I arrived there on the day of a solar eclipse. Outside of the rare Australian who got on the wrong flight to Bali, tourists don't come here. In fact, it's hard to even take out money. This was gonna be a weekend of adventure, and I had no idea what to expect. Enjoy the ride.

What do you know about East Timor ( or Timor Leste as it is known over there)?
It is the newest country in the Southeast Asian bloc, gaining independence in 2002, and one of the least traveled country in Asia with only 60,000 travelers last year. To put that into perspective, Indonesia, its close neighbor had over 1.32 million arrivals last year.
Due to these facts, I decided to embark on a journey into this unknown land and traveled around the country for 10 days in July 2018. I got to see untouched nature unlike anything I have seen before, one of the smiliest people out there, and best of all, a country untouched by over-tourism. During my trip, I also saw poverty, unmaintained infrastructure, and a fire incident in the city. The trip was one hell of a rollercoaster ride that pushes me to the limit, to say the least. There is a long way to go for Timor Leste to become a prominent destination for travelers, but there is also an untapped potential that awaits those who seek real adventurers. If you are looking for a real adventure, you will surely find it here.

A Tourist's Guide to Dili, East Timor/Timor Leste
How to spend 24-hours in Dili, capital of one of the newest countries in the world.
After a short hop aboard Nam Air from Bali, I land in sleepy Dili. The Hotel Timor is a good base to explore the city on foot, where I see the Presidential Palace, the Santa Cruz Massacre Memorial, the port area and a church. I see lots of great statues along the way, too.
Then I catch a taxi to the Christ monument, and make it to the top to admire the view. After a brief stop by Dili Lighthouse, I end my day in Timor Plaza, where I enjoy a cooling beer in a rooftop restaurant.

#timorleste has seen a rapid roll-out of government #electrification in recent years, with generation largely provided by unsustainable fossil fuel power stations. But this increased electricity access has not produced major improvements in the agriculture-based livelihoods of people in rural areas, with the country still ranking very low on the Human Development Index.
The students explored this fascinating trilemma playing out in one of Australia’s closest neighbours by discussing the energy and sustainability situation in Timor-Leste with government representatives and NGOs, visiting local villages and much more.

ECO-PARADISE of Timor-Leste: Atauro Island exploration by a boat trip from Dili
I spent 28 hours in Atauro Island and explored this pristine eco paradise at its fullest. A 1.5-hour speed boat took me there from Dili at 7:30 AM and I came back the next day at 11:30 AM. This is how you could explore this hidden gem of Timor-Leste with the most biodiverse reefs in the world within such short period of time.

Timor-Leste, or East Timor, a Southeast Asian nation occupying half the island of Timor, is ringed by coral reefs teeming with marine life. Landmarks in the capital, Dili, speak to the country's struggles for independence from Portugal in 1975 and then Indonesia in 2002. The iconic 27m-tall Cristo Rei de Dili statue sits on a hilltop high over the city, with sweeping views of the surrounding bay.Timor-Leste culture is strong, unique and reflects many different influences: traditional animist beliefs; a former Portuguese colony; the impact of WWII; the more recent Indonesian invasion and spirited Timorese resistance; the role of the Catholic Church and the effects of other minority groups such as Chinese ...Dili, also spelled Dilly or Dilli, city and capital of East Timor. When you first land in Dili, you can get a visa on arrival for $30
Except if you’re an EU, Indonesian, Cape Verde citizen
They use the USA ???????? dollar
And the centavo coins which is 1:1 with USA ???????? coin. One would think that using USA ???????? dollar in developing country is cheaper but it’s actually MORE expensive than Indonesia ????????
Driving car ???? not recommended if you’re from USA ???????? or left handed. T mobile connection not the best here your GPS will make you go in circles until you get to Timor plaza for entertainment.
The buses ???? are lot cheaper if you speak Portuguese/ Indonesian but if you only speak English there's a chance they could take advantage of you.

The blue whale southern migration season is approaching and is a highly anticipated event for many of us in Timor-Leste. Despite being one of the yearly highlights for many of us residing here, the whale tourism potential of this country only started gaining traction and international attention over the past recent years.
With more demand for whale watching and whale encounter tours, comes more responsibility to operate in a safe and sustainable manner. This is not only for the people participating in the tours but just as importantly for the safety of and respect for the whales themselves, as irresponsible and unsafe operations can cause direct harm to these precious endangered wildlife. Having this in mind, the Dive Operators Working Group of Timor-Leste, with the support from our partners at Market Development Facility, is launching a whale tourism campaign this year focusing on safe and responsible whale tour operations in Timor-Leste.
This video captures the fundamentals of the whale season in the country, our recommendations on how to choose responsible tours, and what you should know when participating in one.
