SAN-NRT! Japan Airlines 787-8 business class was everything I hoped it would be

The music I use: - AMAZING for YouTubers

Japan Airlines has been flying to San Diego for 5 years now, and just last week I finally got a chance to give this flight to NRT a try. This flight featured the Shell Flat Neo business class product, which was decent, but nowhere near as good as their new Sky Suite (I have a video of that coming soon). Food and service were (as expected) phenomenal.

Aircraft was a 787-8, registration JA835J, and I had seat 8K for this 11 hour flight. Enjoy!

This is NOT a promotional video. I pay for all of my flights and hotels (and I always tell you how much!) so I can be as honest and impartial as possible. I do not receive any special treatment that wouldn’t otherwise be publicly accessible, in fact, the hotels and airlines have no idea about my visit and that's the way I like it!

Japan Airlines Business Class 787 Tokyo Narita to Kuala Lumpur - GOOD

I took Japan Airlines Business Class Sky Suites on Boeing 787 from Tokyo to Kuala Lumpur. It was a good flight with great service and excellent food. JAL never disappoints.

JAPAN AIRLINES B777-300 JL52 Business Class - Sydney to Tokyo (Haneda) (4K)

Sydney Airport to Tokyo (Haneda) on Japan Airlines, 24th December 2022

Being the day before Christmas, Sydney International Airport (T1) was like a zoo in the morning due to the number of people flying.

Check in was smooth, with a nice upgrade given from Economy to Premium Economy.

Whilst waiting for boarding, spent some time in the Qantas First Lounge, enjoying some Sweet Corn Fritters and Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon.

Boarding the JAL B777-300 was a short walk to gate 25, where I was paged soon after... now upgraded to a Business Class Sky Suite... THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Seat was very comfortable, especially when the mattress pad was put in place for lying flat.

The food was amazing, starting with an assortment plate, then a Beef Fillet Steak and Chocolate Mousse for dessert.

Pre arrival meal was the Seafood Chowder, Cheese Plate followed by Ice Cream, Fruit and a coffee.

After arriving at Tokyo (Haneda) headed straight up to the JAL First Lounge for another bite to eat, and a shower. This lounge is something else.

Japan Airlines Business Class Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner | Bangkok to Tokyo Haneda

Airline: Japan Airlines
Flight Number: JL32
Route: BKK-HND
Class: Business Class
Aircraft: Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner
Registration: JA844J
Delivered: May 2016
Flight Duration: 6 hours 10 minutes
Distance: 2,855 Miles

Blogpost:

Overall Impression:
Japan Airlines provides an impressive business class experience on the Bangkok to Tokyo route, with the Boeing 787-8 featuring the Sky Suite (Apex Suites) business class seats. With a 2-2-2 seating configuration and fully flat bed, these seats provide excellent comfort and direct aisle access. The crew on this flight exceeded expectations, delivering attentive and refined service. Additionally, the catering was superb, particularly the Japanese meal which was light and fresh, and the western meal that my companion enjoyed.

What I Liked:
The in-flight service - The in-flight service on this flight was exceptional, thanks to the amazing crew who attended to our needs throughout the journey. From the moment we boarded the plane, the crew was charming and polished, making us feel well looked after. Once the flight took off, the crew was attentive and responsive, regularly checking in with passengers to ensure their needs were met. The service was prompt and efficient, and the crew's professionalism and friendly demeanor made the flight a truly enjoyable experience.

The Catering - When it comes to catering in business class, Japan Airlines never disappoints. On this flight, I had the pleasure of trying the Japanese Meal, which began with a delightful assortment of appetizers followed by a main course of simmered chicken and saikyo style salmon served with rice, pickles, and miso soup. The meal was not only delicious but beautifully presented as well. My companion opted for the western meal, which was equally impressive, starting with an hors d'oeuvres plate accompanied by bread service, followed by a grilled sea bass entrée. We concluded our meal with a matcha mousse, which was a sweet and satisfying way to wrap up our dining experience. Overall, the catering on this flight was exceptional.

The Seat - As a frequent flyer, I have come to appreciate the apex suites seat for its exceptional comfort and privacy. The JAL Sky Suite seats on the Boeing 787 did not disappoint in this regard. The seats were both comfortable and functional, with intuitively placed storage, table, and seat controls that were within easy reach. I found the seats to be spacious, with ample legroom that added to the overall comfort of the journey. All in all, the seat design and features were well thought-out and provided an excellent experience.

What I didn't Like:

The lack of Personal Air Nozzles - JAL has a reputation for keeping their cabin temperature quite warm, which can make it difficult to get comfortable and fall asleep. However, on this flight, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the crew had kept the temperature relatively cool, making for a more comfortable experience. If only JAL would equip their planes with air nozzles, I would be an even happier traveler. Overall, the crew's attention to the temperature added to the positive experience on this flight.

The IFE System - The JAL Magic IFE system was available on this aircraft, and while the interface was straightforward and easy to navigate, the media content was somewhat limited compared to other carriers like AA. While there were still plenty of movies, TV shows, news, and music options available, I found the selection to be lacking in comparison. Additionally, browsing through the content using the small remote was a bit cumbersome, which was a minor inconvenience.

It's OK, I guess...

The Sakura Lounge in Bangkok - JAL operates its own lounge in Bangkok, which provides a comfortable space for passengers to relax before their flight. The lounge is spacious and offers plenty of seating options. Additionally, there are shower rooms available for passengers who want to freshen up before their flight. While the food and beverage selection may be somewhat limited, the lounge does offer made-to-order hot food options as well as a few packaged snacks. Overall, the JAL Sakura Lounge in Bangkok provides a pleasant and comfortable space for passengers to unwind and prepare for their journey.

