Best Beaches in Albania - ???????? [Drone Footage] 4K

The Albanian Ionian Sea Coast is a coastline of the Northeastern Ionian Sea, that encompasses the southwestern border of the Republic of Albania, stretching from the southern half of Karaburun Peninsula, across the historical region of Labëria, the city of Sarandë, the mountains of the Ceraunians and the Albanian Riviera, to the Lake of Butrint, where the Strait of Corfu separates the country from Greece.

Albania is located in Southern and Southeastern Europe in the western section of the Balkan Peninsula. It borders on Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, North Macedonia to the east, Greece to the south and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. The coastline occupies a total length of 172 kilometres (107 mi) and explicitly marked by a mountainous landscape supplied with deep bays, numerous islands, high cliffs, rocky and sandy coasts and a unique marine life.

The Ionian Sea is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea positioned south of the Adriatic Sea, which extend from Sicily up to the Strait of Otranto between Salento and Bay of Vlorë. It is surrounded by Italy in the west, Greece and Albania in the east. Though considered by ancient authors to be part of the Adriatic Sea, the Ionian Sea is at present seen as a separate body of water.

Traditionally, the region represents the most valuable tourist resource for the country, especially due to the unspoilt natural and cultural beauty expressed in the region's architecture, cuisine and tradition. Its most considerable attraction is the ancient city of Butrint, that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because it provides valuable remains of ancient civilizations.

The region is populated by more than 50.000 people with the largest city being the seaport city of Sarandë, one of the most appreciated tourist destinations in the Ionian Sea. Sarandë is served by Port of Sarandë, one of the largest of the country, which has become a notable sailing and cruise port. The region is very scenic, with wild coastlines, mountains and a very substantial proportion of native forest. Some of the most prominent beaches along the coastline are Dhërmi, Himara, Qeparo, Borsh, Lukovë, Vuno and Ksamil.

The Albanian Ionian Sea Coast is known for its diverse landscapes, unique traditions, and its influence on Albanian culture. It is regarded as the birthplace of the Albanian iso-polyphony which was recognised as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Albanian Riviera - Best Holiday Destination in Albania?

Albanian Riviera stretches roughly between Vlore and Sarande in the south-west Albania. This is one of the most beautiful coasts in the whole Ionian Sea and probably on of the best in Europe. The coast is still not very built up, which is mainly thanks to country's previous communism rule which resulted in poverty and isolation.

This feature alone can make it a perfect vacation destination for those who like to experience a little bit of something unfamiliar in this part of Europe. Despite of being really laid back the Albanian Riviera has still a lot to provide for different type of holidaymaker. For example those interested in archaeology will find the visit to ancient city of Butrint really rewarding. The site richly deserves its status as the country's best known archaeological site, but there are many other interesting ancient remains.

Those who love spending their time outdoors should be pleased in any part of the Riviera. Apart from obvious water related activities, the mountains of Riviera also offer fantastic hiking or cycling opportunities for those with more time at their disposal.

Vlore is the biggest city in the Albanian Riviera and it lies in strategical location where the Adriatic and Ionian seas separate. As you'd anticipate the city has Mediterranean look to it, as the streets are filled with palm trees and the access to beach is virtually from the main street. Vlore's geographical position - almost exactly in the middle between capital Tirane and Sarande, and 3 hours by ferry from nearest port of Brindisi in Italy, makes it a advantageous gate point into Albania.

Sarande, on the other hand is probably the most attractive entry point into the country. Sarande is unmistakably visible over its pretty horseshoe bay not long after the hydrofoil or ferry leaves Greek island of Corfu.

The climate in Albanian Riviera is excellent, with typically hot and dry summers and modest and often rainy winters. Some places in parts are averaging around 290 sunny days a year with pleasantly warm temperatures, which rarely and usually only during summer months are exceeding 30 degrees C.

Vlore and Sarande are connected by newly upgraded and well surfaced main road. The route in places is however really steep and narrow (in particular throughout the Llagoraja Pass) and this makes the whole travel at least 4 or 5 hours long. The road goes through marvellous scenery, with dramatic mountains rising up from the coast and the deep blue sea shimmering in the sunlight.

The coastline here is very rugged, with stony coves along the tight coastal strip and steep mountains rising almost straight up along most of its length.

The sea along the coast has clear blue water and it is excellent for swimmers as it is warm enough to swim comfortably from May to October. Non-swimmers should note that land slopes very sharply into the sea, unlike gentle Adriatic coast further north.

The many beaches on the coast are normally made of small pebbles, but there are also some sandy ones, mainly in the south. Beaches in Dhermi, Himara and Ksamili are the best known in the Riviera, but there are also lots of others, however unknown to most tourists as they are likely less accessible.

