'The Privileged' Store in North Korea - Part 1

====================================================
Ok, so this is my 46th video that I uploaded, many people asked me..
How could you upload youtube video in NK?.
He uploads the video after he back to Indonesia, because he didn't dare if he upload directly from NK.
Nope..that is not entirely True..

#jakaparker #northkorea #koreautara

The answer is..

I already back to Indonesia, and currently I live in Indonesia..
My first 23 videos was uploaded when I was in North Korea.

The most different thing that when I uploaded video in NK, for a 15 minute video needed two days to upload, because the internet there was unstable due to electricity on off several times in a day..I can’t subscribe for cellular internet mobile because its way too expensive and..not reliable too...
but..when in Indonesia, I can choose which provider for internet and to upload a 15 minute video need only few minutes...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK..
back to this video..
I was going to a store which was located inside the Diplomatic Compound in Munsu District, behind Vietnam Embassy (you can check it out in Google Maps)
Sure..because these videos is about my daily life in NK...so I only posted about my routines things that I am doing in NK).

This store named Pyongyang Shop, which only several people who can access inside, only Foreigners and local Korean people who can get permission to be inside Diplomatic Compound (usually Korean people who works for foreign Organisations and embassies).

Btw.. sorry for bad English and Korean..

Any viewers who understand Korean language might be laughing hearing me trying to make conversations with the locals..please pardon me.

This restaurant is a special restaurant located inside the diplomatic compound in Pyongyang.
People who came here are usually diplomats, government officials, North Korean upper class and expatriates that live and work inside the diplomatic compound in Pyongyang. The rates are using foreign currency like US Dollar, Euro, Japan Yen and Chinese Yuan. The dishes vary from Korean, Chinese, and Western Cuisine.
We used to come here and eat foods containing seafood and veggies.

Wolhyang General Store in North Korea - Part 1

Please, READ THE DESCRIPTION!

I visited the WolHyang shop located in WolHyang District, near the Arch of Triumph downtown Pyongyang. The shop is frequently visited by foreign tourists, in this store there are available a variety of souvenirs such as artwork, herbs and so forth. My several visits to the store with my family or while I served as a photographer for several foreign delegations I took them to visit this store. In this store, it is allowed to take pictures and videos. The employees are also friendly and they allowed to take photos together. For this time I tried to take a video, my wife and I want to buy an embroidery painting but the kind of painting that I want is not available then my wife bought some Tea Ginseng. Several waitresses noticed my GoPro camera, but they don’t mind and thought it was a pocket camera.
=====================
Since I came to Pyongyang in November 2012 until I left Pyongyang in March 2016 I got so many experiences.

I just wanna share a bit of my life experience in North Korea, mostly in Pyongyang. We are foreigners (Diplomats, Expatriates) who live in Pyongyang can roam freely around Pyongyang, and diplomats got more privileged than other expatriates.

There are also many Americans (USA), Canadians, Korean American who works as teachers and professors in Pyongyang.

Foreigners can travel to other cities outside Pyongyang, but we must request permission to Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Korea.

Since I lived in North Korea, I already travel to other cities in Northern, Western, Southern and Eastern side. Sometimes I travel with a minder, sometimes I just drive my car by my own and with my family (without a minder),

COMPUTER STORE IN NORTH KOREA

Many people are asking about the technological developments in North Korea. About their knowledge of computers and the use of other electronic goods. North Korea today is different from North Korea before, now they are more open to technological developments. You can find some electronic and computer stores in Pyongyang city, and when you buy a computer or notebook then you will get it without a LAN port. The LAN port is removed, therefore we can not connect the notebook we bought with a LAN cable.

In this video, I followed my friend who bought a Notebook charger adapter at an electronics store in Pyongyang, North Korea. The store also sells various items such as televisions, washing machines, refrigerators, DSLR Cameras, External Hard disks, USB memory, Notebooks, and others.

'Argentina' Store in North Korea - Part 1

Please read this description.

Why I write 'ARGENTINA STORE'? Actually the name of the store is SEONBONG store..but we..the foreign residents who live in Pyongyang called this store as 'Argentina Store' because it was a lot of stuffs from Argentina sold in this store, even when I first came in 2012 there was still many argentina's products. But nowadays..the stuffs are varied, not many more from Argentina, but there are many from China, and Indonesia also.

I shopped to this store occasionally, usually I came to this store to buy some body care such as soaps and shampoos, snacks such as wafers and biscuits, and medicines because the prices are usually cheaper than some other stores. When I live there, there are nearly no One-Stop-Shopping in North Korea where you can find all the things you want in one place, usually I buy things in one store and then go find another things in other store. Well, there is some stores where you can find nearly all the things you want, but sometimes the price are not really acceptable, I mean, the price are more expensive than other store..

Local people also can do shopping in this store.

The Luxury Store in North Korea

This shop is called Rakwon Dept. Store, one of the fancy stores located in North Korea. 90% of products sold here are foreign products, and the price is quite 'classy'. One time I took my daughters to buy toys at this store, and my kids chose expensive toys, I refused to buy it and distract them to buy cheaper toys, then the chaos ensued. Lol

North Korean department store '89

During the World Festival of Youth and Students in North Korea we visited a fairly unconvincing dept store - but check out the glasses display!

One of the best Dept Store in Pyongyang - North Korea

Rakwon Department Store, which can be found on Changgwang Street in the capital’s central district, is operated by Daesung Corporation, part of the powerful No.39 Department of the Chosun Workers’ Party. Lying in an area near Changgwangwon, Air Koryo HQ and the Changgwangsan Hotel, with one of the city’s nicest apartment complexes directly behind it, the store boasts state-of-the-art facilities.

On the first floor, there is a supermarket selling food and other daily requirements, while electronics and clothes are to be found on the second floor.

As the pictures show, all prices are denominated in Euro.

I bought a car in March 2016, I bought it second handed from a Russian woman whose an expatriate too.

I have North Korea driver licence.

In this video is a Petrol station that located near Foreigners compound, I always bought petrol in this petrol station, because the petrol quality in this station is better than the other stations in DPRK, but the price is sure more expensive.

Since I Iived there, the price of petrol (Benzene 95) is fluctuate in in range of 0.74 USD - 0.92 USD per litre. Yes the price in USD, but we can pay in Euro and Chinese Yuan.