The Amenities - As this was a medium-haul flight, the amenities provided at our seats were somewhat limited. Passengers were provided with slippers, a pillow and duvet set, bottled water, noise-canceling headphones, and a JAL mini amenity kit. While these amenities were adequate for the length of the flight, they were relatively basic compared to what other airlines may offer on longer journeys. The business class lavatories, however, featured a toto bidet washlet as well as some toiletries.

Blogpost:

After a delightful stay in Tokyo, it was time to journey back home. Our flights with Japan Airlines (JAL) has generally been very good and our previous experiences in business class were always positive. I am very fond of JAL's Sky Suite product (Apex Suite seat), which is installed on their 787s and 777-300ERs that are used in long-haul flights. Although these seats may not be groundbreaking anymore, they are still extremely comfortable for lounging, relaxing, and sleeping. Despite seeing several new staff members who were still in training among the ground crew and in-flight, the service level remained top-notch. The flight attendants were charming and provided exceptional service during meal service. In my opinion, the highlight of flying with JAL is the catering. As someone who loves Japanese food, I may have a slight bias, but I found everything I ordered during the flight to be fresh, appetizing, and presented beautifully.

What I liked:

The JAL First Class Lounge at Haneda Airport - Our Oneworld Emerald status gave us access to the JAL First Class Lounge at Haneda. It offers plenty of comfortable seating options (including massage chairs), and scrumptious, freshly prepared Japanese cuisine. This lounge is undoubtedly one of my favorites and we make it a a point to visit when we are flying via Haneda.

The Dining Experience - The food served during the flight from Tokyo was nothing short of exceptional. The meals were of restaurant quality and tasted incredibly delicious. I also greatly appreciate the dine-on-demand service. The Japanese meal I ordered was fresh and elegantly presented, while my companion's wagyu sirloin was expertly prepared and scrumptious. For the pre-landing meal, we opted for the junwakei chicken which was a delightful way to conclude the flight.

The Exceptional Service - The flight attendants we encountered were extremely friendly and eager to accommodate our needs. They were proactive in offering us drink refills and regularly checked in to ensure we had everything we needed.

The Business Class Seats - JAL's Apex Suite seats are arranged in a 2-2-2 configuration for their business class. Despite the slightly dense layout of the seats on the 787, they were still very comfortable for lounging and sleeping, and each business class seat offers direct aisle access.

What I didn’t like:

The In-flight Entertainment - The in-flight entertainment offered decent selection of content, but I found the experience of browsing through it all using the small remote rather than a larger screen to be less enjoyable.

Lack of Individual Air Nozzles - Unfortunately, the aircraft lacked individual air nozzles which is a personal issue for me. However, the flight crew was kind enough to maintain a cool cabin temperature throughout the flight.

It’s fine, I guess...

The Amenities - JAL does not provide pajamas in their business class, but they do offer slippers and cardigans (for loan). The Sony noise-cancelling headphones provided were of decent sound quality, although not the best. The Maison Kitsune amenity kit was basic and minimal. The duvet and pillow were acceptable, and they also offer Airweave mattress pads. On the other hand, the lavatories were impeccably clean, stocked with toiletries, and even equipped with Toto washlets.

Overall impression:

Japan Airlines has always impressed us, even in economy class. The consistency of their food and service is what sets them apart and makes them a favorite airline of ours. The Apex Suite seats, which I consider among the top in the business class, are just the cherry on top. Good job, JAL! Another enjoyable flight.

About ANA Airlines (Wikipedia):
All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (全日本空輸株式会社, Zen Nippon Kūyu Kabushiki gaisha, ANA) is an airline of Japan. Headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, ANA operates services to both domestic and international destinations[4] and had more than 20,000 employees as of March 2016.[5] In October 1999, the airline became a member of Star Alliance.

In addition to its mainline operations, ANA controls several subsidiary passenger carriers,[6] including its regional airline, ANA Wings, Air Nippon, Air Do (a low-cost carrier operating scheduled service between Tokyo and cities in Hokkaido), and Allex Cargo (ANA Cargo - the freighter division operated by Air Japan). ANA is also the largest shareholder in Peach, a low-cost carrier joint venture with Hong Kong company First Eastern Investment Group. On 29 March 2013, ANA was named a 5-Star Airline by Skytrax. On 27 April 2018, ANA announced ANA Business Jet Co., Ltd., a joint venture with Sojitz to offer private jet charter flights.[7]

About Boeing 787 (from Wikipedia):
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is an American wide-body jet airliner developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. After dropping its unconventional Sonic Cruiser project, Boeing announced the conventional 7E7 on January 29, 2003, which focused largely on efficiency. The program was launched on April 26, 2004, with an order for 50 aircraft from All Nippon Airways (ANA), targeting a 2008 introduction. On July 8, 2007, a prototype 787 was rolled out without major operating systems, and then the aircraft experienced multiple delays until its maiden flight on December 15, 2009. Type certification was received in August 2011 and the first 787-8 was delivered in September 2011 before entering commercial service on October 26, 2011, with ANA.

At launch, Boeing targeted the 787 with 20% less fuel burn than replaced aircraft like the Boeing 767, carrying 200 to 300 passengers on point-to-point routes up to 8,500 nautical miles [nmi] (15,700 km; 9,800 mi), a shift from hub-and-spoke travel. The twinjet is powered by General Electric GEnx or Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 high-bypass turbofans. It is the first airliner with an airframe primarily made of composite materials and makes extensive use of electrical systems. Externally, it is recognizable by its four-window cockpit, raked wingtips, and noise-reducing chevrons on its engine nacelles. Development and production rely increasingly on subcontractors around the world, with final assembly at Boeing South Carolina in North Charleston, after being assembled in the Boeing Everett Factory in Washington until March 2021.
