Despite our attempt at keeping our Greenland Travel Documentary as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting clips.

Hunting:
The people of Greenland hunt seals, whales, and dolphins. Other than fish, these marine mammals are an important food source. Every part of the animal is used. Still, among some, this type of hunting will spark outrage. However, understand that very little grows in Greenland, as the summer lasts only around 2 months. Most fruits and vegetables, as well as all other types of food, need to be imported, causing high transport costs and emissions and resulting in astronomical prices. No citizen of Europe or North America has any right to judge the lifestyle of these people who rely on locally available, sustainable food sources.

Do we prefer whales swimming wild and free in the ocean? 100%. However, in our daily lives, most of us have the luxury of buying everything we could think of in a nearby supermarket. Greenlanders do not have that option.

Greenlanders know where their food comes from. Most of us in the West do not. It is easy to judge people and their lifestyles even if we know little about them. And if after all of that, you still believe Greenlanders should stop hunting seals, you are placing ideology above reason.

Full Disclosure:
This trip was supported by Visit Greenland. The tourism board paid for our flights from Iceland to Kulusuk as well as our helicopter flight from Kulusuk to Tasiilaq. Moreover, they supported us by funding some of the activities. Additionally, we didn’t have to pay for the trips with Tasiilaq Tours and Nunatak Adventures. All accommodations and other activities were self-funded.

This is Nuuk! - Greenland's Capital City Will Surprise You! (Cultural Travel Guide)

Founded as Godthåb by Hans Egede (The Apostle of Greenland), Nuuk is Greenland's capital and principal urban centre. As more Greenlanders become attracted to the capital's economic and cultural opportunities the pace of construction is relentless. This growth is both exciting and challenging. This short film provides some historical context as well as an overview of the sights and sounds. A particular thank you goes out to Ejvind Elsner of Atlantic Music for his hospitality and insight.

In response to the many negative comments about the comment in the film about the legacy of the missionary Hans Egede I would like to point out that this is not my personal view - it is the established Greenlandic view as expressed to visitors of the National Museum.
From the Greenland National Museum & Archive website:-
“The last 50 years have brought new perspectives on the significance of Hans Egede's influence on Greenland. In 1971, Greenland's 250th anniversary was celebrated in different ways, but largely expressed a very romantic notion of Hans Egede as a father-type figure to Greenland and the country's union with Christendom. Now in 2021, Hans Egede's arrival is seen in a more nuanced way. The focus is on reconciling a complicated past with the benefit of perspective and a more thoughtful understanding of the enduring influence of Christianity on Greenlandic society and culture. This includes changing political perspectives that have in recent years shifted public expressions of the 1721 anniversary from jubilant affairs to more respectful observances.”

Ilulissat - Greenland Travel (No. 1 Destination) - Visit The City of Icebergs! - (Travel Guide)

Travel to Greenland means experiencing a unique Inuit culture - and Icebergs! Ilulissat is one of the world's most remarkable destinations. Situated where the UNESCO recognised Ilulissat Icefjord enters Disko Bay, the town watches over a procession of icebergs that mesmerise with their fantastical shapes and colours. It is also a centre for sledge-dog culture and the howls of the dogs are an ever-present soundtrack. This short film provides a brief history of the settlement and also visits the Icefjord Centre, the Icefjord itself, and the Knud Rasmussen museum before taking to the water to view the icebergs up close. Thank you to Casper Christensen of Disko Line Explorer for providing a fascinating insight into the impact of climate change on this unique location.

WELCOME TO ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST ISOLATED PLACES - GREENLAND!

Today I arrived in one of the world's most remote villages, way out here on the rugged North Eastern shores of Greenland. It's called Ittoqqortoormiit (say that 5 times fast) and it's a fascinating place that feels like I'm on the moon!

Very few outsiders have ever visited this village because it's so remote, and I'm lucky to be one of them on board this Hurtigruten expedition!

Ittoqqortoormiit has a population of around 350 and the nearest town is thousands of kilometers away. The locals are called Inuits (the same ethnic group as Eskimos), and they survive from hunting and eating polar bears, walrus, seals, and whales.

Could you ever live here? Let me know in the comments below!