Top Albania

The Albanian Riviera is blessed with 300 days of sun.
The average temperature in January is 10 degrees C. and the average temperature in July is 25 degrees C.
The Ionian coastline is known for having fascinating beaches with deep and very clean waters. Younger crowds tend to visit the Ionian beaches as the area offers many opportunities for those interested in water sports like diving, boat tours, etc.
Some of the most exotic and interesting beaches in the south of Albania are Dhërmi, Jal, Himara, Qeparo, Borsh, Saranda and Ksamil.
From the Llogara Pass, which is 1,057 meters above sea level, the breathtaking coast can be seen as if from the vantage point of an airplane.
The first beach here is Dhraleos in Palasë which has a length of 1.5 km. This is one of the most exotic and tranquil beaches of the Albanian coastal zone complete with rich blue waters. This beach is popular for water sports and is sometimes even the destination for the parachutes that launch from Llogara Pass.
Dhërmi is located a little further south and is one of the most frequented and important tourist places along the Albanian coast. The crystal-clear waters, isolated beaches, water sports and diving make this the preferred beach of younger generation. The different beaches that are part of Dhërmi are Jaliksari, Shkambo and Gjipea. The beach of Gjipea has a beautiful shape. Past this beach there is a stream that has made a canyon with 70 meters high walls. Located near the beach of Dhërmi is the Cave of Pirates which tourists can access only by boat or ferry. There are also hotels, restaurants and summer clubs located nearby.

Throughout this entire area, family tourism has developed, where tourists can choose to rent guesthouses or reside in a variety of hotels nearby. Near Himara 8 km south of Dhërmi, you will find the village of Vuno, which is the central area of the Albanian Riviera. It is a tourist town that comes to life during the summer season thanks to the younger generations that come here.
In this area are beaches of Spile, Potam, Llamaniand and Livadhja. All of them stand out for their deep waters, navigability and rocky characteristics. After Borsh is Qeparo and the small tectonic gulf of Porto Palermo where Ali Pasha castle is located.
Borsh, is one of the longer beach areas of the Albanian Riviera protected by a collection of massive Mediterranean vegetation, primarily citrus and olive plantations. Family tourism has also become very popular in this area. Between here and the city of Saranda, one can find the beaches of Bunec, Kakome and Krokëy whose collective length runs about three km and each with beautiful, crystal-clear water.
The city of Saranda is the most populous urban area on the Albanian Riviera and a very big tourist destination, especially enjoyed by newly married couples on their honeymoon. The city and surrounding areas offer a range of hotels catering to five-star travelers as well as the more budget conscious, while home rentals also remain an option. The city is well-located on the coast only 9 km away from the Greek island of Corfu. Daily ferries offer connections between Saranda and Corfu making this southern Albanian city a good base for European and international tourists.
Along Saranda you will find some smaller beaches like Central and Liman. Usually, tourists prefer to visit one of the more frequented places, Ksamil, which is located between the peninsula of Ksamil and lagoon of Butrint hosting a number of hotels and restaurants, near the beach of Ksamil are 4 small islands covered by Mediterranean vegetation with a surface of 8.9 ha.

Dhërmi & Drimadhë, Beautiful Beaches in Albanian Riviera

Visit Albania

Dhërmi Beach
Dhërmi is famous for its crystal-clear waters and small, intimate pebble beaches, such as Jaliksari, Shkambo, and Gjipea. Situated at the foot of a 70 m cliff, Gjipea is a rare wonder. Close to Dhërmi is the legendary Cavern of the Pirates. Dhërmi is a picturesque village thought to have first been inhabited in 49-48 BC. The village is home to the Monastery of Shën Maria, the Church of Shën Todhri, the Church of the Ipapandia and the Church of Shën Mitri, with frescos dating from the 12th-14th centuries. The main leisure activities in Dhërmi are swimming, water sports, and diving. There are many hotels, restaurants, bars, and discotheques. The restaurants combine traditional and foreign cuisines, and serve many seafood specialties.(Source:Albania.al)

Drymades Beach
Hidden behind a mountain range, the main beach of Drymades is actually stony, but turn left and walk for 10 minutes and you’ll find completely empty white sand beaches. The sea is unbelievably clear, and it’s a nice tepid temperature. A nearby orange orchard adjacent is home to the Sea Turtle campsite which has pre-pitched tents, with foam mattresses and clean bedding. There is a kitchen bar, a shop selling fresh food and essentials and a sandwich van visits the beach daily.(Source:theguardian.com)
