[S1 - Eps. 73] TO THE AFGHAN BORDER

Finishing the PAMIR HIGHWAY! - TAJIKISTAN - The Way Overland - Episode 73

Our lush green sun-kissed hilltop camp spot we left the last episode on decided to surprise us with a turn for the worse the following morning so we decided to push on and get off the mountain as soon as possible to avoid potentially getting stuck.

The track was saturated from the heavy rain and the low cloud only enhanced the dramatic scenery. The climb to the 3258m pass took us up though the farming fields, sharp rocks, raging rapids, and snow all the while passing landmine warning signs. We were intrigued to see a heard of sheep and their shepherd roaming the hill behind the signage. The mountains here are covered in landmines planted during the civil war from 1992 - 1997. Mines still cover approx. 2500 square kilometres of Tajikistan with international efforts now assisting to de-mine. Something to keep in mind when going off road!!

Once crossing the pass the weather begun to ease and sunshine was on the mountainous horizon. The opposing side of the range was different than the Wakhan Valley we had just left, the topography appearing to cause more rainfall and less sunshine. The tracks resultantly were very muddy and there were countless landslides, one which stopped us in our tracks. From the adjacent side of the valley we could see the roughly 100m wide slide had taken out a significant amount of the road ahead of us. After speaking to some local shepherds and putting the binoculars to use we could see that 1, there was another, almost larger slide further down the valley, and 2. that thankfully there had been a makeshift road cut in on our side of the valley to bypass the obstruction. We slowly took the very narrow and muddy track down to the small village at the bottom, crossed a creek, a bridge, and tackled the bottom of the bigger landslide thankfully following some ruts to stop us sliding off the track. The damp weather continued as the valley narrowed and after several hours we followed the angry brown river out the bottom of the valley and into the wide open farming fields. This marked the end of the potholes, corrugations, and our time in the mountains for now.

We cruised into the capital Dushanbe and found ourselves another great camp spot in the orchards to the East of the City. Although this spot was beautiful and had an amazing view, we needed to head down in to the city to stock up on supplies, do some servicing on the Troopy, catching up on these episodes, and check in with family.

Finding cost effective places to stay in cities that have parking is never easy so after trawling the internet and driving to several, we found a great family run hostel called City Hostel. It has a big secure parking area, great breakfast and WIFI, and they were happy for us to stay in the Troopy! Win! We stayed for a few nights making the most of the power to trying to catch up on the videos and run errands.
We had noticed a slight noise coming from the front of the Troopy when 4wding so we wanted to get on top of that. To attempt to isolate the noise Mark greased all the front components with the next step to drop and replace the diff oil. We visited around 7 different ‘oil shops’ none which had what we were looking for. After several hours we were lucky to come across a workshop, which specialised in Mercedes, who had an oil which would suffice for now. Buying oils in this part of the world has to be done with a degree of caution as black market products run rife. An extreme amount of effort is put into the fake packaging so distinguishing between real and counterfeit is not easy, and to be honest, although we searched hard we can not be guaranteed ours was legitimate. Moments like this really make you appreciate the little conveniences of home and the ability to duck down to the local car store and buy exactly what you want and know you’re buying the real deal.

In the end the oil was changed by a group of friendly mechanics and the noise resided. We did a spot of shopping, left the hostel, and hit the road again and stocked up and ready for another adventure into Allaudin Lake.

Thanks for watching!

DRIVING the WAKHAN VALLEY! - TAJIKISTAN - The Way Overland - Episode 72

Following the Panj River down the valley, the days were becoming a little warmer and we were beginning to see more people around as we crossed over the halfway point of our time in the Wakhan.

Our next stop was Yamchun Fort, one of many fort ruins which can be found in the Wakhan and date back to the third century BC. Many of them, like Yamchun were built to service the silk route, and although appearing quite deteriorated, Yamchun Fort is actually the most well preserved in the region. We wandered around for an hour or so, taking it all in and tried to imagine what it would of been like centuries ago when it was being used.

