KUMANO KODO: Pilgrimage to Japan's Spiritual Origins

If you are going to watch one video about the KUMANO KODO, this is it!

The Kumano Kodo is a set of ancient pilgrimage routes that crisscross the mountainous Kii peninsula of Japan. They link isolated sacred sites with a unique mixture of Buddhism and native belief systems.

This virtual tour begins on the east coast of the peninsula in Tanabe City and follows the Nakahechi pilgrimage route into the mountains through local villages, introducing the history, culture, and sights, finishing at Nachisan, the site of Japan's tallest waterfall. Places visited include the three Grand Shrines of Kumano called the Kumano Sanzan: Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha. Logistics such as local transport, places to stay, and convenient tools to help plan a trip are highlighted.

Introducing the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage routes in Japan

The Kumano Kodo offers a different view of Japan: far removed from the modern cities, this is a world of forested slopes, hidden valleys, waterfalls, traditional villages, moss-covered stone deities and tranquil oji shrines. There are opportunities to experience hot-spring bathing and to sample local cuisine as you follow in the footsteps of emperors, samurai, priests and ascetics traversing traditional flagstone paths and forest trails.

Kat Davis, author of the Cicerone guidebook to the Kumano Kodo, introduces the treks in this video.

[Beautiful Japan] World Heritage Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes

From ancient times Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage routes have witnessed people's thoughts and emotions.
It is the way of salvation and forgiveness of Japan, created by the pilgrims for centuries.

Nakahechi - the route spiritual to sacred Kumano connecting people`s thoughts and emotions

From about 1,200 years ago many Japanese Imperial and aristocratic families and (tanka) poets used this Nakahechi route when going on pilgrimage to Kumano-Sanzan. People used to undertake a purification rite in the rivers flowing down between the mountains to purify body, mind and soul, and then resume their journey ever deeper into the heart of this ancient route.
These hardships enabled them to appreciate the joy of approaching the other worldly abode of the Gods. They expressed their emotions in the form of poems such as those written by Fujiwara-no-Teika and Izumi-Shikibu. These were inscribed on metal plaques and mounted on rocks along the route. Many tales are told about the spiritual power and compassion of the Gods of Kumano.

PART 1: KUMANO KODO PILGRIMAGE TRAILS | WAKAYAMA, JAPAN

The Kumano Kodo is an ancient pilgrimage trail in the mountains of Wakayama (south of Kyoto) where you can walk with a light pack from guesthouse to guesthouse for a few days. It’s a brilliant way to experience Japan’s rural side and ancient religious traditions. - InsideKyoto

This is our second time trip to Wakayama, Prefecture and trekked Kumano Kodo since the first time we visited in the year 2013.
This time we spent 5 days exploring Wakayama. We started to hike from the most popular and accessible route is the Nakahechi, which starts at Takijiri to Hongu Taisha.

On our first night, we stayed at KumanoYasai Base, an accommodation near the beautiful rice fields and is fully equipped with everything you can think of. We also had our barbecue while looking at the impressive view of the starry sky.

The next day, we continued our trek and took a lot of videos and drone shots. The beautiful nice scenic trail and river are so admirable.

We head down to the shrine to give thanks for successful trek. Hongu Taisha, one of the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano, is a highlight of the Nakahechi Trail. Across the main road, you will find the huge torii (Shinto Shrine gate).

Walk the Magose pass on the Kumano Kodo trail, UNESCO World heritage site

■Activity details■
Long ago, it was popular for people from all across Japan to walk hundreds of kilometers to tour sacred sites such as Ise Grand Shrine and Kumano Sanzan (the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano). Many travelers walked the perilous Magose Pass, which is part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range that leads to Kumano Sanzan. The beautiful stone paved path leading deep into the forest has been lovingly maintained by locals for centuries, and still looks as it did long ago. This program offers participants the chance to dress in travel garb recreated from ukiyo-e prints and historic documents and walk the Magose Past just as ancient travelers did. Partial proceeds from the program are used to preserve the stone paving and keep the scenery in pristine condition for future generations.
