The World's Biggest Family in Mizoram, India :
An Indian man from the northeastern state of Mizoram named Ziona Chana, who is believed to have headed the world’s largest family, recently died, survived by his 39 wives, 89 children, and 36 grandchildren. It's also hard to estimate the exact size of Chana's family. Few claim he had 39 wives, 89 children, 36 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, which adds up to 164 people. The enormous family lives together in a four-storey house called Chuar Than Run, or New Generation House, with 100 rooms. Chana's wives share a dormitory close to his private bedroom. Ziona Chana's biggest house is a major tourist attraction in the state, with people from around the world coming to the village to get a peek into the family's lifestyle. The family belongs to a Christian sect, Chana Pawl, that has about 2,000 followers. They all live around Chana's house in Baktawng Tlangnuam, about 55km from Mizoram's capital, Aizawl.The obvious attraction of polyandry is that village-sized families live under one roof. What amazes tourists is their self-sustainability as all members work in the same village, including patriarch Chana, and never venture out for a living.
We were so glad to see their big house, and we had a few conversations with Ziona Chana's grand children. Due to overflowing COVID cases, we are restricted from entering the house as part of health safety.
