This time we explore the streets of Barra Beach, Ílhavo in the early summer of 2021.
This oceanfront village is very charming, on a long peninsula with the lagoon on one side and the Atlantic on the other.
Located by the pontoon that marks the beginning of the Port of Aveiro and the end of the estuary, Barra Beach is both spacious and has good conditions for a range of sports including surfing, bodyboarding, kite-surfing, sailing and sea fishing. Very popular among sunbathers, the area takes on a new life during the summer months with the entertainment continuing well into the night at the many bars and discos and during local festivals.
Right by the beach is the imposing Aveiro Lighthouse, built over a century ago and, at 62 metres in height is the tallest in Portugal and second highest in Europe (in shore).

2 EURO Day Trip From Porto To Aveiro: Venice of Portugal - Triple P
Have you heard of the amazing 2 Euro day trip deal from Porto to Aveiro, the Venice of Portugal?
Hey everybody and welcome back to another episode of Triple P with me Surya Sridhar and my dad. So guys I am right now in the beautiful Sao Bento Station and we’re going to be taking a day trip to Aveiro, which is the Venice of Portugal. And the best part of this whole thing is that it only costed us 2 Euros to go and come back per person. That is an amazing deal. It’s only there on Sundays, so I highly recommend the next time when you guys come to Porto and you want to take a day trip, go for this deal. It’s absolutely fantastic! So let’s go and get started!

So as we had another hour left before the train’s departure, we decided to quickly grab ourselves a Portuguese Pingo. It means “a drop”, and refers to the drop of milk put into the espresso. A much loved drink in Portugal.
The train journey in itself was around 1 hour 15 minutes long, but time really flew by as we ended up chatting with a really sweet couple. They ended up inviting me to stay in their home in Malta to take videos of the place for my channel. What an exciting opportunity!
When we finally arrived and made our way to the river cruise, the first thing that struck me was the artsy vibe of the place. Wall paintings, colourful murals, abstract statues and beautiful azure tilings on buildings. But even more stunning were the boats cruising through the canals. We quickly got our tickets, 10 euros each, and got on with a group as well as our personal guide who seriously impressed me with her language skills. She spoke Portuguese, English, Spanish as well as French!
The tour was very informative. We firstly learnt about the famous “moliceiros boats” that were traditionally used to harvest seaweed to fertilise the soils. What makes them so special is not only the shape, but the beautiful depictions drawn on them. Every boat has its own unique painting on it, whether it be of a historical figure, a day to day activity or even a religious symbol. We also got a chance to explore the older and more modern sides of town, learnt about the salt mining process as well as the pivotal roles of fishermen.
After the tour, we decided to go buy an ice-cream and explore the city by foot. We passed by quaint coffee shops, beautiful churches, blue tiled houses, until we came upon an awesome market selling artistic paintings, local baked delights, extra virgin olive oil, hand-woven textiles, as well as wood carved furniture. It had everything!
Unfortunately we didn’t get the time to explore more, but incase you are there longer during your visit, don’t forget to stop by the colourful Costa Nova Beach, the historic Aveiro Museum, and the lush Parque do Infante. It is definitely worth it!

Aveiro is a city and a municipality in Portugal. In 2021, the population was 80,880,[1] in an area of 197.58 square kilometres (76.29 sq mi):[2] it is the second most populous city in the Centro Region of Portugal (after Coimbra). Along with the neighbouring city of Ílhavo, Aveiro is part of an urban agglomeration that includes 120,000 inhabitants, making it one of the most important populated regions by density in the North Region, and primary centre of the Intermunicipal Community of Aveiro and Baixo Vouga. Administratively, the president of the municipal government is José Ribau Esteves, elected by coalition between the Social Democratic Party and the Democratic Social Centre, who governs the ten civil parishes (Portuguese: freguesias).

Moliceiro is a boat that circulates in the Ria de Aveiro, lagoon region of the Rio Vouga. These vessels were originally used for catching seaweed, but are currently more used for tourist purposes.
It is one of the ex-libris of Aveiro, together with Ovos Moles and the University of Aveiro. Among the typical boats of the region, the moliceiro is considered the most elegant; despite the colorful and humorous decoration, it is a work boat for the collection of moliço, which was the main source of fertilizer in the agricultural lands of Aveiro.

Aveiro ([aˈvɐjɾu] (listen) is a city and a municipality in Portugal. In 2021, the population was 80,880, in an area of 197.58 square kilometres (76.29 sq mi): it is the second most populous city in the Centro Region of Portugal (after Coimbra). Along with the neighbouring city of Ílhavo, Aveiro is part of an urban agglomeration that includes 120,000 inhabitants, making it one of the most important populated regions by density in the North Region, and primary centre of the Intermunicipal Community of Aveiro and Baixo Vouga. Administratively, the president of the municipal government is José Ribau Esteves, elected by coalition between the Social Democratic Party and the Democratic Social Centre, who governs the ten civil parishes (Portuguese: freguesias).
The presence of human settlement in the territory of Aveiro extends to the period associated with the great dolmens of pre-history, which exist in most of the region. The Latinised toponym ‘'Averius'’ derived from the Celtic word aber (river-mouth, etym. Brythonic aber Proto-Celtic adberos, compare Welsh Aberystwyth).
For a long period Aveiro was an important economic link in the production of salt and commercial shipping. It was a centre of salt exploration by the Romans and trade centre through the Middle Ages, registered since 26 January 959 (from the testament of Countess Mumadona Dias to the cenóbio of Guimarães). During this testament, Mumadona Dias also highlighted the ancient name for Aveiro, this time referring to the monastery's lands in Alauario et Salinas, literally, a gathering place or preserve of birds and of great salt. From 11th century onwards, Aveiro became popular with Portuguese royalty.
