Le Marais(The Marais)

Le Marais (French pronunciation: [lə maʁɛ] (About this soundlisten); The Marsh) is a historic district in Paris, France. Long the aristocratic district of Paris, it hosts many outstanding buildings of historic and architectural importance. It spreads across parts of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements in Paris (on the Rive Droite, or Right Bank, of the Seine). Once shabby, the district has been rehabilitated and now sports trendy shopping and restaurants in streets such as Rue des Francs-Bourgeois and Rue des Rosiers.

In 1240, the Order of the Temple built its fortified church just outside the walls of Paris, in the northern part of the Marais. The Temple turned this district into an attractive area, which became known as the Temple Quarter, and many religious institutions were built nearby: the des Blancs-Manteaux, de Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie and des Carmes-Billettes convents, as well as the church of Sainte-Catherine-du-Val-des-Écoliers.

During the mid-13th century, Charles I of Anjou, King of Naples and Sicily, and brother of King Louis IX of France built his residence near the current n°7 rue de Sévigné. In 1361 the King Charles V built a mansion known as the Hôtel Saint-Pol in which the Royal Court settled during his reign as well as his son's.

From that time to the 17th century and especially after the Royal Square (Place Royale, current place des Vosges) was designed under King Henri IV of France in 1605, the Marais was the French nobility's favorite place of residence. French nobles built their urban mansions there—hôtels particuliers, in French—such as the Hôtel de Sens, the Hôtel de Sully, the Hôtel de Beauvais, the Hôtel Carnavalet, the Hôtel de Guénégaud and the Hôtel de Soubise, as well as many other hôtels particuliers, found all over the district.

During the late 18th century, the district was no longer the most fashionable district for the nobility, yet it still kept its reputation of being an aristocratic area. By that time, only minor nobles and a few more powerful nobles, such as the Prince de Soubise, lived there. The Place des Vosges remained a place for nobles to meet. The district fell into despair after the French Revolution, and was therefore abandoned by the nobility completely, and would remain so until the present day.

Paris 4K - Classic Paris Streets - Driving Downtown

How can you not love Paris!? Thursday afternoon drive around the district home to the President of France, a host of luxury fashion brands, the Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Place de la Concorde, as well as the Élysée Palace in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. Filmed on my last visit to Paris in November last year. I generally film more than I can upload. Video starts on Paris' Main Street, the Champs-Élysées, facing the Arc de Triomphe, and continues past the theatres, cafés, and luxury shops of the 8th arrondissement. Starting Point: .

The 8th arrondissement of Paris (VIIIe arrondissement) is one of the 20 arrondissements of the capital city of France. In spoken French, this arrondissement is colloquially referred to as huitième (eighth/the eighth).

The arrondissement, called Élysée, is situated on the right bank of the River Seine and centred on the Champs-Élysées. The 8th is, together with the 1st, 9th, 16th, and 17th arrondissements, one of Paris's main business districts. According to the 1999 census, it was the place of employment of more people than any other single arrondissement of the capital. It is also the location of many places of interest, among them the Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe (partial), and the Place de la Concorde, as well as the Élysée Palace, the official residence of the President of France. Most French fashion luxury brands have their main store in 8th arrondissement, Avenue Montaigne or Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, both in the Champs-Elysees Avenue shopping district.

Paris is the capital and most populous city of France, with a population of 2,140,526 residents (official estimate, 1 January 2019) in an area of 105 square kilometres (41 square miles). Since the 17th century, Paris has been one of Europe's major centres of finance, diplomacy, commerce, fashion, science, and the arts. The City of Paris is the centre and seat of government of the Île-de-France, or Paris Region, which has an estimated official 2019 population of 12,213,364, or about 18 percent of the population of France. The Paris Region had a GDP of €709 billion ($808 billion) in 2017. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit Worldwide Cost of Living Survey in 2018, Paris was the second most expensive city in the world, after Singapore, and ahead of Zürich, Hong Kong, Oslo and Geneva. Another source ranked Paris as most expensive, on a par with Singapore and Hong Kong, in 2018.

The city is a major railway, highway, and air-transport hub served by two international airports: Paris-Charles de Gaulle (the second busiest airport in Europe) and Paris-Orly. Opened in 1900, the city's subway system, the Paris Métro, serves 5.23 million passengers daily, and is the second busiest metro system in Europe after Moscow Metro. Gare du Nord is the 24th busiest railway station in the world, but the first located outside Japan, with 262 million passengers in 2015.

Paris is especially known for its museums and architectural landmarks: the Louvre was the most visited art museum in the world in 2018, with 10.2 million visitors. The Musée d'Orsay, Musée Marmottan Monet, and Musée de l'Orangerie are noted for their collections of French Impressionist art, the Pompidou Centre Musée National d'Art Moderne has the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe, and the Musée Rodin and Musée Picasso exhibit the works of the two noted Parisians. The historical district along the Seine in the city centre is classified as a UNESCO Heritage Site, and popular landmarks in the city centre include the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris and the Gothic royal chapel of Sainte-Chapelle, both on the Île de la Cité; the Eiffel Tower, constructed for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1889; the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, built for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1900; the Arc de Triomphe on the Champs-Élysées, and the Basilica of Sacré-Coeur on the hill of Montmartre.

