TOKYO Japan's 5 Busiest Tourist Traps to WATCH OUT for

These are the busiest streets in Tokyo also known as Tourist Traps in Tokyo. We take a camera walking tour of Tokyo's busiest streets and I show you some local tip and tricks on how to beat the crowds while also showing you how busy Tokyo Tourists Traps can actually get. Now if you like walking around, in Tokyo's busiest streets, then by all means visit during the crowded times with all the tourists, but if you want to avoid being packed in like sardines on the street then definitely this video will have some useful tips for you. Tsukiji Fish Markets is probably the number one destination for most Japan Travelers as it is an amazing place to catch Japanese culture and Japanese street food, but you really need to be careful as it does get a bit busy on Saturdays as you can see from this video. This is also similar to Ameya Yokocho or in short Ameyoko. Ameyoko though is especially busy on weekend afternoons. Asakusa is the number one tourist trap in all of Tokyo and even on the winter it is crazy busy. I suggest visiting Asakusa at night to get a peaceful look at this magical area. Harajuku is a young persons destination with some tasty sweets, but watch out for the school kid rush. Finally, Shin Okubo also known as Tokyo's Korea Town is an amazing street food destination but it sometimes gets so busy that the train station exits close. Definitely be careful with this tourist trap location. The weekends are the most crowded times but weekdays can also be a mess, but hopefully it help you navigate through the busy streets of Tokyo.

Transcript:

You're joining me in a very special city. Let’s start with my preconceptions: I expected Japan’s capital, and home to the world’s largest urban population to be over the top and really in your face, with neon lights and anime at every turn and i certainly wasn’t disappointed. The streets are lined with towering, multi-storey buildings, each filled with mind bending department stores and arcades, offices to some of the world’s biggest brands and restaurants serving the best food you’ll ever taste.

But despite all the apparent madness and chaos, spend a few days in Tokyo and it just makes sense. Here, efficiency is an art form. Japanese attention to detail is legendary, and it runs through everything, from food to public transport and urban planning. And yes, even the toilets.

This trip was an educational and weirdly enlightening experience. I’ve been lucky to visit a lot of amazing places making these videos, but Tokyo is in a league of its own.

So Tokyo, it’s big, it’s busy and it’s brilliant. As ever, let’s start with the airports.

Flying from the UK you’ll come into one of Tokyo’s two major international airports, Haneda or Narita. Of course, you don’t need me to tell you that Tokyo is a really long way away, direct flights from Europe will take a whopping 12 hours for the nine and a half thousand kilometre journey.

So you’ve got Haneda airport which is roughly 13 miles south of the city, and then you’ve got 50 miles east. Fortunately, both are really easy to get to noisy noisy Tokyo. Here’s what you need to know.

From Haneda you have three main options, the airport limousine bus, a taxi or the monorail. The airport limousine takes between 30 and 45 minutes, stopping at most major hotels in the centre of town, with prices increasing for the night service between midnight and 5am.

A taxi should take about half and hour depending on traffic, with prices depending where you’re being dropped off. There’s also a 20% extra charge between 10pm and 5am.

However the quickest option is the airport’s dedicated monorail. It’ll get you into Hamamatsucho station in 13 minutes and from here you can connect to the circular Yamanote metro line to reach other parts of the city.

The metro runs between 9 and 7 on weekdays and then 9 to 5 on weekends and public holidays. That’s Haneda! Here’s what you need to know about Narita.

Narita is a whopping 50 miles east of Tokyo, so all of your transport options are going to take a while. The Airport Limousine bus and taxis runs from Narita but both will take anywhere between 90 minutes to 2 hours to reach central Tokyo. Instead, take the JR Narita Express. It’ll whisk into town in a little under an hour, and with this being Japan, the trains are on time and super efficient.

A word of warning about getting home; if you’re flight’s on a Sunday, make sure you check the train times because there’s a reduced service. Check your departure time, and then allow plenty of extra time to get to the airport.

5 Sneaky Tourist Scams in Tokyo Japan

While Tokyo is often regarded as one of the safest big cities in the world, it still has scams that target tourists. Most of these scams revolve around bars and alcohol; which usually makes people part with their money much easier. These scams are real and happen to real people. This was recorded in February 2020, and it was originally planned for release during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Prior to the 2020 Olympics the Tokyo police actually put up posters warning tourists of these scams. The signs read:
“Attention: Your plastic money is being targeted by card criminals”
“Beware of over street solicitations!!”
“Drink Spiking Cases on the Rise!”
Are your valuables (Plastics, cash, etc) Safe?

FAQ
================================

Q: How long was the trip?
A: Around 18 days. But I would say it's doable in 2 weeks. If you want more time to explore then 3 weeks should be more than adequate.

Q: How many days do I need in each city?
A: I would say 3-5 days in Kyoto and Osaka. Nara 1-2 days. At least 4-6 days in Tokyo but the more the better.

Q: How much did it cost?
A: Excluding hotels + airplane tickets we had a budget of around 2000 USD

Q: Is there vegan restaurant options in Japan?
A: Yes, I found plenty, and most restaurants offer vegan-friendly meals

Q: Which month did you go?
A: We visited in July but I would recommend visiting in either the Autumn or Spring season

Q: Where did you stay overnight?
A: You can find links to the different accommodations above + alternatives.

3 Tourist TRAPS to AVOID in Japan!

AD - Don't fall for these tourist traps in Japan! Themed cafes may look cool on social media but they're expensive and the food is often disappointing. The bamboo forest in Kyoto is super crowded and doesn't always match up to the beautiful photos you've seen online. Takeshita Dori is no longer the funky fashion hotspot it used to be, and you'll have to deal with huge crowds. Plus, be wary of dodgy shops and touts trying to rip you off. But don't worry, Japan is still one of the safest places to visit with fewer tourist traps compared to other countries. Check Skyscanner for cheap flights and come explore this amazing country!