How to get to Greenland

Interested in how to get to Greenland? In this video, we talk about the basics of international travel to Greenland and how to get to Greenland.

Commercial airlines are the only way to get to Greenland unless you arrive on a cruise ship. There are 4 cities worldwide with direct flights to Greenland which are Copenhagen, plus three cities in Iceland (Reykjavik, Keflavik and Akureyri). Direct flights to Greenland from Iceland take around 2-3 hours, while the flight from Copenhagen to Greenland takes around 4 hours. The two airlines that currently fly to Greenland are the local airline Air Greenland and Air Iceland.

There are no direct connections from North America to Greenland at this point. However, daily connections from Canada and the US allow for an easy one-connection trip to Greenland.

All five regions in Greenland have at least one international airport with Kangerlussuaq Airport (SFJ) being the biggest transportation hub in Greenland. There are also many domestic airports that connect the other towns and settlements and make it easy to get around in Greenland.

The transit of the Prince Christian Sound is one of the highlights of cruising in Greenland. The approximately 60-mile sound cuts between the mainland and an archipelago of islands from east to west, under the southern edge of the massive Greenland Ice Sheet, which covers 80 percent of the island. The sound is narrow, sometimes as little as 1500 feet across, and numerous glaciers reach the sea on its shores, calving icebergs into the sound. High, barren and sharply defined peaks tower on both sides. The only indications of humanity to be seen are the Ikerassasuaq weather station (using the Greenlandic name for the sound) where the ship enters, and the small village of Aappilattoq, housing approximately 100 people. Animal life is more abundant, with minke, fin and blue whales seen frequently, as well as ringed and bearded seals that haul out on the floating ice. It is a breathtaking display of natural splendor in the severe, rugged vernacular of rock, ice and sea that is unique to the arctic realm.

What is it like Living in Greenland?

Greenland is likely to evoke mental pictures of polar bears, icebergs, the northern lights, and Inuit culture and lifestyle. We think you'll appreciate this northern gem as much as we do. People's perceptions of Greenland are often incorrect, and we hope this video may dispel some of those myths. How about we get going?

Everyday Food.
Greenlanders often eat a lot of canned goods, as well as canned fish, potatoes, and vegetables. Many Inuit tribes also rely heavily on seal and polar bear meat. Incredible dining options can be found all around the western coast of Greenland. While that may be true, it is not well known. Greenlandic delicacies are often reserved for the most discerning of diners (unless you happen to be Inuit), leading many to get a false idea of the cuisine outside of Greenland.

An Infinite Supply of Sunlight
Learn what it's like to have sunshine on your face for all 24 hours of the day. Just picture yourself seeing the sun set (it does not truly set) and then rising again an hour later. Greenland's summers are nonstop celebrations.

What it's like to live in Greenland and learn about its culture and music
The Greenlandic people have always placed a high value on the arts, both historically and now. With such a small population, Greenland is home to a surprisingly robust music culture, with several performers garnering worldwide acclaim.
Greenlandic literature began with the oral transmission of Greenland's rich oral tradition of myths and stories. Many of these have been memorialized in print and are readily available at this time.
While Greenlanders have a long history of performing for one another, it wasn't until 1984 that a professional theater company was founded, and it wasn't until 2011 that the country's first theater school opened.
Greenland is home to a rich history of craftsmanship. Greenlanders traditionally wear colorful woolen knitwear (anoraks) and handcrafted boots (kamiks). Fur and sealskins have been vital to Greenlanders' survival in the north for centuries, but in recent years, Greenlandic design has exploded, reaching new levels of creativity by fusing worldwide and Greenlandic fashions with the inventive use of fur and skin goods.

Fundamental Economic Principles
Standard of living and unemployment in Greenland are on par with those in mainland Europe (officially about 10 percent in the mid-1990s, with the public sector accounting for almost two-thirds of all jobs). While its GDP is more than $1 billion each year, the Danish government provides almost half of its budgetary support. The Greenlandic economy experienced a downturn in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Recent years have had budget surpluses and low inflation, but there is rising concern that overfishing may soon cause severe fisheries depletion. Small, remote Inuit communities in northern and eastern Greenland rely heavily on subsistence hunting for food and clothing (mainly polar bear and seal furs). Some Inuit communities have also profited from the International Whaling Commission's (IWC) recent decision to offer Greenland special authority to participate in limited aboriginal subsistence whaling.

