Exploring Tortola, British Virgin Islands | Top 3 Places to Visit
Come along with us as we spend the day exploring our 3 favorite places on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Tortola, the entrance to the British Virgin Islands, has gorgeous white-sand beaches, incredible restaurants along the water, and some of the best beach bars in the Caribbean.
The three places we visited were:
- Long Bay
- Smuggler's Cove
- Cane Garden
We had dinner in Road Town at a fantastic Italian restaurant, Capriccio di Mare!

If you are wondering, where on earth is the British Virgin Islands?
East of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean is the British Virgin Islands (BVI), a British overseas territory. The Virgin Islands archipelago includes the islands. Along with more than 50 other smaller islands and cays, the British Virgin Islands comprise the four main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke. The number of inhabited islands is around 15. Tortola, the largest island, measures approximately 12 miles (19 km) in length and 3 miles (5 km) in width. About 22,000 people are living on the islands as a whole. The capital of Tortola is in Road Town.

Our Day In Tortola (Taking the Princess Cruise's Tortola Scenic Island Cruise & Drive Tour).
During our cruise, our first stop was in Tortola, BVI. Here, we went on an excursion called The Scenic Island Cruise and Drive Tour. This was really cool because we got to see Norman Island which is one of the islands reported to have been the inspiration for his Treasure Island as it possesses a Spyglass Hill like the one in the book. We also got to see Dead Chest Island, a barren rock in the British Virgin Islands, which Stevenson found mentioned in Charles Kingsley's At Last: A Christmas in the West Indies, and which he said was the seed for the phrase Dead Man's Chest.
After the boat part of the tour, we got on Open Buses and took a scenic tour of the island.

Transfer to the marina and cruise among the beautiful islands of this unique archipelago. View the southern shoreline of Tortola and the surrounding islands of Salt, Peter, and Norman. Stop at Sopher's Hole and visit the boutiques. Then board an open-sided safari tour bus for a scenic drive along the north shore of Tortola.

Tortola Island Tour
Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands. It features several beaches, including Cane Garden Bay and Smugglers Cove. Road Town is the capital of the BVI, has a harbor with sailing boats and is known as a yachting hub. On the other side of the island had forest, mountains and national park. The top of the mountain offers sweeping views of neighboring islands, Peter Island and Virgin Gorda.
If you can get to the top, the views are spectacular.

Tortola by Land & Sea | Shore Excursion | NCL
Your launch awaits at the nearby marina to take you on an exciting cruise among the beautiful islands of this unique archipelago. in this video we travel from the cruise port to Cane Garden Bay Beach. We check out what snorkeling at the beach is like.
Cane garden Bay is located on the northern side of the island of Tortola. Many people compare it to magens Bay in St. Thomas, but I personally thought it was really different. If you want to see Magens Bay please see my video below.
Note: We were not charged for the loungers but I think that is because we were buying stuff at the bar.

Tortola Canopy Tour and Scenic Drive | Shore Excursion | NCL
Board your private transportation for a journey through Road Town. Drive along Ridge Road with amazing views over the north coast of the island. After a brief photo stop to view the islands of Guana, Great Camanoe and Anegada, you’ll drive westward to the Original Virgin Canopy Tour base camp. After a quick restroom break, the friendly staff will outfit you with your gear. Following a brief orientation and safety talk, you’ll arrive at the take-off point of the tour. The tour has been expertly designed for adventurers of all ages (from 5 to 95) and every stop along the way provides you with an amazing I can't believe I just did that photo opportunity that you will want to share with friends and loved ones.
The tour including the outfitting and safety talk and the 7 traverse and other challenge components, will take approximately 1 to 1 1/4 hours, depending on group size and other factors. One element of the tour includes a 1 1/2 story climb (21 steps) up an inclined ladder – but don’t worry, you are attached all the way. Following the tour you can enjoy some refreshments or snacks (not included in the price), shop for souvenirs or just relax and take in the wonderful view from the patio before you board the bus. Stops will be made for photo opportunities on your drive back to the cruise ship terminal.
