BANGKOK Things to do - 3 BEST Highlights NOT to be missed!!

Have you checked out our latest vlog BANGLADESH FOOD ???????? - Best Street Food Biryani in OLD DHAKA ? এটা কি সেরা বিরিয়ানি
--~--
BANGKOK Things to do - There are so many things one can get upto in Bangkok but these attractions are just outside the main city.

Bangkok has a plethora of attractions, amazing foods, magical sites and busy markets however we decided to head outside Bangkok for a day to see the famous Floating Market followed by the Train Market at Maeklong and we ended our trip by visiting the Dragon Temple which is also locally known as Wat Sam Phran.

We booked a taxi from Bangkok that collected us from our hotel and spent the day with us. We would recommend starting early as all three attractions are spread out however these can easily be done in a day.

TOP 10 Things to Do in Bangkok - Bangkok Must-see Attractions

Bangkok began as a small trading centre and port community on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River some 200 years ago. Today, while the city is up to speed with modern times, the grandeur and glory of its illustrious past still prevails. Be it dazzling temples, spectacular palaces, a world-famous floating market or colourful Chinatown, each of these famous places has an intriguing story to tell.

1 - Grand Palace & Wat Prakeaw

The Grand Palace and Wat Prakaew command respect from all who have walked in their sacred grounds. Built in 1782, and for 150 years the home of Thai Kings and the Royal court, the Grand Palace continues to have visitors in awe with its beautiful architecture and intricate detail. Wat Pra Kaew enshrines Phra Kaew Morakot (the Emerald Buddha), the sacred Buddha image meticulously carved from a single block of emerald.

2 - Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn)

The impressive silhouette of Wat Arun’s towering spires is one of the most recognised in Southeast Asia. Constructed during the first half of the 19th century in the ancient Khmer style, the stupa showcasing ornate floral pattern decked out in glazed porcelain is stunning up close. Apart from its beauty, Wat Arun symbolises the birth of the Rattanakosin Period and the founding of the new capital after Ayutthaya fell.

3 - Floating Market

The pioneer of all floating markets, Damnoen Saduak continues to offer an authentic experience despite its increasingly touristy atmosphere. Imagine dozens of wooden row boats floating by, each laden to the brim with farm-fresh fruits, vegetables or flowers. Food vendors fill their vessels with cauldrons and charcoal grills, ready to whip up a bowl of ‘boat noodle’ or seafood skewers upon request.

4 - Chinatown (Yaowarat)

Chinatown is a colourful, exotic and pleasingly chaotic area, packed with market stalls and probably the highest concentration of gold shops in the city. During major festivities like Chinese New Year and the Vegetarian Festival, the dynamism and spirit of celebration spreads across town like wildfire, and if you happen to be around, don’t miss an opportunity to witness Bangkok Chinatown at its best.

5 - Wat Pho

There’s more to Wat Pho than the gigantic reclining Buddha and traditional Thai massage. Wat Pho harbours a fascinating collection of murals, inscriptions and sculptures that delve into various subjects, from warfare to astronomy to archaeology. The vast temple complex contains a landscaped garden with stone sculptures, stupas adorned with glazed porcelain, a souvenir shop and the College of Traditional Medicine.

6 - Chao Phraya River & Waterways

One of the most scenic areas, the riverside reflects a constantly changing scene day and night: water-taxis and heavily laden rice barges chugging upstream, set against a backdrop of glittering temples and luxury hotels. The areas from Wat Arun to Phra Sumeru Fortress are home to some of the oldest settlements in Bangkok, particularly Bangkok Noi and its charming ambience of stilt houses flanking the complex waterways.

7 - Chatuchak Weekend Market

Once only popular among wholesalers and traders, Chatuchak Weekend Market has reached a landmark status as a must-visit place for tourists. Its sheer size and diverse collections of merchandise will bring any seasoned shoppers to their knees. The market is home to more than 8,000 market stalls. On a typical weekend, more than 200,000 visitors come here to sift through the goods on offer.

8 - Khao San Road

If Bangkok is a city where East greets West, then Khao San Road is the scene of their collision, the place where they jostle for superiority and poke one another in the eye. With travellers from every corner of the modern world, sleek clubs playing sophisticated sounds, eclectic market stalls, converted VW cocktail bars, and foods tamed to suit the Western palate, it may seem clear who won the fight.

9 - Soi Cowboy

Soi Cowboy was named after the cowboy hat-wearing African-American who opened the first bar here in the early 1970s. This adult-themed district has a more laid-back, carnival-like feel to it than Patpong or Nana Plaza. Flashing neon lights up a colourful streetscape comprised mainly of middle-aged expats, Japanese and western tourists.

10 - Jim Thompson’s House

Jim Thompson’s three decades of dedication to the revival of Thai silk, then a dying art, changed the the industry forever. After he mysteriously disappeared into the jungles of Malaysia, he left a legacy behind, which is reflected through his vast collections of Thai art and antiques now on display at the Jim Thompson’s House and Museum, itself a lovely complex of six Thai-style teakwood houses preserved to their original glory.

