Modern Argos, Greece. Should you visit?

Argos is the oldest town in Greece, and Europe, continuously occupied for 7000 years. It is likely the oldest, or second oldest town in the entire world.

Is it worth a visit? It has amazing history and looking around at Larissa Castle, and the Roman ruins and town, you can see 3500 years of Greek History, from the Mycenaean acropolis on the hill, through the dominant city state of Argos, to the Roman occupation and the medieval Frankish castle to the modern town.

Located about 10km from Mycenae and 12 km from the town of Nafplio, it is easy to visit if you are in the area and is hugely under-rated and a town, and archaeological site. it should be on your Greek tour is you are visiting the area.

It is an easy day trip from Athens, taking about 90 minutes in car and combined with Nafplio and Mycenae I would highly recommend a stop if you are interested in seeing Greek history at it's best. It is after all the town of Greek Mythology, Hercules and King Pheidon, who famously beat the neighbouring Spartan City state in 650BC.

Ancient PELOPONNESE | Argos, Nafplio, Mycenae & Epidaurus | Greece Travel Vlog

In March 2022 we did a 8 days road-trip around the Peloponnese region in Greece. This peninsula may not be so famous like Athens or some of the Greek islands, but it's a really incredible destination too.

We have divided our trip in 4 episodes. In this first video, we will explore the charming city of Nafplio, the ancient ruins of Mycenae, the best preserved Greek theatre located in Epidaurus, and Argos, the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe.

Comment down below if you know other interesting places in Greece! We would love to explore more of this amazing country in the near future.

Top 10 Places to Visit in Greece - Travel Guide

For many years, Greece has been consistently ranked as one of the most popular destinations in Europe. It features a rich history, numerous islands, luxurious beaches, ancient orthodox sanctuaries, fascinating scenery, and delicious Mediterranean cuisine. At the same time, every part of the country has so many distinctive aspects that you can explore it for years. In this video, we compiled a short summary of the ten most interesting places in Greece which should be visited at least once in a lifetime.

Chapters:
0:00 - Intro

1:18 - 10. The Saronic Islands
The Saronic Islands are the closest to Athens, so it's easy to get here even if your stay is limited to the capital. The largest island in the archipelago is Salamin, but Aegina, Poros, and Hydra are real travel attractors.

2:30 - 9. Chalkidiki Peninsula
Chalkidiki Peninsula, shaped like a trident, is primarily known for its extremely clean sea and well-maintained beaches. No wonder why, even in Greece, famous for its coasts, Chalkidiki firmly holds the leadership in the number of blue flags for the cleanliness, environmental friendliness, and quality infrastructure of the beaches.

3:53 - 8. Rhodes
Rhodes is one of the most popular Greek islands, and it is not only because of its natural beauty and abundance of resorts and beaches. Settled in Neolithic times, Rhodes was one of the famous centers of an ancient civilization.

5:03 - 7. Mykonos
The island of Mykonos belongs to the Cyclades group and is considered one of the most bohemian islands in the Mediterranean and the Greek Ibiza.

6:16 - 6. Peloponnese
The opening of the Corinth Canal in 1893 added an extra attraction to the Peloponnese, but also separated it from the mainland and turned it into a full-fledged island.

7:24 - 5. Corfu
Corfu, or as the Greeks call it, Kerkyra, is a real gem in the Ionian Sea. First of all, Corfu captivates with its green and rich vegetation, which can't be compared to the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands.

08:45 - 4. Athens
Hardly a dozen cities in the world can boast such an ancient, deep, and distinctive history as Athens. As early as the 5th century B.C., thanks to its powerful navy and advanced political structure, Athens became the most important center of the entire Mediterranean.

09:54 - 3. Kalambaka
The small Greek town of Kalambaka would most likely remain off the main tourist routes if there were not Meteora, one of Greece's most important natural and religious sights.

10:58 - 2. Crete
The largest and most populous of the Greek islands, Crete is a real state within a state, with its own history, culture and traditions.

12:21 - 1. Santorini
Greek islands are amazing in their diversity, but still Santorini has a special place among their incredible abundance. This tiny volcanic island has long ceased to be just a resort, becoming a real hallmark of the whole country.

PERFECT GREECE ROAD TRIP: BEST THINGS TO DO IN THE PELOPONNESE - Monemvasia, Longos, Diakopto

Welcome to the Peloponnese! Head to to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using our code sammytommy!

In todays video we will be showing you the best things to do in the Peloponnese! We visit beautiful beach towns, take a train ride, and explore a hidden city with ancient ruins!

We first stopped at the quaint sea side town of Longos for some much needed rest and relaxation. From Longos we drove about 20 minutes to Diakopto to take a scenic train ride to the mountain village of Kalavryta. This scenic train takes you along a rack railway line, which is a system involving toothed rails and gears that allow trains to climb steep inclines. It is the narrowest railway line in Europe with a width of only 75cm. Once we arrived at Kalavryta we got a feel for the little town and visited the Holocaust Monument that sits on top of Kapi hill.