Literature, Music, Art, and All Other Humanities Topics
Help for the Creative Sector. Greenland's artistic and literary communities get some funding from the government since the Greenlandic and Danish governments recognize the value of the arts in attracting tourists. However, the Inuit communities' robust creative history is by far the most important factor in the ongoing survival of Greenlandic arts.
Literature.
Inuit mythologies and moral codes, as well as the connection between the Inuit and the animals (seal, bear, walrus, whale, fox, etc.) on which they depended for existence, have long been central to Greenland's rich oral storytelling heritage (stories and songs). The most accomplished exponents of this art form are still held in high regard in Greenlandic society. While the tradition of writing and reading is still developing in Greenland, it is becoming more and more widespread.

12 Facts about Greenland That You Might Not Know

Greenland is without a doubt the destination in the Arctic that sees the fewest tourists in the summer and is also the one that the least amount of people are familiar with. It is also one of the most fascinating locations in the world. Greenland is enormously enormous and incredibly white, two features that undoubtedly both contribute to the attractiveness and make it more than a bit frightening to plan a visit. If you have ever taken even a cursory look at a global map, you are bound to be aware of these facts. Greenland is an Arctic conservation area comparable to only a few others, both on land and within the oceans that shape it, and it is populated by a historic Inuit culture that has developed to the rhythm of its own drum. However, size and ice aren't the only things that Greenland has going for it; there is so much more to it than that.
Before you start making travel plans to Greenland, you should familiarize yourself with the following really fun facts about Greenland. Take a look:
1. Greenland Really Was Green
Why is Greenland still named Greenland if it is always frozen over? Greenland is a white Arctic country because of all the snow and ice that blankets it. If it's not green, then why is it called Greenland? Well, this surely is one of the most interesting facts about Greenland that you might not know. But don’t worry, the story isn’t that complex. The murderer Erik the Red of Iceland, who was sent there, is responsible for the island's unusual moniker. He chose the name Greenland in the belief that it would encourage immigration. South Greenland (where Erik the Red made his home) is surprisingly lush during the summer months. According to researchers, however, Greenland was a lush greenery over 2.5 million years ago. New research shows that ancient earth was chilled kept for millions of years, buried beneath roughly two miles of ice.

2. World’s Largest Island
Greenland is a huge island, around the area of Western Europe. Remember that it is the world's 12th biggest nation while making plans for your trip. When additional islands in the vicinity are included in, the total land surface of Greenland rises to 2.16 million square kilometers (836,330 sq miles). An arctic ice extends over about 80 percent of whole land area. While the ice-free region is small compared to the rest of the planet, it is nevertheless around the area of Sweden. Among the world's least populous nations, its 56,480 residents make it a rarity in terms of population density.

3. Greenland is an Autonomous country
Another fun fact about Greenland is that in spite of being a part of Denmark, Greenland operates independently as a sovereign nation. Greenland has really been historically and culturally linked to Europe for the better part of a thousand years, despite its North American location. Denmark has had settlements in Greenland as of 1721; in 1953, the nation officially became a part of Denmark. After being awarded Home Rule by Denmark in 1979, Greenland was then inaugurated into extended Self Rule in 2009, providing even more authority and responsibility to the Greenlandic government. Greenland will be able to take up additional duties from Denmark in accordance with the new framework as and when it is ready to do so.

4. Greenland has the lowest population density of almost any country on the planet.
Despite its size, the city is home to barely 56,000 people. That translates to a population density of only 0.03 individuals per square kilometer. There is plenty of space to be alone even in the nation's capital, as the population is not fairly spread out and no one lives in the great majority of the island.

Should you visit GREENLAND & Nuuk - shops, markets and culture

Hello everyone! This is the seventh video in my Iceland & Greenland series.

My adventures in Greenland, my 65th country (well, depending on how you count them), continues.

