Science lesson on the equator
We nearly missed the equator as we were pedalling out of Nanyuki. Fortunately, we spied it at the last minute, and managed to learn about the Coriolis effect too.

Ecuador At The Equator - Water Demonstration - Coriolis Effect
The Coriolis Effect explains how water will drain counterclockwise, clockwise or straight down, depending where you are on the Earth. This video, shot at the Middle Of The World demonstrates just that - from right at the Equator in Quito Ecuador. Note that there are no cuts, edits or other 'tricks' of the camera - this is shown just as demonstrated by our guide at the park. Very interesting to watch the leaves drain in the different directions. The effect is formulated by F=2mw^v Many Ecuador videos and more on this channel - be sure to subscribe!

Crossing the Equator
My first time crossing the equator by sea, as part of the Epic 70 Degrees journey sailing most of the length of the Atlantic Ocean, from Tierra del Fuego to Senegal, in West Africa, aboard the MV National Geographic Explorer. An incredible journey. I opted to get out and do the actual crossing of the equator by kayak, which was a lot of fun.
The Equator Demonstration
This was so cool - the video demonstrates how water moves clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the southern hemisphere and it is absolutely straight when you are standing on the equator.
Crossing the Equator in Ecuador - Mitad del Mundo and Calacali near Quito
Travelling to the Galápagos Islands we first stopped in Quito, right next to the equator line.
As it turns out the equator is not as straight forward as we thought. The world changes shape and therefore the equator moves as well. That imaginary line is more of a wide strip.
Mitad del Mundo is located within the area considered the equator and is the most visited tourist attraction in Ecuador. But the line that is 0º latitude on Google Maps runs through the small town of Calacalí north of Quito.
Both Mitad del Mundo and Calacalí is worth a visit! And in both places you can be walking across and stand on each side of a line to become a stereotypical tourist!

An equator is an imaginary line around the middle of the earth. It is halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole, at 0 degrees latitude. By definition, the latitude of the Earth’s equator is 0 degrees, while the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn each lie at 23.5 degrees latitude. Trip to the Equator - The Coriolis Effect.mpg
We made it to the center of the Earth -- at least we made it to the Equator, the meridian dividing the northern and southern hemispheres. For a small fee, we were able to see a demonstration of the Coriolis effect, the force caused by the earth's rotation. This force causes moving objects on the surface of the Earth to appear to veer to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern.
