Tonga Introduction and Overview: history, economics, agriculture, culture

From the Global Village Travel Guide and DVD, Islands of the South Pacific. Stock footage available from
Transcript:
Around 1000 B.C., when the Fijian islands could
no longer support their growing populations the
people looked eastward to what is today the Kingdom
of Tonga.
The limestone islands they found weren't as
diverse, nor as fertile as the volcanic ones they'd left,
so they brought with them the
domesticated animals and the food plants
they would need.
The Kingdom of Tonga is comprised of a number
of island groups. The two most important are the
Tongatapu group in the south and the Vava'u group in the north.
Between them lies the Ha'apai group.

There are 170 islands in all, of which 40 are inhabited.
The southern group is dominated by the island of Tongatapu which
means sacred Tonga and is home to the king.
The earliest inhabitants of these island established
a hereditary monarchy. Over the years, the kingdom
splintered and royal bloodlines multiplied, until,
In 1845, the reins of power were once again gathered
in the hands of one. In 1875, King George Tupou the 1st
approved a constitution, and since that time, the country has had a
constitutional monarchy.
The pace of life is slow and easy in Nukalofa, the capital and only
large town in all of Tonga. The streets and the market place
reflect the quality of life of the Tongan people.
Fresh, healthy food, a diet based on fish and a low stress level
that results from close family ties, have all contributed to one of the
longest life spans on the globe.
Primary education has been mandatory since 1927 and
King Tupou the 4th, the current monarch, was the first
Tongan ever to graduate from college.
Although the Tongan economy receives outside help from
Britain and other countries, the land is fertile and most men
own land to grow the family's staples such as taro root, many
varieties of banana, yams, cassava root, various fruits -- and of course..
coconuts.

South Pacific Migration History

From the ‪ Global Village Travel Guide
DVD's ‪
South Pacific
Stock footage: ‪
Transcript:
Volcanic action and the shifting of
the earth's crust thrust these islands
up from the depths.
Wind and water combined to create soil
that would sustain vegetation.
Over millennia, plants found their way from
Asia, Indonesia and Australia. The islands
grew green and soon played host to abundant animal life.
Species by species, the varieties of
plant and animal life increased and
the web of life became more complex.
The next great wave of migration would
be human. About five thousand years ago population
pressures drove these future Polynesians
from their Asian homes.
First they moved through the Fijian Islands
Then eastward to Samoa and Tonga.
From there, they swept through
Tahiti and French Polynesia extending their domain as far as
the Marquesas
Around 2,000 years ago these intrepid sailors
navigated north to the Hawaiian Islands, south to
Easter Island, and even on to New Zealand to complete
the remarkable feat of populating the islands of the Pacific.
Much later, the voyages of Magellan,
Cook, Darwin, and others would seed
Europe with stories of a paradise in the South
pacific where friendly natives lived carefree
under tropical skies.
Such tales gave the islands the reputation they still enjoy today.......

Kingdom of Tonga documentary in Vava'u in the 90's

Documentary brief on the Kingdom of Tonga, its culture, tradition, food and beliefs.

TUKU FONUA

In the early 1800's the first king of a united Tonga, King Siaosi Tupou I, celebrated the giving of Tonga to God in the northern Tongan islands of Vava'u at a place forever known as Pouono. This film chronicles the event and its significance as described by several renowned scholars of ancient Tongan and Polynesian history. It is a story of great devotion and faith in the face of European colonisation in the Pacific. Presented by Dr Eric B. Shumway and produced by myself with Dr. Vernice Wineera, this program will open your eyes to the unique culture and customs of Tonga as they relate to this pivotal event of 200 years ago.

History of The Marquesas

From the Global Village Travel Guide and DVD, Islands of the South Pacific. Stock footage available from
Transcript:
The Marquesas receive few visitors.
Large airplanes can't land here and there are no hotels.
Though the early inhabitants were a warrior
culture practicing cannibalism,
Captain Cook found these islands hospitable
when he visited during his second voyage in 1774.
In 1842, when the French annexed the Marquesas
the population was estimated to have
been 60,000. By 1926 the ravages of European
diseases, tribal warfare, and a collapsing culture
had reduced the population to less than 2,500 people!
Although the population has now
grown to about 7,000 again, there is an eerie sense
on these islands that a vanished people
still haunt their former homes.
These geologically young islands have no reef and
no surrounding flatlands. Each island is sharpl y divided
by steep ridges,
formidable barriers to travel and communication.
Nuku Hiva, the largest island in the group,
has a population of 2, 400.