In this video, I get the chance to explore Nuuk on one of its busiest days of the year - Kids' Day. There are a lot of people out and about and I thought it was an ideal day to explore the cultural side of the capital.

I start my day with a quick bus journey around the city and talk with an interesting bus driver. Afterwards, I frequent a variety of shops, including clothing shops, the big Nuuk shopping mall, the tourist information office and local markets to name a few. I also meet some friendly local people along the way! The day ends with a Colour Run as part of the festivities - yours truly as a spectator only though!

At the end of the vlog, I also give my verdict on whether Nuuk is worth visiting after spending a few days there. I won't ruin the suspense for you, but there is a bit of a twist...

Please hit the like and subscribe buttons, it really helps this channel to grow! Also make sure to check out my other videos!

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
Welcome to Greenland.
We're here on the Greenland Explorer withQuark Expeditions and we're joined by the Expedition Leader, Alex McNeil.

Can you just run us through what maybe 24
hours might be like on the ship here?

An average day for me would probably be waking
up around 5 O'clock, and heading to the bridge

looking at local conditions, ice weather,
current, assessing our progress, towards our

proposed destination and looking for any opportunities
along the way.

And the essentially we have a time where we
plan to wake the passengers up.

Usually anywhere from 5:30 to 7:30 at the
latest, sometimes we give people a little

bit of a sleep in.
Then we go out on a morning excursion for

sure, for example, this morning we had a zodiac
cruise and a landing, the tide just got out,

we had a really good extended hike, and we're
going to assess opportunities.

Ready for a great day on the water!
Ship cruise the entirety of the Fjord, it's

about 60 miles
Picturesque jagged peaks, glaciers, that will

be great regardless, and who knows what opportunities
will present for zodiac cruises and other

adventures.
I forgot one thing, we're gonna get you to

jump in the water at some point too.
Oh,

Because we're back in the ice, and we've got
a little bit colder water, so it's time for

a polar plunge.
I like that, it's a little bit colder water.
We want it to be as cold as possible so people
can get the true feeling of the Polar Plunge.

If you go on a Quark Expedition Ship, make
sure to do the polar plunge, whether it's

in the Antarctic or it's up here in Greenland,
do it!

And Vodka is your reward, mine's empty.
Another fantastic day here in Greenland, as

you can see, the landscape never stops changing.
See ya!

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wow, behind me is Jacobs Harbour, and this

is a harbour filled with ice bergs that come
from Jacobs Glacier.

And as we were told, all of these ice bergs,
eventually make it out of here and travel
all the way to Canada.
Walking in the Tundra in the Arctic.

It's the spirit of adventure,
You never know what's going to happen and

that's what great about the Arctic.
It's just adventure around every corner.

Cheers from Greenland.
So you know if you need any motivation to
go to the Arctic, well you got it now.
Come to Greenland, we'll see you there.

48 Hours in Greenland: Inuits, Icebergs and Insane Hikes

48 Hours in Greenland - Icebergs, Colorful Houses and Fjord Adventures

No, Greenland is not for sale, but it is open for business and well worth the trip!

A real dream for any traveler, Greenland is one of the most remote and mysterious countries on Earth. We got lucky enough to visit it in September and were absolutely stunned by this untouched country and its colorful capital Nuuk.
From the vast beauty of its beautiful landscapes to the joys of fishing your own dinner, through the discovery of ancient settlements and the cutest houses in the world, here’s our full guide to 48 Hours in Greenland.

48 Hours in Greenland | Day 1: Downtown Nuuk, Colorful Houses and Big Malene
With a direct Greenland Air flight to Nuuk from Copenhagen or Reykjavik, the Greenlandic capital is an absolute must-do when visiting Scandinavia and Northern Europe.

After our arrival in Nuuk and check-in in the Hotel Hans Egede, we headed off to discover downtown Nuuk and the beautiful colorful houses we saw so many pictures about.

Since Nuuk is small, we did all of downtown Nuuk on foot, from our hotel.

We started off visiting the Nuuk Cathedral, which is a tribute to the Christian influence on the nation, since the Inuits had different beliefs before Denmark settlements. The Cathedral is built in a similar Lutheran style compared to Icelandic churches - really worth the detour!