Our plans for the rest of the day were to drive to Ishkashem, have a quick lunch stop and continue on looking for somewhere to camp for the night. We kept a lookout for tracks going off down towards the river and managed to find a great spot to set up which was hidden from the road and had incredible views up to the mountains in Afghanistan.

In Ishkashem, if you time your trip to be there on a Saturday you can cross the border to the market which is held on the Afghan side. Unfortunately our timing didn’t work out to go to the market though we’ve heard it’s a great experience!

From Ishkashem to Khorog, which is the end/start point of the Wakhan, the scenery is incredible as the valley walls come closer together and you pass through more small villages. There’s not a huge amount of places to camp so we just enjoyed the drive and continued on.

With no real need to stop in Khorog for anything, we stopped in for lunch and to get some groceries, and continued driving west towards Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. Khorog is a beautiful town which sits at 2,200 metres and is actually home to the second highest botanical garden in the world at 2,320 metres.

We kept driving, working our way back up another mountain range and found a nice spot to set up for the night on a green hillside with views of the mountains surrounding us.

(Cheers Jerome for the spot!)

Thanks for watching and we hope you enjoyed following our journey through the Wakhan!

HIGHEST paved border crossing IN THE WORLD. PAKISTAN to KYRGYZSTAN - The Way Overland - Episode 61

Picking up where we left off..

We’re at the end of our time in the beautiful Pakistan. With a deadline to get to the Khunjerab Pass (Pakistan-China border crossing) we checked out of Pakistan in the village Sost and continued another 80km through the Khunjerab National Park up to the pass. The Khunjerab Pass which is the highest-paved international border crossing in the world and the highest point on the Karakoram Highway at 4700m.

The reason for having a deadline is because to cross China you are required to be escorted with a guide from entry to exit of the country. These guides aren’t cheap though unfortunately that’s the only option if you’re wanting to get to Central Asia from Pakistan. We shared the cost with another couple, which ended up costing US$1800 per vehicle.

Checking in and out of China, from our experience, was rather arduous; hours were spent with the border officials searching our car and our electronics. We might share some videos from our China crossing later on, but for now we’re going to skip over it and fast forward to Kyrgyzstan.

Ahhhh.. how good it felt to enter this beautiful country! We crossed the Torugart Port border late and drove in the dark for about 40 minute. When we woke the following morning we were greeted with the the most epic landscape; a big wide open plain valley, mountains, herds of sheep and horses, Larders and no one around. AND to top off our dramatic introduction to Kyrgyzstan, some local shepherds on their horses wandered over to say hi to us and offered for me to take his horse for a ride. Heaven!

From here we drove a little further north to check out an old caravanserai, Tash Rabat. Tash Rabat was used during the 15th century as a roadside inn where travellers (caravaners) could rest and recover from the day's journey on the Silk Road. Inside we discovered 31 rooms completely made of stacked stone. We didn’t intend to spend the night here though it was just so picturesque. The caretaker had a lovely little guesthouse and offered for us to camp outside and to cook us dinner.

Moving on we drove to Naryn, the first town you come across after entering from Torugart Port. Here we found a great little supermarket for us to replenish the Troopy and get ourselves set up with local sim cards. Just a few kilometres out of Naryn we found a beautiful spot to set up camp in the hills.

The landscape in Kyrgyzstan has been so beautiful, and with the local culture being nomadic finding places to camp was the easiest we’d experienced since leaving Australia.

Our next stop is Issyk-Kul Lake, the second-largest mountain lake in the world and seventh deepest. Looking at photos which paint beautiful beachy scenes with mountains over the horizon, we were so excited to get there. Although we arrived a couple of months early to be feeling those summer vibes, we couldn’t of been more happy to be arrive.

That's it for this episode, thanks for watching! Join us in the next one as we continue exploring the beautiful Kyrgyzstan.

Special thanks to everything for their support over the last few years and particularly in the last few months. We’re so happy to be sharing these experiences with you all again.
