Therefore young students are a large part of the local population. In the summer months the population can grow to 100,000 with the tourists.
Rethymnon is a very nice city with an old Greco-Venetian centre and a large sandy beach (20 kilometer). Located in the old centre is the Fortezza (Fortress), the Loggia (Venetian Town Hall) and the old Venetian harbour with an elegant lighthouse. Rethymnon is also the capital of the province of Rethymnon.

Rethymno Greece is a laid-back prefecture located between the regions of Chania and Heraklion. Relatively untouched by international tourists, Rethymno still keeps its traditional charm.
The video was recorded 14th of September 2020.
On the northern side of Rethymno Crete, there are some cosmopolitan seaside resorts, such as Bali, Adelianos, Kampos, Panormos, and Platanias. They are perfect for your stay, as they have a selection of Rethymno hotels and villas. But, if you seek a laid-back place to stay, a drive around Rethymno will get you to many secluded places, such as Agia Galini and Plakias.
The center of activities in Rethymnon is Rethymno Old Town. The architecture of Rethymno Town is strongly influenced by the Venetians, who ruled the island in the past. This picturesque town is full of narrow alleys, elegant mansions, arches, and boasts a beautiful Venetian port. The port of Rethymno is hands down the most popular spot of the town! It is lined with cafeterias and restaurants, while the seafront promenade is perfect for evening strolls. Another vestige of the Venetian occupation is Fortezza, an imposing medieval castle that stands on a hill above the town.
The northern and southern coasts of Rethymno are fringed with beautiful beaches, such as Bali, Panormos, Adelianos Kampos, Plakias, and Agia Galini. Rethymno beaches are not the only standouts of the region, though. The inland holds many surprises: traditional villages, impressive gorges, and monasteries, such as Preveli and Arkadi. If you want to introduce yourself to the local culture, a visit to the villages of Rethymno is a must!

Το Ρέθυμνο είναι η τρίτη μεγαλύτερη πόλη της Κρήτης με πληθυσμό περίπου 32000. Η παλιά πόλη του Ρεθύμνου αποτελεί ένα από τα ομορφότερα αξιοθέατα για τον επισκέπτη της Κρήτης, ο οποίος έχει την δυνατότητα να περιπλανηθεί στο παρελθόν. Η πόλη με τα γραφικά στενάκια και τα πανέμορφα μνημεία διατηρεί στο σύνολο τους τον πολεοδομικό ιστό, όπως αυτός διαμορφώθηκε κατά την διάρκεια της Ενετοκρατίας και της Τουρκοκρατίας. Κοντά στην παλιά πόλη με τα γραφικά σοκάκια με τους κήπους και τα αρώματα, ο επισκέπτης αξίζει να επισκεφτεί το μεγαλύτερο φρούριο στην Κρήτη, το μεγαλοπρεπές φρούριο της Fortezza. Rethymnon is the third largest city of Crete with a population of about 32000. The old town is one of the nicest attractions for visitors to Crete, who have the ability to roam in the past. The town with the quaint streets and the beautiful monuments reserves its Venetian and Ottoman hues.Near the old town with the narrow streets, the visitor shall visit the largest fortress in Crete, the majestic Fortezza. Other attractions include the small Venetian harbor with the lighthouse, Venetian Loggia, Rimondi Fountain, Santa Maria, History Museum, Nerantza Mosque, St. Francis Basilica, Great Gate (Porta Guora), Mosque of Kara Musa Pasha and Venetian mansions in Street Arkadi. Finally, visitors can enjoy their bath in the vast sandy beach starting east of the port of Rethymnon.

Rethymno Crete | Palms, Sea & History - 4K
Driving along the scenic beach road in Rethymno, Crete. Rethymno is the third largest city in the island of Crete and has a population of more than 30,000 inhabitants (near 40k for the municipal unit).
Rethymno dates back to the Bronze age and the whole area is rich in ancient history, most notably through the Minoan civilization centered at Knossos east of Rethymno.
Rethymno began a period of growth when the Venetian conquerors of the island decided to put an intermediate commercial station between Heraklion and Chania, acquiring its own bishop and nobility in the process. Today's old town (palia poli) was almost entirely built by the Republic of Venice. It is one of the best-preserved old towns in Crete.
The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, the small Venetian harbor and narrow streets.
The city's Venetian-era citadel, the Fortezza of Rethymno, (appearing at the 12th minute), is one of the best-preserved castles in Crete.
The town was captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1646 during the Cretan War (1645–69) and remained occupied for almost three centuries. The town, called Resmo in Turkish, was the center of a sanjak (administrative part of a province) during Ottoman rule.
During the Battle of Crete (20–30 May 1941), the Battle of Rethymno was fought between German paratroopers and the Second Australian Imperial Force and Hellenic Army. Although initially unsuccessful, the Germans won the battle after receiving reinforcements from Maleme (a small village) in the Northwestern part of the island.
Today the city's main income is from tourism. Agriculture is also notable, especially for olive oil and other Mediterranean products.

Rethymno (Greek: Ρέθυμνο, [ˈreθimno], also Rethymno, Rethymno, Rethymnon and Rethymnos) a city of just over 30,000 people (about 40,000 for a municipality) in Greece, capital of the Rethymno regional unit on the island of Crete, formerly Latin Catholic the bishopric of Rethimo (–Ario) and the former Latin title see.
Rethymno was originally built during the Minoan civilization (ancient Rithymna and Arsinoe). The city was prominent enough to mint its own coins and support the growth of the city. One of these coins is today depicted as the coat of arms of the city: two dolphins in a circle. The citadel of the Venetian city, Fortezza Rethymno, is one of the best preserved castles in Crete. Other monuments include the Neratze Mosque (Odeon Municipal Arts Center), the Great Gate (Μεγάλη Πόρτα or Porta Guora), Rimondi Square and the Loggia.
During the Battle of Crete (20-30 May 1941), the Battle of Rethymno fought between the German paratroopers and the Australian Second Imperial Army and the Greek Army. Despite initial setback, the Germans won the battle with reinforcements from Maleme in the northwestern part of the island.
Today, the city's main income is tourism. Over the past 20 years, many new facilities have been built. Agriculture is also noteworthy, especially olive oil and other Mediterranean foods.