Right next to the Cathedral, we could visit the Nuuk National Museum and Cultural Center, which taught us a lot about Greenland, since in true Jeff and Anne fashion, we came without knowing much! Greenland has a long history of settlements, from the first Inuit settlers to the Danish in the last two centuries.

Dated to around 1475 AD, the oldest human remains found in Greenland are from Inuit mummies - we saw them in the museum, and warning, they’re quite chilling.

A little over the Museum you will find the famous Kolonihavn area, with its collection of wooden Inuit traditional houses, with an urban landscape filled with an amazing array of bright colors, from deep yellow to bright orange, from neon green to electric blue. What a view!

In the afternoon we attempted the summit of Big Malene, located in the most popular outdoor region of Nuuk, Quassussuaq.

The 2,493-foot-tall (761 m) Store Malene/Big Malene is a solid hike up to the peak, offering a great view of Nuuk, Akia (Nordlandet), Sermitsiaq and the Kangerluarsunnguaq Fjord with its spectacular glaciers.

All hiking trails are marked, the Big Malene being recognizable with its orange markings on the rocks alongside the trail.

You can take this hike with a guide, which we would recommend, however we attempted it on our own, being last minute as usual.

In dry weather, the ascent is pretty straightforward, albeit fairly difficult, but we attempted it with fog and rain and had to stop half way through due to too many slippery rocks. But we will be back, we said!

Since we couldn’t climb all the way up to Big Malene, we decided to go back and hike Lille Malene/Little Malene, around the same spot and offering impressive views of Nuuk, Akia, the surrounding regions and the spectacular sea.

Following this time the green markings on the rocks, we hiked around the lake for a couple hours, this time in dry weather!

Tip: The water in the streams is clean and drinkable! Bring a mug or bottle to scoop the water up with.

These two hikes are really the best outdoors trails to follow if you don’t have a car around Nuuk - accessible via bus number 1 from downtown Nuuk for 16 krones each (about $2.5), stopping in Qinngorput and heading from there. Our hotel had a hiking map of Nuuk which was also very helpful!

We took 2 boat tours during this trip, both with Nuuk Water Taxi in an open boat, with full life suits (did you see our video?).

The first tour was an amazing fishing and eat-your-own-fish boat tour, bringing us an hour boat ride away outside of Nuuk in Qooqqut Nuan to fish our dinner. We both caught fished in less than a minute in 65-meters deep water (brrr) and were brought to the unique restaurant on the island for them to cook it for us. Can’t beat it! The dinner was delicious, complete with soup, steamed and fried fish and rice, potatoes and vegetables.

Exploring Nuuk, Greenland (Walking Tour in Nuuk, the Capital of Greenland) - Travel vlog

Explore with me Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, as I walk through the streets of Nuuk.

“Nuuk” is the Greenlandic word for “cape” and is named for its position at the mouth of the Nuup Kangerlua Fjord (otherwise known as the Nuuk Fjord) – the second largest fjord system in the world. The Narsap Sermia glacier flows directly into the fjord. Nuuk is the northernmost capital in the world if you don’t include Reykjavik. Nuuk was founded in 1728 by the missionary Hans Egede after he left his first settlement at the nearby ”Island of Hope”. The population is approximately 16800.

As I walk through the streets of Nuuk, you will see Nuuk old harbor, Nuuk Cathedral, Hans Egede statue, Nuuk water taxi station, Nuuk boardwalk, Nuuk center (Nuuk shopping mall), Nuuk Katuaq center (Nuuk cultural center), Nuuk Tupilak Travel office, Muggedalen, and many other beautiful sites.

At the end of the video, you will see a beautiful area known as Muggedalen. It gives a good view of the colorful houses of Nuuk along the seashore.

The Beauty of Greenland in 4K

Sailing through the midnight sun in Greenland, a dream becomes reality. In July I visited Greenland for the first time. With our small sailing boat we discovered the icefjords around Ilulissat and captured amazing photos and videos every night. Grab some warm clothes and enjoy my latest work The Beauty of Greenland. Thanks to Daniel Kordan and Iurie Belegurschi for that great experience while our midsummer photo tour through Western Greenland (