Paris received 24.5 million visitors in 2018, measured by hotel stays, with the largest numbers of foreign visitors coming from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and China. It was ranked as the second most visited travel destination in the world in 2018, after Bangkok.

MARAIS :

A romantic, festive and trendy district, the charm of the Marais lies in its cobblestone streets, historic spots and quirky boutiques. Straddling the Paris Centre arrondissement, this district with a village feel was built on marshland (‘marais’ in French), hence its name. Parisians and visitors alike love to come here for a leisurely stroll, as it is a great place to spend time and/or go shopping. A closer look at this many-faceted must-see district.

HISTORIC DISTRICT IN PARIS :

Located in the heart of Paris, the Marais owes much of its charm to its magnificent architecture and rich history.Among the most beautiful mansions are the hôtels de Sully and de Soubise, not to mention the Hôtel Salé, a magnificent building once frequented by the writer Honoré de Balzac and now home to the famous Picasso museum.

A Paris landmark that one cannot possibly fail to notice is the Hôtel de Ville. This imposing building housing the Paris city council has a huge courtyard where many events are held all year round. A short distance from here is the romantic Place des Vosges dating to the Renaissance: Paris’s oldest square. This charming oasis of greenery is surrounded by red-brick buildings where such illustrious names as Victor Hugo, Madame de Sévigné and Colette once lived. Then there is the Baroque-style church Église Saint-Paul Saint-Louis du Marais with its beautiful pastel-coloured clock and a painting by Eugène Delacroix.

SHOPPING IN MARAIS :

The Marais is definitely one of the best places in Paris to go shopping! With its beautiful cupola and bird’s-eye view of the Hôtel de Ville, BHV MARAIS is a Paris retail icon. This department store built in 1856 in the heart of the Marais has all the top ready-to-wear brands under one roof. It also stocks a wide range of leisure and design items and has a variety of dining options.

The neighbouring streets are filled with shops of every description, notably Rue Vieille-du-Temple, Rue du Temple and Rue Charlot. Major brands have stores in the district, including Uniqlo, COS, The Kooples and Scotch & Soda. And the Marais is a paradise for vintage shopping – there are plenty of shops selling pre-loved clothing.

In recent times, luxury brands such as Karl Lagerfeld, Gucci and John Galliano have also opened boutiques in the district.

There is something to suit all budgets!

A DISTRICT FOR FOODIES :

Whatever you feel like eating and whatever the time of day, the Marais has something to suit your tastes.

Among the area’s restaurants for lunch or dinner are Glou, l'Art de la Truffe and Robert et Louise, all of which put a contemporary twist on traditional French cuisine. At Le Bel Canto, on the banks of the Seine, the staff not only serve fine French food, they also sing opera arias. The Marais has Michelin-starred restaurants such as L’Ambroisie on Place des Vosges as well as classic Parisian brasseries: Bofinger, Le petit Bofinger, Le Comptoir des Archives and Les Philosophes. If you just want a light snack or you’re short of time, there are plenty of street food stalls selling whatever takes your fancy: crêpes, noodles or bagels. The best falafel in Paris is also to be found in the Marais: head for one of the little shops on Rue des Rosiers, like L’As du Fallafel, to try these delicious chickpea patties topped with roasted aubergine, fresh veggies and homemade tahini sauce.

A Walk Up The Famed Market Street of Rue Cler, Paris

The 7th arrondissement is home to rue Cler, one of the best market streets in Paris. Find a wonderful selection of specialty food stores, pastry shops, butchers, delicatessens, cheese specialists, fishmongers, greengrocers, chocolate shops and cafés. Most of the street is a pedestrian area and still has its original cobblestones. This authentic market street is where the locals go to buy their favorite foods or sit on one of the many café terraces with friends and family and watch the world go by.

A Walk Down Rue-des-Rosiers, Le Marais, Paris

The Rue des Rosiers, which means street of the rosebushes, is a street in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, France. It begins at Rue Malher and proceeds northwest across Rue Pavée, Rue Ferdinand Duval, Rue des Écouffes, and Rue des Hospitalières Saint-Gervais before it ends at Rue Vieille du Temple.

Rue des Rosiers lies at the center of the Jewish quarter unofficially called the Pletzl (Yiddish for little place). Shopping hours are restricted in Paris, but an exception was granted to this area due to Saturday being the Jewish Sabbath. As a result, cafes and shops are open in this area on Sundays and holidays, which draws large crowds of both Jews and non-Jews. If you look carefully, you will find plaques memorializing the atrocities during WWII. This is a part of French history that most French would prefer to forget.

During the last ten years, the small Jewish shops have been largely crowded out and the Rue des Rosiers has become notable for fashion. The quaint boutiques of days-gone-by have given way to gleaming minimalist showrooms for some of Europe’s trendiest labels.

Officially, this street is in the Marais district, which extends along the Rue de Rivoli a short distance away, and some refer to the area as Saint Paul because of the proximity of the Place Saint-Paul.
