BERAT, ALBANIA | 6 INCREDIBLE Things To Do In & Around Berat

Berat is located 70 kilometers, or 43 miles, south of Tirana in the center of Albania. It’s known for its historic architecture combined with beautiful nature scenery. And it’s nicknamed the “town of a thousand windows” because of the Ottoman-era houses with large windows that overlook the town. So whether you’re a culture lover, history buff, or outdoor enthusiast, Berat offers something for everyone. This video highlights 6 amazing things to do in Berat, which are best undertaken in 2 to 3 days:

6. Explore the churches and remains of Berat Castle
Looming over the town, Berat Castle is an attraction you can’t miss! This fortress dates back to Roman Times, but the walls and towers that still stand today are mostly from the 1200s. Within its walls, you’ll find a vast citadel complex of stone streets, houses, and Byzantine churches mixed in with ruins from other time periods. Make sure to visit the subterranean water cistern and the 14th century Holy Trinity Church.

5. Take in the views from Berat Castle
Apart from the historical sights, the castle also offers the best panoramic views over Berat. Head to the lookout platforms to take in the river valley views. It’s a steep climb to reach Berat Castle from the lower town, but it’s absolutely worth it for the stunning views!

4. Explore the Mangalem and Gorica quarter
Below the castle sit two of the oldest and most picturesque neighborhoods in all of Berat. Mangalem and Gorica sit on either side of the Osumi River and are connected by the ancient Gorica Bridge. Both quarters are composed of narrow alleys of ancient white stone houses, timber doors, and large windows. After visiting these sections of town, you’ll understand where Berat’s nickname comes from!

☑️ Guided tour of Berat and the quarters:

3. Take a dip at the Bogove Waterfall
If you want to explore some of the natural beauty that surrounds Berat, the Bogove Waterfall is for you. It’s located 35 kilometers, or 21 miles, from town and it’s easiest to reach by car. The whole area is green and shady with deep swimming holes and cascading falls! It’s super refreshing to take a dip here during the heat of the summer, but be aware that the water is numbingly cold. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the falls.

2. Raft or hike at Osumi Canyon
Not far beyond the waterfalls, you can find the Osumi Canyon. The Osumi River passes through the town of Berat and flows through the canyon, with walls reaching over 80 meters, or 262ft, in some sections! Different seasons offer different types of activities here. During the spring you can see many waterfalls from the bottom, which can be explored by raft. While during the summer, the water is lower and there are more opportunities for river hiking and swimming in the streams.

☑️ Osumi Canyon + Bogove Waterfalls tour:

1. Go wine tasting at çobo winery
The countryside around Berat is known for its production of wine. You can admire the vineyards when driving around, but you can also do a tasting at some of them if you’d like. The çobo winery is probably the most famous wine producer in all of Albania.

Osumi Canyons - ???????? #Albania

The Osum Gorge is a river gorge in southern Albania, near the town of Çorovodë. The river Osum, which passes through the town of Berat, flows through the canyon.

The Osumi river gorge is one of the most spectacular natural attractions of Albania. During the spring, high water from melting snow makes it possible to explore the whole length of the gorge from the river. Spring is also the best time to view the many waterfalls in the gorges, which thunder from above as explorers pass below on boats. The rapids are Class II, so one does not need prior white water experience to navigate them. At the end of the summer, when the water is lower, the full length of the gorge is not navigable, but there are various walks with opportunities for swimming in various pools and streams.

The edges of the gorge have an unusual ecosystem that preserves the greenery on both sides of gorge year-round. Mediterranean bushes like heath and briar flourish along with a rich flora and fauna. On the slopes of the gorge, erosion has created pockmarked cavern walls with small caves. Some of the rock formations in the gorge have fanciful names such as the Cathedral, the Eye, and the Demon's Door.

The gorge is 26 km (16 miles) long, at an altitude of 450 m. They are thought to have been formed 2-3 million years ago by water erosion. There are many underground passages and unexplored caves throughout the length of the gorge. It is generally thought that many years ago the river flowed underground, but over time the rock above the river disappeared, creating the current form of the gorge. In the gulf of this gorge that is passed from Osum river in both its sides, outflow falls from different villages which pass in a rock chain. In the slopes of the gorge, erosion has created a rock chain, one of the rarest found in Albanian gorges.

The local inhabitants tell many interesting legends, such as those of Mulliri i Babait, Vrima e Nuses and Saint Abaz Ali.

The gorge includes six narrow sections ranging from 1.5 m wide in the riverbed up to 35 m wide further up the sides of the gorge.

#Voskopojë Korçë | Walking Tour - ???????? #Albania 2022 @MTravelVlog

Moscopole (Albanian: Voskopojë; Aromanian: Moscopole, Moscopoli, Muscopuli or Voscopole; Greek: Μοσχόπολη or Βοσκόπολη; Turkish: İskopol or Oskopol is a village in Korçë County in southeastern Albania. During the 18th century, it was the cultural and commercial center of the Aromanians. At its peak, in the mid 18th century, it hosted the first printing press in the Ottoman Balkans outside Istanbul, educational institutions and numerous churches and became a leading center of Greek culture.

Historians have attributed the decline of the city to a series of raids by Muslim Albanian bandits. Moscopole was initially attacked and almost destroyed by those groups in 1769 following the participation of the residents in the preparations for a Greek revolt supported by the Russian Empire. Its destruction culminated with the abandoning and destruction of 1788. Moscopole, once a prosperous city, was reduced to a small village by Ali Pasha of Ioannina. According to another opinion, the city's decline was mainly due to the relocation of the trade routes in central and eastern Europe following these raids. Today Moscopole, known as Voskopojë, is a small mountain village, and along with a few other local settlements is considered a holy place by local Orthodox Christians. It was one of the original homelands of much of the Aromanian diaspora. It is sometimes called as a Jerusalem of the Aromanians.

Osumi Canyons Albania

Albanian Adventure Resort is situated just 500 m away from the monument of nature, called the Colorado of Europe the Osumi Canyons.

Osumi Canyons are 26 km long, and 450m above the sea level. It is believed that they have
been formed 2-3 million years ago due to water erosion dipping in to the earth. Through all of their
straits, a lot of underground passages and unexplored caves can be found.
It is generally believed that these canyons have substituted ancient passages over Corrovoda's river, given that
through time the ceilings of these passages were destroyed and gave way to the various shapes of the nowadays canyons. Osumi Canyons are the largest in
Albania, and, according to many prestigious geographical studies, among the largest in Europe. The canyons have a marvelous ecosystem that can preserve itself very well. We can mention Mediterranean bushes like heath, briar and different kinds of fish as permanent features of this ecosystem.
In the slopes of the canyons, erosive activity has created a rock
chain, one of the rarest found in Albanian.
In Osumi Canyons are 6 straits with the canyons width ranging from 1.5m wide in its riverbed up to
35m wide up in the slopes. Within the canyons you will find beautiful spots that have exotic names like The Cathedral, The Eye, and Demon's Gate. The erosion through years has
given to the canyons, the appearance of an edifice of a natural cult, which can give you a magic
impression since the first glance.
The view they offer when you see the canyons from above is really breathtaking but the experience when
you're actually having a walk or rafting is even better.
