Gibraltar: Why There's Wild Monkeys, WW2 Tunnels and British Forces | BFBS

When we were in Gibraltar a few months ago, we had to visit the famous monkeys up on the Rock! Turns out though, that there's a pretty cool story behind why they're still there. In this episode, we explore a little about the history of Gibraltar - and why it's British - while going on a bit of safari to find some British monkeys (Barbary macaques). Fun fact, although they don't have tails, they are still monkeys (not apes)!

The monkey population in Gibraltar is currently increasing. There are around 300 animals living in the Upper Rock area of the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, and supposedly they sometimes make forays into the town.

Gibraltar Monkeys Try To Steal My $hit_thePlanetraveler S02E05

If you want an chance to get up close and personal with monkeys, Gibraltar is the place for you. The main residents on the top of the rock of Gibraltar are monkeys. These apes, as they are referred to here, are quite comfortable around humans so it's a great opportunity to get close to them, but not too close. Just like monkeys elsewhere, these characters will not pass up a chance to snatch whatever it is you have in your hand. Be on your guard.

Gibraltar, British overseas territory on a narrow, rocky peninsula extending into the Mediterranean Sea from SW Spain. Most of the peninsula is occupied by the Rock of Gibraltar, one of the Pillars of Hercules, which guards the northeastern end of the Strait of Gibraltar, linking the Mediterranean with the Atlantic. The town of Gibraltar lies at the northwest end of the Rock of Gibraltar. The peninsula is connected with the mainland by a low sandy area of neutral ground. West of the peninsula is the Bay of Gibraltar, an inlet of the strait. There is a safe enclosed harbor of 440 acres. The rock, of Jurassic limestone, contains caves in which valuable archaeological finds have been made. It is honeycombed by defense works and arsenals, which are largely concealed. A tunnel bisects the rock from east to west.

During the many years that Gibraltar was a British fortress, most of the area was taken up by military installations, and the civilian population was kept small. Many of the laborers lived in the Spanish border town of La Línea. The population now consists of people of Spanish, Italian, English, Maltese, Portuguese, German, and North African descent. More than three quarters of the population is Roman Catholic; there are Protestant, Muslim, and Jewish minorities. English is the official language, and Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese are spoken.

The Rock of Gibraltar:
Barbary macaques in Gibraltar:
The monkeys encounter humans on a daily basis and are all too often fed by well-meaning but ill-informed visitors. Their general health has improved under GONHS and there is a £500 fine if anyone is caught feeding a monkey. They are fed at locations around the Rock daily on a diet strictly observed by experts and though it may seem basic to you to the monkeys it is balanced for their health, wellbeing and teeth.
They are wild but used to humans, so it is perfectly ok to approach close enough to take a photograph, some may even pose! You may sit near them but more likely they will come close to you, if they do approach you please do not touch them. You may get away with it once but touch an ape that got out of his cave the wrong side that morning and you will get a bite. They are very protective of their young and often show signs of aggression to keep you at bay. Stay away! One thing the monkeys love is a plastic bag. They associate the sound and sight of plastic bags with food. They will grab it immediately and please do not try and stop them as they will bite. It is best to let it go and hope they drop it after their curiosity is satisfied. Only then can you recover whatever was inside they have disregarded as a non-food item. They also sometimes jump onto people to get from one perch to another so if they do sit on you just bend over to tip them off, they should go and pick on someone else. If you buy an ice cream or food at the Cable Car Top Station eat it inside. Many a Tour Guide counts the seconds it stays in the hand of the unsuspecting before it is taken by a monkey.

Gibraltar is a tiny British territory located on the southern tip of Spain just 14 km north of Morocco.
It is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar and is commonly known as, The Rock.

We took a drive down from Marbella Spain to see this iconic landmark and to enjoy a little slice of Britain in the far south of Europe. We started with a Gibraltar Street walk from Spain to cross the border into the British territory of Gibraltar.

Our first stop was the top of the rock observation deck that offered stunning panoramic views of Gibraltar. We not only saw Gibraltar, but we saw across straight of Gibraltar to Morocco in Africa and Spain’s Costa del Sol. It is truly spectacular. But the star attraction is definitely the rock of Gibraltar itself.

One of the star attractions of Gibraltar is the Ape’s Den where you’ll find a group of monkeys who have decided to call this place home at the cable car’s mid-station. But the Gibraltar monkeys are everywhere. Legend has it that as long as the macaques inhabit Gibraltar, the British will remain.

The monkeys were so important to the British, that they were placed under the armies protection and Winston Churchill even ordered more monkeys from Morocco when their numbers were on the decline. They can be very feisty though so make sure to keep your distance.

The Skywalk is a glass walking dangling 340 meters above sea level. It offers panoramic views of three countries and two continents and is said to be able to withstand the weight of 5 asian elephants.

It’s an amazing hike through the rock of Gibraltar and we followed the rocky trails from one attraction to another. Gibraltar was heavily fortified and there are plenty of ruins, guard stations and old lookouts to explore.

If you are visiting southern Europe, make sure to put the Rock of Gibraltar on your travel itinerary

Jumped & Attacked by Barbary Macaque Monkeys in Gibraltar

It's a real life Planet of the Apes here in Gibraltar with the Barbary macaque monkeys. Make no mistake, these are not pets or zoo monkeys, these primates rule the Rock of Gibraltar. I get jumped and attacked by a couple juvenile monkeys while walking around the top of the rock and the Nature Reserve, Saint Michael's Cave and the Ape Den. These Barbary Apes have claws and teeth, so always be cautious around them, although they are somewhat used to seeing humans on a daily basis.

Barbary Apes on the Rock of Gibraltar - 28th July, 2010

A short piece of footage featuring several Barbary Apes on the rock of Gibraltar. The Barbary Macaque population in Gibraltar is the last in the whole of the European continent, and, unlike that of North Africa, is thriving. At present there are some 230 animals in five troupes occupying the area of the Upper Rock. As they are a tailless species, they are also known locally as Barbary Apes or Rock Apes, despite the fact that they are monkeys (Macaca sylvanus). Forming a double paradox, locals simply refer to them as monos (Spanish: monkeys) when conversing in Spanish or Llanito (the local vernacular).

Monkey Attack ???? Gibraltar ???????? Barbary Macaque Europe's only monkeys

#monkey #Gibraltar #cabelcargibraltar

Originating from the Atlas Mountains and the Rif Mountains of Morocco, the Barbary macaque population residing in Gibraltar stands as the sole wild monkey community across the European continent. While numerous Barbary monkey populations in Africa face decline due to hunting and deforestation, the Gibraltar population demonstrates growth. By 2020, approximately 300 individuals spanning five troops inhabit the Upper Rock area within the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, occasionally venturing into the town. Due to their tailless nature, they are also colloquially referred to as Barbary apes or rock apes locally, despite their classification as monkeys (Macaca sylvanus). In Spanish conversations, speakers simply label them as monos (English: monkeys), despite English being the predominant language in the region, given its status as a British overseas territory.

Gibraltar: Rock of Ages, Land of Legends || Travelling Mantra || Gibraltar Part 2

Hey everyone, welcome back to my vlog! Today, we're venturing to a place unlike any other in Europe - Gibraltar, home to the one and only wild monkey population on the entire continent: the Barbary macaques! These cheeky fellas, also known as Apes' Den residents (cue monkey puns!), are actually an endangered species. But unlike their wild cousins in North Africa whose numbers are dwindling, the Barbary macaques here in Gibraltar are thriving. There are around 300 of them, living in social groups called troops. These monkeys are celebrities here. They're a major tourist attraction