HIKO - The Tongan Culture of Women Jugglers

A multi-generational film of a unique, vanishing culture of Polynesian women jugglers in The Kingdom of Tonga. Their unique style and approach is only in this tiny country of 150 islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Enjoy empowering insight into the late Queen Salote, the only Queen of Tonga. She influenced the women and the Cultural Dance such as Hiko and became friends with Queen Elizabeth as she put Tonga on the map in 1953 at the British Coronation.

Hiko is life. Hiko gives happiness. Hiko inspires all women and girls, and no Tongan men juggle. These beautiful women can truly call it their own.

This film was made to
Keep Hiko Alive!

History of French Polynesia

From the Global Village Travel Guide and DVD, Islands of the South Pacific. Stock footage available from
Transcript:
Up until recent times, all of Tahiti's' guests have arrived by sea ,
and the Kay , here along the Boulevard Pomare,
is the heart of the city.
These modern adventurers follow in a time-honored tradition.
Tahiti has been known as a mecca for world cruising voyagers,
ever since the first explorers arrived.
France is only the latest of nations
to drop anchor in Tahitian waters.
Captain Cook made three voyages here
in 1769, 1773 and 1777. Not only did Cook
give the European world the first complete
map of the entire Pacific, but his journals and the
records of his ship's historian and artist, brought straight-forward
accounts of the cultures of Tahiti and The Society Islands to
the attention of the rest of the world.
It was Captain Cook who established Papeete
as the cultural and political center of the islands.
Before the Europeans, the islanders lived in territories divided by
river valleys and mountains.
Cook wrongly concluded that the then chief
of Papeete was the chief of all Tahiti and gave him tools made of iron,
which the islanders had never seen.
With these, the chief made war canoes so quickly that by
the turn of the century he became, in fact,
the chief of the whole island, having defeated all his rivals.
In the 1820s, Queen Pomare expanded the village
to trade with whalers, Navy ships and merchants
and it was a thriving center when France annexed it j
as a protectorate in 1842...........

Tonga Yachting Guide - What to do When Traveling to Tonga ????️

Recently, Tonga Kingdom has transformed into a center of attraction for tourists on a transpacific yacht cruise. The islands are a must-see on a sailing trip, with Vava'u maze of inlets, Ha'apai uncharted islands, and The Niuas and Eua isolated islands.

The coral atoll of Tongatapu serves as the principal island in this endearing archipelago. The Ha'apai island group offers a wide range of activities to accommodate every visitor, including horseback riding, snorkeling, and hiking. The Vava'u group, known as Tonga's adventure capital, is a top sailing location and the location of the stunning Port of Refuge Harbour.

Beware of THIS in New Zealand!

Did you expect this in New Zealand? When you come to New Zealand, you'll be shocked to see gangs. Gangs in New Zealand are so unafraid of the Police that they ride obnoxiously loud motorcycles so you can hear them a mile away.

They even wear a uniform which includes a gang patch, so you know which gang they're from.

This is how open and obvious organised crime is in New Zealand. And for visitors like my wife, it's shocking.

If you stay away from them, they won't bug ya. But the reality is gangs are known for the drug trade, murder, theft, violence against women, and the list goes on.

There are numerous gangs in New Zealand, of varying criminality, organisation and ethnicity, including outlaw motorcycle gangs, street gangs and ethnically based gangs. A chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle club was formed in Auckland in 1961, the first Hells Angels chapter outside the US.

Soon after, the Mongrel Mob formed in Hastings and Wellington, developing into a predominantly Māori and Pacific Islander gang and having the largest membership in the country.

Through the 1960s and 1970s, other outlaw motorcycle clubs and ethnically based gangs formed, including another predominantly Māori gang, Black Power (not related to the African-American movement), which grew to rival the Mongrel Mob. from Wikipedia.
