Silent 60 - Catamaran électrique - Premiers essais en mer

Ce nouveau catamaran électrique de Silent Yachts a été présenté en avant-première mondiale au Cannes Yachting Festival 2021. Nous avons pu le tester à Palma de Majorque avec des puissants moteurs de 2 x 250 kW - la vitesse maximum atteinte est proche de 13 noeuds.
Le Silent 60 reprend le flambeau du 64, premier catamaran électrique à avoir traversé l’Atlantique. La première unité, tout juste mise à l’eau, a pu valider son cahier des charges, c’est-à-dire naviguer sans brûler de carburant – et donc sans émissions polluantes – jusqu’à 4-5 nœuds. Le Silent 60, comme tous les autres modèles de la marque, est bien sûr propulsé par deux moteurs électriques. Le constructeur propose trois formules – 2 x 50 kW, 2 x 200 kW, et 2 x 340 kW couplés à deux petits moteurs électriques de 14 kW. Prolongées à l’avant par une casquette et à l’arrière par un grand bimini, les superstructures sont conçues pour supporter une surface maximum de panneaux solaires (42 m2, contre 30 pour le Silent 55). Une version dénommée 62 3-Deck transforme le flybridge en véritable pont supérieur.

This new electric catamaran from Silent Yachts was presented in World Premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021. We were able to test it in Palma de Mallorca with powerful 2 x 250 kW engines - the maximum speed reached is close to 13 knots.
This new model is taking over the torch from the 64, the first electric catamaran to have crossed the Atlantic. The recently launched hull #1 was able to validate its specifications, i.e. sailing without burning any fuel, thereby not emitting any pollutants, at up to 4/5 knots. The Silent 60, like all the other models from the brand, is of course powered by twin electric motors. The manufacturer offers three formulas - 2 x 30 kW, 2 x 250 kW, and 2 x 220 HP coupled with two small 14 kW electric motors. Extended forward at the front of the coachroof by a cap, and aft by a large bimini, the superstructures are designed to support a maximum surface area of solar panels (450 sq ft/42 m², compared with 325/30 for the Silent 55). A version known as the 62-3 Deck sees the flybridge transformed into a real upper deck.

Our motor yacht broke 2 days before our trip! Will we end up with a solar yacht or sailing yacht?

Our recent trip to The Bahamas was actually a 2-part adventure, with the first 5 days spent in and around our private villa on Pink Sands beach and the following 5 days... sailing through the Exumas on a private yacht!

The yacht charter had been in the works for months—it would be our first overnight on the ocean and certainly one of our most expensive trips ever. But little did we know just how risky such plans could be.

We had already flown our family of 5 to Harbour Island and spent several days enjoying the sand and local nightlife—when we got an email from our friends at Inspirato Bespoke, letting us know that our yacht had just returned from a previous charter with significant damage. Too much damage, it was deemed, to let it go out again. And thus began a whirlwind of whiplash, frustration, surprise, and confusion as we spent the next 2 days deciding just what kind of charter—if any—we would end up taking. Would we cancel? Would we switch from a motor yacht to a sailing yacht? Or would our dream come true and we'd have a serendipitous opportunity to live aboard a Silent Yachts solar catamaran?

The specifications of an owner of numerous large sailing catamarans who is switching to motor power is necessarily demanding, especially given that his objective is to pursue a program of long passages. Only a top-of-the-range one-off could really meet his requirements. JFA shipyard (Concarneau - France), architect Marc Lombard, and designer Franck Darnet took up the challenge.
In the heart of the magnificent natural setting of the Glénans archipelago in southern Brittany, deserted on the eve of winter, we discovered 4 EVER.
The hulls are made of aluminum, while the deck, superstructure and wheelhouse use composite materials. With its two 500 HP Cummins engines, the 78 Power cruises at 12 knots, with three more knots to reach top speed. The objective, thanks to this moderate engine size, the large tank capacity and the extensive work that’s gone into controlling the displacement, is to offer transatlantic range. The deck layout presents some interesting innovations: the wheelhouse on the flybridge is an enclosed space intended for navigation but also for relaxation with a bench seat and a desk. This semi-custom range of motoryachts now features a new model, with a Long Island 86 Power currently in build.

Le cahier des charges d’un armateur de nombreux grands catamarans à voile qui passe au moteur est forcément exigeant, surtout si son objectif est de poursuivre un programme de grandes traversées. Seul un one-off haut de gamme pouvait vraiment répondre à ses desiderata. Le chantier JFA (Concarneau), l’architecte Marc Lombard et le designer Franck Darnet ont relevé le défi.
Au cœur du magnifique écrin naturel de l’archipel des Glénan, désert à la veille de l’hiver, nous avons découvert 4 EVER.
Les coques sont réalisées en aluminium, alors que le pont, les superstructures et la timonerie font appel au composite. Avec ses deux moteurs de 500 CV Cummins, le 78’ Power navigue à 12 nœuds en vitesse de croisière et trois nœuds de plus en vitesse de pointe. L’objectif, grâce à cette motorisation modérée, à la grande capacité des réservoirs et à un travail approfondi quant à la maîtrise du déplacement, est d’offrir une autonomie transatlantique. Le plan de pont présente des innovations intéressantes : la timonerie sur le flybridge est un espace clos destiné à la navigation, mais aussi à la détente, avec une banquette et un bureau. Cette gamme semi-custom de multiyachts se décline désormais avec un nouveau modèle, puisqu’un Long Island 86’ Power est en construction.