As we continue on our Greece road trip through the Peloponnese we decided to stop in Monemvasia. Monemvasia is one of the most popular spots in the Peloponnese and so many locals had recommended it to us, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to check it out!

Stay tuned for next week where we wrap up our Greece road trip through the Peloponnese.

Thanks so much for watching and if you enjoyed this video make sure to leave us a comment and SUBSCRIBE!

Incredible travel into the history of ancient Greece. Visit of Mycenae, Argos and Epidaurus. 4K

#greece #mycenae #tolo #epidaurus #argos #peloponnese

Discover our new adventure in #Greece and the #Balkans. Between history and gastronomy, this journey of several weeks will make you discover splendid places from the air. Please note that all the images, even those in #drone are shot in 4K.

Second step of our journey in Greece, a visit of the eastern Peloponnese. A busy day with the discovery of the ancient city of Mycenae and the Larissa castle in Argos in the morning. After a stop in Nafplio for lunch, we will drive to the archaeological site of Epidaurus and discover the ruins of the sunken city in the bay of Epidaurus.

0:37 Departure from Tolo
1:10 Visit to the ancient city of Mycenae
5:50 Stop at Larissa castle in Argos
7:12 Lunch break in Nafplio
9:15 Discovery of the site of Epidaurus
12:55 Dive to the sunken city
14:47 Return to Tolo and dinner at Maria's restaurant

First stop: Mycenae
Mycenae is an ancient pre-Hellenic city of the Bronze Age located on a hill between the mounts Profitis Ilias and Zara, northeast of the plain of Argos, in the Peloponnese, and surrounded by fortifications of cyclopean walls.During the 2nd millennium B.C., Mycenae became a major pole of continental Greece. Its apogee is located between the 14th and 13th centuries BC. The powerful city shows several signs of destruction, like the rest of the sites of the Mycenaean civilization. Their causes are still under discussion: foreign invasions, earthquakes, fires or internal conflicts. Mycenae became a minor city, its fortifications are destroyed after the sacking of the city by Argos in 468 BC. Mycenae, like its neighbor Tirynthe, is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1999.

Second stop: Argos
At the end of the Bronze Age, Argos was one of the centers and one of the best known strongholds of the Mycenaean civilization. After the dark centuries, it supplanted Mycenae. Under the reign of the tyrant Pheidon, in the 7th century BC, it subjected the other Peloponnesian cities. The battle of Mantinea, in 418 BC, finally convinced Argos to ally with Sparta, but not for long because it broke this treaty at the beginning of the Corinthian War, in 395 BC.

The city was subdued by the Romans in 146 BC along with the rest of the Achaean League, then included in the Roman province of Achaia in 27 BC.

Lunch in Nafplio :
After visits to Mycenae and Argos, head to Nafplio where we will have lunch. The seaside town of 14,000 inhabitants is a tourist mecca. It is dominated by the rock Palamède (Palamidi, 286 m), which dominates the plain of Argolide. The city has two fortresses.

During the Greek War of Independence, Nafplio was one of the objectives of the insurgent Greeks. It even became the capital of Greece until the fall of 1834. It is very pleasant to walk in the streets of the city, to have a coffee or to have a meal.

Visit of Epidaurus:
One of the most famous sites of ancient Greece, Epidaurus is best known for its marvelous theater, set in a harmonious setting of fragrant pines and hills. Dating from the 3rd century B.C., this one, renowned for its proverbial acoustics, had 14,000 seats. Epidaurus was also, and above all, a sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, god of medicine whose emblematic caduceus adorns the badge of modern pharmacists. The treatments, focused on the balance of body and soul, were based on the interpretation of dreams by the priests, the practice of sports (hence the presence of a stadium), entertainment (theater) and animal sacrifices. The museum of the site shelters among other things some antique surgical instruments.

Diving in the heart of the sunken city:
There is a free archaeological diving site on the southern beach of Paleá Epídavros. It is an ancient storehouse (140 BC). It is characterized by the presence of 18 doliums (fixed storage amphora), some of which are particularly well preserved

Return to Tolo :
Finally, we returned to Tolo at the end of the day, proud to have discovered the majority of the tourist sites of the sector. The bay of Tolo is really beautiful. We understand why many vacationers, including many French, come here every year. We walked to another excellent restaurant in Tolo, Maria's Restaurant. From Halloumi to salad to seafood, everything was delicious.

Beautiful Nafplio Greece. (With a little secret)

Part 1 of 2 videos, in this first tour of my local town, Nafplio, I look loosely at the history of Nafplio and the influence it has had on the present day town, which was the first Capital of Greece in 1828.

