The BEST Things to do in OLD SAN JUAN Puerto Rico | 48 Hrs in San Juan

Trade winds caress your face as you stand atop a 15th-century fortress in a UNESCO City staring out across the ocean lapping at the cliff edges as it has for centuries. Visitors pass by but you just reside in the stillness and friendship of the Iguana basking in the sun at your side. You get hungry and decide to head into the Old San Juan center to a restaurant along Fortaleza street. A wild-haired woman ushers you in, as she shoos two pigeon residents out of her restaurant that has been run by her family for years. You sit down and she hands you a local Medalla beer, you sip it, and realize that all your cares about life at home were washed down with that first sip of your cold beverage.

This is what I experienced anyway when I visited Old San Juan in May of 2022. I was there for a travel conference and was so enamored by the sites of Old San Juan and history here, I ended up ditching the conference to really DO what we were there to learn about - exploring and reporting better on cities from around the world.

There is a big difference between San Juan and Old San Juan, you see the difference in centuries collide within a matter of 1-2 minute drive through the city. You see the Spanish influence in the Castillos and fortresses, feel the religious devotion to the grandeur of the Chapel of St John, and learn about the miracle that influenced the Chapel of Christ. Walking along the blue cobblestone streets of San Juan is sure to delight every visitor, but there are a few suggestions and tips to visit that I will explain more in my article (link below) and in my video.

For a written detailed guide with an interactive google map, check out my article here:

OLD SAN JUAN (Spanish: Viejo San Juan) is a historic district located at the northwest triangle of the islet of San Juan in San Juan. Its area roughly correlates to the Ballajá, Catedral, Marina, Mercado, San Cristóbal, and San Francisco sub-barrios (sub-districts) of barrio San Juan Antiguo in the municipality of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Old San Juan is the oldest settlement within Puerto Rico and the historic colonial district of the city of San Juan. This historic district is a National Historic Landmark District and is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places as the Old San Juan Historic District. Several historical buildings and structures, particularly La Fortaleza, the city walls, and El Morro and San Cristóbal castles, have been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list since 1983. Historically the mixed use commercial and residential real estate in the main streets like Cristo Street, Fortaleza Street (north) from Tanca Street to the Governor’s Mansion is the most valuable in the area and it has kept its value and increased steadily through several years despite the past economic turmoils.

???????? SAN JUAN NIGHTLIFE DISTRICT PUERTO RICO 4K TOUR

This is how it goes down in La Placita San Juan, Puerto Rico. La Placita is one of Puerto Rico’s nightlife hotspots, attracting both locals and travelers. This joint was originally set up as a market square for local produce, and if you visit during the day, you’ll find a number of colorful stalls and restaurants. However, when the sun goes down, out come the live music and partygoers.

Welcome to Puerto Rico! Our first of many adventures on the Caribbean island brought us to Old San Juan. The historic district is the most visited place in Puerto Rico, and rightfully so.

The streets of Old San Juan are something from a postcard. Colorful buildings, centuries-old churches, Spanish colonial architecture, and blue cobbled streets. Spanish fortifications overlook the rough Atlantic Ocean and vibrant nightlife spills into the streets from the salsa clubs. Simply, the historic neighborhood is everything you'd want from a culturally iconic destination like Puerto Rico.

Unfortunately, we only had one day to explore Old San Juan, so if you're like us with limited time, I recommend checking out our article on how to spend the best one day in Old San Juan possible:

Walking tour of Old San Juan Puerto Rico at night

Puerto Rico officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the northeastern Caribbean.

In 1917, the U.S. granted citizenship to Puerto Ricans. In 1948, Puerto Ricans were given the right to elect their own governor. As of 2014, Puerto Rico remains a U.S. territory, although a 2012 referendum showed a majority (54% of the electorate) in favor of a change in status, with full statehood the preferred option.

WELCOME to PUERTO RICO - TOUR of OLD SAN JUAN, CASA BACARDI, and EL MORRO - 2019 vlog

Welcome to San Juan Puerto Rico! This Caribbean island is nicknamed the enchanted island for its colorful Old San Juan streets, painted sunsets, historic sights, and vivacious spirit.

In this vlog, we visit Old San Juan and check out historic El Morro built by the Spanish.

Next, we visit the largest rum distillery in the world, Bacardi, located only 15 minutes from Old San Juan. Rum is intertwined with the history of this island, dating back to its pirate heritage. Today, the beverage is refined and used in a variety of popular cocktails such as mojitos, daiquiris, and Cuba Libres. We take the mixology class tour where we learn how to make these drinks, and check out the history of rum. (*Please drink responsibly*)
