Exploring Finland's Bigger Cities | Helsinki, Tampere, and Turku - Suomenlinna Fortress
The last Finnish video that I made was about the smaller towns and national parks visited during my 3 month stay in Finland such as Kotka, Hamina, Porvoo. But this one is about some of Finland’s better known and larger cities.
Today we’re gonna go thru our Helsinki, Tampere, and Turku travels including some nice nature side-trips to take while in each one.
Helsinki is the most well known city and the capital of Finland.
The city of Tampere was all about views for us. I’d heard nice things about Tampere being one of the most hipster destinations in the world and it sure is, but among that there are some really cool sites. It was a snowy weekend that we arrived, and at first look, Tampere seemed like an industrial city especially by the view of the major river splitting the city. That stream, the Tammerkoski, is really gorgeous, especially at night.
The city of Turku is Pinja’s favorite, so I was excited to see it. We were only there for a day, but it was an eventful one. We started at Turku’s crown jewel and Finland’s most visited museum, the Turku castle.

Äänekoski is a city located in the Central Finland region of Finland. It is situated about 270 kilometers north of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. As of in September 2021, Äänekoski had a population of around 18,000 people.
The town is known for its beautiful natural surroundings, with numerous lakes and forests in the area, which make it a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and boating. Äänekoski is also an important industrial center in Finland, with several large companies operating in the area, including the Finnish forest industry company Metsä Group, which has a significant presence in the town.

Lappeenranta is a vibrant international University City of approximately 72,000 inhabitants and 15,000 students in Southeastern Finland. The second most visited city by foreign tourists, located by Lake Saimaa 220 km from both Helsinki and St. Petersburg, Lappeenranta is the most important meeting point between the EU and Russia. Exploring Finland's Smaller Towns - Kotka, Hamina, Porvoo, Repovesi National Park, Valkmusa Park
As some of you may know I’ve just spent a quarter of a year in the Scandinavian country of Finland for a work assignment. Slow travel is different than what I’m used too but I was really happy to get back to exploring and excited to show you guys about my adventures there.
What started off as 2 - 4 weeks in Finland for work turned into 3 months of exploring and adventure, and of course work also. But with the extended amount of time, I was able to see parts of the country that I definitely wouldn’t have otherwise.
This video is about the smaller cities that were closer to where I lived in Kotka, Hamina, Porvoo, and a few national parks Valkmusa and Repovesi.

Turku, Finland is the former capital of Finland and makes for a great relaxing stop for travelers. The Cathedral and Castle are traditional stops of tourists, but don't forget to grab a sauna and maybe head down to the many bars on the river Aura during the summer. Weekend in Lappeenranta, Finland
This weekend we decided to pack our bags and head out of Helsinki for a country side retreat in Lappeenranta, Finland. Lappeenranta is Located 230km from Helsinki and only 30km from the Russian border.
We stayed at this fantastic small cabin that is very new. Featuring a fireplace, modern appliances and its own sauna, its a great place to escape from city life. It even has a Nespresso coffee machine, so thumbs up from me!

A Dutch story from Tampere, Finland
Hi! My name is Roel Pieters, I'm originally from the Netherlands, and I've been in Finland now for about 2 years.
I work at Tampere University and my field is in Robotics.
I think Finnish nature is very beautiful, and also the very good work-life balance.
What makes me smile about Finnish culture is their relationship with the sauna. This is really great. Finnish people might be a bit silent at first, but once you get them into a sauna, they completely open up.
A nice thing that happened a week ago is that with a couple of Finnish people we went to sauna and then jumped in a frozen lake! That was really nice.
My relationship with Finnish winter is really great. It is very cold, but if you dress well, it is no problem at all. I go skiing all the time, and driving is no problem.
A funny fact that happened to me recently is when I bought my house here in Finland. It's a house in the nature, in the countryside, so suddenly I had to deal with a lot of animals and nature that I was not used to as in Holland. For example, there was a lot of deers and foxes running over my yard and I had to protect my vegetable garden that it wasn't eaten throughout the summer.
The work-life balance in Finland is very well separated. People understand that to have a successful life, you need to have both a good work life and a good private life. Dutch people are very open and very direct, so when I came here and tried to act the same way, it doesn't necessarily always work, and the way of how Finnish people treat each other is probably even nicer.
What I really like about Tampere now in winter is that it's connected to two very big lakes. These lakes are completely frozen in winter, so you can go skating and skiing on the top of the lake, and per Finnish tradition they have, in the middle of the lake, put a little tent where you can buy some Finnish sausages. Very nice.