If you have a chance it is a must visit town, about 90 minutes drive along the beautiful coast from Athens and located about 15km from Argos at the edge of the Peloponnese.

A must visit from Athens, for a day trip or a longer stay, Ancient Greece

Peloponnese, Greece - 10 Day Road Trip 2022

After my relaxing time in Zakynthos, I hopped off the ferry at Kyllini and began my road trip around the Peloponnese region of Greece for 10 days. Here is what I did:

Day 1 - first stop, Olympia! I arrived around midday, checked into the hotel and then headed to the archeological site of Ancient Olympia. The ticket also included access to the archaeological museum and the museum of the history of the Olympic games of antiquity which I also enjoyed. There wasn't much else to see in Olympia besides stroll the main street which was full of touristy shops.

Day 2 - drive from OIympia to Methoni with a stop at Voidokilia beach. I enjoyed the small seaside town of Methoni with it's impressive castle and great sunset views where the Ionian and Mediterranean seas meet.

Day 3 - drive from Methoni to Kardamyli. I first took a detour to Ancient Messini on the way which was definitely worth seeing. I arrived in the lovely seaside town of Kardamyli in the afternoon and had a nice stroll around before relaxing at the beach.. until the rain started!

Day 4 - day spent in and around Kardamyli. I first did a hike up to Agia Sofia and then continued a little further into the mountains. I then checked out the Mourtzinos Tower area before heading to the beaches - Foneas and Delfinia.

Day 5 - Kardamyli to Mystras. I made two lovely stops on the Mani Peninsula along the way - Stoupa and Limeni. When I arrived in Mystras, I had lunch in the little town and then checked out Sparti at night.

Day 6 - Mystras to Nafplio. In the morning, I headed into the Archelogical site of Mystras and wondered around for about 2 hours, walking all the way up to the castle. I then started to make my way to Nafplio; I made a detour lunch stop to the small mountainous village of Levidi which is my grandfather's village. I arrived in Nafplio in the late afternoon and had a relaxing rest of the day.

Day 7 - day exploring Nafplio; walking around the old town, checking out the fortress and enjoying some relaxation at the beach.

Day 8 - trip to Epidavros in the morning before spending the rest of the day in Tolo.

Day 9 - Nafplio to Aigio. On the way, I first stopped at Mycenae before completing the journey to Aigio, the city of my grandmother. It was a nice place to stay off the beaten track with a buzzing waterfront and beach area!

Day 10 - final day; I spent the morning and early afternoon relaxing in Aigio before heading off on a 3 hour drive to Igoumenitsa for my next adventure!

MYCENAE, Day trip from Athens. Argos and Nafplio.

If you are interested in Greek History, then the suggested day trip from Athens to walk around Mykines, Argos and Nafplio in the Peloponnese is well worth considering.

You can experience 3500 years of Greek (Hellenic) history and development in one easy drive or tour from Athens

1st stop is the Bronze age site of the city state of The Mycenaean civilisation dating from about 1600bc, Mycenae, by Mykines about 90 minutes easy coastal drive from Athens in a hire car or organised tour.

Next about 20 mins from Mycenae is Argos, the oldest town in Europe, having been continuously occupied for 7000 years, and with its amazing old Roman Theatre, Roman Baths, and Roman Agora which are easily explored at the foot of Larissa Hill and date from about 500bc.

Finally we finish the day in the medieval fortress town of Nafplio, another lovely 20 minute drive from Argos. This is the perfect place to unwind and relax after the heat of the day, with shopping, bars restaurants, 3 fortresses and should you wish to stay the night rather than drive back to Athens, many hotels.

The drive back is easy however, taking about 90 minutes.

LARISSA CASTLE ???????? Άργος Argos Drone Aerial 4K | Κάστρο Λάρισα Αργολίδα Πελοπόννησος Greece

Since Mycenaean times the Aspis hill above the city of Argos on the Peloponnese in Greece has been settled. On the ancient structures the Byzantine Empire founded a castle which was attacked and conquered by the Crusaders in 1212. Under the leadership of Geoffrey of Villehardouin a restored castle appeared after it underwent repairs of its foundations. It's current shape was finished in the 14th century. In 1388 the castle was taken by the Republic of Venice and eventually it came into the hands of the Ottomans in 1463.

Nafplio, Greece

Nafplio (Greek: Ναύπλιο) is a town in the Peloponnese in Greece. The town was an important seaport held under a succession of royal houses in the Middle Ages as part of the lordship of Argos and Nauplia, held initially by the de la Roche following the Fourth Crusade before coming under the Republic of Venice and, lastly, the Ottoman Empire. The town was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic and of the Kingdom of Greece, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. Nafplio is now the capital of the regional unit of Argolis.
