The Cotswolds is an area in south-central, West Midlands and South West England encompassing the Cotswold Hills, a range of rolling hills that rise from the meadows of the upper Thames to the Cotswold Edge, above the Severn Valley and Evesham Vale.
The area is defined by the bedrock of Jurassic limestone that creates a type of grassland habitat rare in the UK and that is quarried for the golden-coloured Cotswold stone.
With quintessentially English villages, lively market towns, some of the country’s greatest palaces, castles and country houses and breath-taking landscapes, the Cotswolds is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Movies have been shot in these villages. Writers have written about these small beautiful settlements and have made them their locations. Photographers and artists have glassed and glazed their shots and paintings of them. We also are inspired by these hidden jewels in the cozy part of England and we love to make it contagious. Is it the dramatic cliffs, honey-colored cottages, undulating countryside, beautiful beaches, meandering rivers, azure waters, imposing fells, thatched roofs, or the cobblestone streets? You don’t have to live in the city to enjoy living in England; just consider these 12 most picturesque villages in England.
12. Grasmere, Cumbria
We told you that these lovely small towns in England have inspired poets and other literary artists. Yes, we meant it. William and Dorothy Wordsworth, the Lake Poets, spent their years, 14 good years, in Grasmere, writing those most influential poems. In fact, these romantic poets described the village as “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found.” This small village in Cumbria in the district of South Lakeland in the North West region is charming enough to be a tourist destination. For centuries and till now, it has continued to attract visitors from everywhere. If you have heard of the world-famous Grasmere Gingerbread shop, you would have a reason to visit or spend some time in the village. It is one of the finest gems in the Lake District.
11. Castleton, Derbyshire
If you find that more comfortable, you can refer to this one of the most picture-perfect villages in England as the home of Mam Tor, a.k.a. Shivering Mountain. Castleton in Hope Valley, in the Peak District, is located in Derbyshire, about half an hour from Sheffield by train. This charming and charismatic village has long been a hotspot for history buffs, and outdoor lovers, including hikers and seasoned trekkers. It is enveloped by the most beautiful countryside in England including the lovely view of the Peak District and Mam Tor which is just two hours from the village center. The ruins of Peveril Castle from the 1200s, one of England's earliest Norman fortresses, is also overlooking this pleasantly unusual village.
10. Beaulieu, Hampshire
Beaulieu, a small village on the southeastern edge of the New Forest national park located in Hampshire is one of England’s top family days out where you would have a lot of choicest locations to prove your photogenicity. At the same time, the location will make historical accounts come alive even though New Forest seems to have kept the village somewhat isolated from the rest of the modern world. The rambling walks, wild horses, and beautiful woodland are just a few of the delights of this area. What are the most beautiful towns in the United Kingdom? Just one visit to the UK can never be satisfying. Brits have a lot of great illustrious and epic places to visit. The country is full of beautiful, breathtaking, and magical locations. The challenge is where to find those locations. You will realize that the country is dotted with the most beautiful towns. Once your gaze is fixed on those places, you wouldn’t want to spend just an hour in big-hitting and popular places like London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and even York before you head straight to attractive towns nestle in the nooks and crannies of the country. To help you identify some of these, we present in this video, the 12 most beautiful towns in the UK to visit.
12. Bangor, Northern Ireland
We will take you first to Northern Ireland, the region of the UK least often regarded. And we’re looking at the town of Bangor. We have to quickly tell you that this is the only town in Northern Ireland on this list and it’s in County Down.
This is a scenic seaside town that, kind of, puts the rest of Northern Ireland to shame with its extraordinary beauty as we discovered. The town whose name means “horned curve,” likely taken after the shape of Bangor Bay, had become a famous seaside resort during the 19th century for Victorian holidaymakers. Adding to the beauty of this town are many of its ancient architecture.
11. Painswick, England
It’s now the turn of Painswick, a town in the Stroud District in Gloucestershire. We reckon with Painswick as the loveliest village in Cotswolds. But prettiness doesn’t end there; it’s rated high among the prettiest towns in the UK. This town established itself during the historic wool trade boom. It’s now known as the Queen of the Cotswolds because of its heritage architecture and unique landscapes. The town, with its stone buildings and magical topiary trees, is packed with beauty as one of the most picturesque towns in the UK. Visitors admire the streets of Cotswold Stone houses and cottages. The stunning Rococo Garden opening in warmer months makes that season memorable.
10. Sandwich, England
The next is Sandwich, a historic town in the Dover District of Kent in southeast England. The civil parish lies on the River Stour. Its many original medieval buildings and several public houses listed in the old town walls, almshouses, and the White Mill are among the beautifiers of this town. The attractive town which was a major port is now more than 3 kilometers from the sea no thanks to the disappearance of the Wantsum Channel. Still, its historic center has been preserved. Those visiting this rustic, and romantic town described as the completest of the medieval towns in Britain are bound to see a lot of historic sites and attractions.
9. Cirencester, England
Cirencester, a market town in Gloucestershire, is known as the capital of Cotswolds. This town is also steeped in fascinating history. Lying on the River Churn, it is on the tributary of the River Thames. As the largest town in Cotswolds, it has to its west Cirencester Park. It is the seat of Earl Bathurst and also the site of one of the country’s finest landscape gardens, laid out by Allen Bathurst, First Earl Bathurst after 1714. There are also Abbey House, Roman Amphitheater, and other ancient yet beautiful locations.

This is the first and only Scottish town on this list of the 12 most beautiful towns in the UK. Nestled in rolling hills surrounded by waterfalls, Portree has many quaint colorful cottages. There are plenty of places to wine and dine in this largest town on the Isle of Skye, which doubles as its capital, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The harbor is open for business in this Scottish gem. If you’re planning a visit, this is an area to have a bigger exploration of Skye. Among the places tourists consider to count this island worthy of their visits are the Old Man of Storr, the impressive beauty of Quaraing, and Kilt Rock.

Devon is a county in southwest England. It encompasses sandy beaches, fossil cliffs, medieval towns and moorland national parks
The English Riviera is a series of picturesque, south-coast harbour towns and villages including Woolacombe, Mortehoe and Clovelly.
The South West Coast Path follows the coastline, taking in the towering cliffs of the northern Exmoor Coast and rock formations on the fossil-rich southern Jurassic Coast.
With so many beautiful villages and seaside resorts, this list was definitely not an easy one to put together!

Suffolk is a stunning county of England in East Anglia. It borders Norfolk to the north, Cambridgeshire to the west and Essex to the south. The North Sea lies to the east.
The county is low-lying but it has quite a few hills and largely arable land with the wetlands of the Broads in the north. The Suffolk Coast and Heaths are known as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Villages and towns in Suffolk are renowned for their historic pink-washed halls and cottages, which are widely known as ‘Suffolk Pink’. Decorative paint colours found in the county can range from a pale shell shade, to a deep blush brick colour.

We visited the Chatsworth Estate in the Peak District in England where you find very quaint villages with chocolate box cottages and stunning houses. It's what you would see on a picture postcard only that it's real. We also show you a real fairytale cottage set in the stunning English countryside. But we will tell you more about it in the video.