Bangkok Travel Tips: 13 Things to Know Before You Go

Things YOU need to know before YOU go to Bangkok in Thailand.
Bangkok is the bustling capital of Thailand with a population of more than 11 million. About 13% of Thailand's population lives in Bangkok. Bangkok was the world’s top tourist destination with 20 Million Tourists in 2017. Bangkok is also known as the Big Mango.

2 - Weather

Hot and Humid! Really hot and humid! Like all the time!
Daytime highs all year are in excess of 30C/86F
Bangkok holds claim to being the hottest city in the world
Not because the highs are the highest, but because it doesn’t cool down at night
Lows range from 21C to 26C ( 70F-79F )

April to October is the wet & hot season

The “cool” and dry season is November to February, like a degree or 2 less on the highs and a few degrees cooler on the lows

3. Getting In

Chances are you’ll be flying in to Bangkok, yes there are buses, and yes there’s a train, and you can take it from Singapore, but most people fly.

2 Airports
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK).
Most international flights go in to BKK

By Rail:
The Airport Rail Link connects Suvarnabhumi Airport with the BTS Skytrain system, which is Bangkok’s primary public transportation system. The City Line connects with the BTS Skytrain at Phayathai Station and costs 45 baht from Suvarnabhumi.

By Taxi:
Metered taxis are available from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok.

4. Getting Around

MRT Subway
Fare varies according to age

People don’t stand in lines. Instead of queuing up, Thais form a crowd. Stand your ground, and get used to a lack of personal space in public places.

Taxis
Notorious for ripping off tourists. Make sure they turn on the meter. It should start at 35 THB. Or download the GrabTaxi app -- like Uber, but cheaper.

Tuk Tuk
A small vehicle with no windows or doors but with a roof and a seat.
Price is always negotiated
Make sure to hold on the handles, tuk tuk drivers can be crazy drivers

Motorbike Taxis
Best to get through traffic
And come with a free massive heart attack!

5. Money
Thai Baht

1 Thai Baht was about $.03 US
Or 33 Baht to 1 USD

In Thailand, there are 1 baht, 2 baht, 5 baht, and 10 baht coins and 20 baht, 50 baht, 100 baht, and 1,000 baht notes. You may also occasionally see a 10 baht note, although those are no longer printed.

Get it from an ATM, but select “Continue Without Conversion”

6. What to wear

Linen, Rayon, or wicking/quickdry fabrics

DON’T WEAR JEANS -- you’ll combust! Also don’t wear anything lined with Polyester -- it’s as good as wearing a ziplock bag.

Temples and Palaces require you to cover your shoulders and knees.
pay attention to see if others have taken off their shoes. If so, follow suit.

7. Language
Big cities like Chiang Mai and Bangkok have a lot of locals who speak English

Sawadiikaa for females, and Sawadiikrap for males - This is the Thai greeting for hello and goodbye, and is accompanied by the wai gesture.
placing hands palms together at your chest and bowing your head
Also note that adding kaa or krap to any sentence in Thai makes the sentence more polite.
Kapkhunkaa for females, and Kapkhunkrap for males - This means thank you, and it is also often accompanied by the wai gesture.
Chuai buht meter dai mai kaa/krap? - Could you turn on the meter?
Gepdthang noi - Check please.
Mai ao - This verbatim means I'm not getting that, but can generally be used to deny an interest in purchasing anything.
Krungthep - This is the word for Bangkok in Thai. Many people mistakenly assume Bangkok is a Thai word. It's not, and knowing the real word can come in handy.

8. Shopping

9. Food

10. Bug Spray

11. Respect the King and the Royal Family

12. Don’t touch anyone on the head.

ULTIMATE Bangkok Travel Guide 2023: Hidden Gems Beyond the Tourist Traps

The ultimate Bangkok travel guide for your next visit, including the best hidden gems beyond the tourist traps!

If you’re wandering what to do in Bangkok, don’t make the same mistakes that many tourists make. Many first time visitors head straight to the Koh San Road - a loud, dirty, backpacker street that doesn’t show the best of this city.

But when it comes to Bangkok things to do, it gets so much better!

On a first time in Bangkok Thailand it’s easy to miss the best spots if you stick to the standard tourist route - hitting the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Asiatique. These are amazing sights to see in Bangkok, but they are not the best!

Instead why not try cycling in Bangkok’s Green Lung in Bang Krachao, or visit the funniest temple with a statue of David Beckham? I will also show you the best train market, the best viewpoint and the best skybar that won’t break the bank.

Back in 2018, I made a video about Why I Love Bangkok, which still has some really good suggestions for a first time in Bangkok Thailand:

But this is a whole new and updated list: why I STILL love Bangkok in 2023!
