Bratislava is located in southwestern Slovakia at the foot of the Little Carpathians, occupying both banks of the River Danube and the left bank of the River Morava. This is Bratislava, Slovakia, the arguably most underrated in city Europe. We travelled here from Turkey to explore Slovakia, a former communist country (as part of Czechoslovakia) with influences from both east and west and a rich history from a beautiful corner of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, to former frontline in Cold War. Located only 80 kilometres from Vienna, Austria, Bratislava feels both central and eastern European at the same time and its hard to believe this city was separated completely from its bigger neighbour for over 50 years. Traveling here in 2023, with Slovakia part of the EU and Schengen borderless travel zone feels a world away from that period of time. Welcome to Bratislava, Slovakia

We Didn’t Expect Slovakia To Be THIS Beautiful | Bojnice Castle & Sulov Rocks

Welcome back to Slovakia, today we start our road trip in this beautiful country - leaving the city of Bratislava to explore more of the countryside.

After renting our car, we drove from Bratislava to our first stop - the cute fairy tale town of Bojnice to see the Bojnice castle. After going on a castle tour from the top to down below in the well we went out for lunch.

After lunch we checked into our first night inside a cabin at Koliba Pacho where we chased some sheep and found a jumpy castle.

The next morning we started nice an early to see the cultural town of Cicmany where the unique white markings covered the town buildings.

We then went on a hike to Sulovske skaly mountains, passing by Sulovske castle and having lunch at Orava Castle before ending our day at our hotel for the night.

Slovakia has a long and varied history and contains Europe’s youngest capital city and also its highest mountain range, as well as cultural masterpieces and unspoiled nature. Bratislava is located in the heart of Europe and is the capital of Slovakia. Surrounded by the City Hall and several palaces, it is like being taken back in time into a rich and glorious past. On the Danube’s Slovakian side, and to the east, is the town of Komárno. In the old urban market square a Miniature Europe with forty five buildings has, in recent years, come into existence. Towers, domes, arcades, half-timbered buildings and woodcarvings frame the square at whose centre is the Millennium Fountain. It is a unique mixture of architecture that signifies the common culture of European countries. Seven hundred metres above sea level, herds of sheep graze peacefully on the slopes of the Great Fatra, the location of the almost hidden and forgotten Vlkolĺnec, a unique village in the heart of Slovakia’s Liptov region. Today it is tantamount to being an open-air museum. Further north is Terchová, birthplace of Slovakia’s national hero, Juraj Jánošík. The legendary robber chief has an exhibition dedicated to him in which the living conditions and customs of that time are on display. The High Tatra is the smallest high mountain range in Europe. A magnificent mountain landscape with rocky mountains and many lakes. In 1947, the National Park of the same name was founded. Slovakia is a land of fortresses, castles and cities that date from the Middle Ages and, despite its many mountain regions, a southern-influenced way of life.

Who are we? ????????‍♀️
We're Tom and Iz, a young couple from Cornwall, the UK, who live and travel full time in our van La Bamba. We love nature and try to spend as much time as possible wild swimming, hiking and being outdoors! 10 years ago we had a whirlwind summer romance, then went our separate ways to travel and go to university and fast forward 4 years later, we found ourselves back in the same place at the same time as each other and the rest is history.

Why Van Life? ????
We bought the van back in 2019 whilst Iz was training to be a secondary science teacher. Van Life isn't something I had followed online during my teacher training, but within days of my brothers showing me YouTube videos of people living in vans, I became obsessed. I was really unhappy in my training and very stressed.

Van Life was an escapism for me and it represented freedom. I had some money saved up and my brothers showed me our van La Bamba on gumtree. I forced myself to sleep on it and the next day I asked my dad if he would come with me to Bournemouth to view it. Meanwhile Tom is in Estonia on a stag do for his best friend. We haven't spoken about getting a van before and I know nothing about what makes a van good and no idea on van conversions! But I buy it! I phone Tom to say we now have a van - whoops! We were all so excited. With the help of my brothers and the space on my mum's drive (and lots of YouTube videos) and alongside full time work and uni, we convert her to live in! ????

Two years later and Iz finds work she can do remotely from the van and Tom starts our YouTube channel. ????

Since then we haven't looked back and when the pandemic allowed us to, we travelled to Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and most recently we have completed a road trip from Cornwall to Estonia (via Norway). ????

We traveled to Poprad, Slovakia for one reason, to hike in our first national park outside of the United States! This particular hike came with some perks. The beginning of the hike was a chairlift and then a cable car taking us halfway up the mountain which made our ascent an amazing and not so exhausting experience. After cresting the mountain for spectacular views, our descent ended at a beautiful mountain lake with a chalet. The chalet had incredible food and affordable beer. Nothing could make a hike better.

SLOVAKIA is NOT What You Think. ????????????

BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA is not the most popular travel site in Europe. It's so near to Vienna, but it's oftentimes overlooked in favor of other cities within Eastern and Central Europe.

What's more, is that the Stereotypes of Bratislava as depicted in the 2004 Teen Comedy Eurotrip will have you believing that Bratislava is... well, a total wasteland.

I was determined to find out how much truth, if any, there was in the imagery I saw depicted in that movie.

I took a walking tour in order to dive into some of the history, and had a fantastic guide who really instilled some love for Slovakia into me right away. I also had the opportunity to try a number of different pieces of Slovak cuisine, which was a really delicious experience (especially with all the cheese and potato ????)

I had a great time on my trip to Bratislava, and I hope to get the opportunity to explore even more of Slovakia in the future. It's a place that is absolutely worth visiting, and you should give it a try if you're ever staying in the area!
