152 km from Alleppey, 112 km from Thiruvananthapuram and 640 km from Chennai. and 100 km from kollam
