Rise Above Lebanon (Full Version)

Follow on instagram! @riseabovelebanon

We spent 5 summer months filming Lebanon from Above, including its rural, urban, cultural touristic and historical location, as well as the amazing number of festivals.

The idea was to show Lebanon's beauty, diversity and wealth from another angle (above), in order to encourage and promote international and domestic tourism.

My main personal goal is to remind us all that Lebanon is not all about problems, political turmoil, trash...etc but is first and foremost a country that has so much to offer on such a small portion of land, and is still, in spite of everything, truly beautiful.

Maybe by seeing this video, people who lost sight of what Lebanon truly is, will have newfound optimism and strength to participate in steering the country in the right direction, to understand that it is their country to love and protect.

_____________________________________________________

We filmed from mid June to early November and covered Mount Lebanon, Beirut, Southern Lebanon, the Bekaa, Baalbek and North Lebanon.

The book, also titled Rise Above Lebanon, was released on 2 December 2015. it is a hardcover photography book of the highest standard, with 200 pages of images of Lebanon from Above and is available in all major bookshops in Lebanon.

Beirut is the capital and largest city of Lebanon. No recent population census has been conducted, but 2007 estimates ranged from slightly more than 1 million to 2.2 million as part of Greater Beirut, which makes it the third-largest city in the Levant region and the fifteenth-largest in the Arab world. On a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon's Mediterranean coast, Beirut is an important regional seaport.
It is one of the oldest cities in the world, having been inhabited for more than 5,000 years. The first historical mention of Beirut is found in the Amarna letters from the New Kingdom of Egypt, which date to the 15th century BC.

Beirut is Lebanon's seat of government and plays a central role in the Lebanese economy, with most banks and corporations based in its Central District, Badaro, Rue Verdun, Hamra, Ryad el Soleh street, and Achrafieh. Following the destructive Lebanese Civil War, Beirut's cultural landscape underwent major reconstruction.[6][7][8] Identified and graded for accountancy, advertising, banking, finance and law, Beirut is ranked as a Beta World City by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network.

City Tour in One Minute: Beirut, Lebanon

Part of my series showcasing my travels around the world

Walking around Beirut, Lebanon 2018 | Tourist sights and attractions

As you saw in my previous video, I spent the first day of my visit to Lebanon in the seaside town of Byblos and along the Mediterranean coast. A local bus took me back to Beirut after dark and now I had another 48 hours of this weekend trip to explore the capital of Lebanon.

I started the day with a walk along the Corniche, which is popular with runners, bikers, families and fishermen.
It stretches 5 kilometers from the Beirut marina all the way to Pigeon Rocks, a monumental natural arch which is often considered THE landmark of Beirut and a must-see when in town.
This is one of the few places in town that is less hectic and loud. When you are at the outlook in front of the rocks, you can walk down to the shore and explore the area from multiple angles.

Just a few blocks east, there's Hamra, a chaotic, congested and noisy neighborhood which is not just packed with cars honking day and night, but also lots of cafés and restaurants as well as shops selling pretty much anything.
I had very tasty lunch here in one of the restaurants. Lebanese food was actually one of the reasons I came here and I was never disappointed.

After lunch, I continued east along Hamra street and eventually reached Downtown Beirut, the central district with its posh high-end designer stores, over-priced outdoor cafés and restored buildings which were originally built during the French mandate in the early 20th century. The central square of this area is called Place de l'Etoile and features a 1930s clock tower and French-style Art Deco architecture.
This area feels entirely different than Hamra: there are traffic lights and you can cross the street without running the risk being run over by a car, there are no potholes, it is very clean,
but it somehow seemed to lack authenticity.

Some of the most significant places of worship in town are located here: Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral and Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque. In between, there is a huge archeological site.

As I happened to be in town just after Christmas, I still got to see the nativity scene on Martyrs' Square and something I had never imagined seeing here: A huge Christmas tree just next to the major mosque.
Beirut is home to so many different religious denominations and this becomes obvious when the Muslim call to prayer coincides with the bells of the adjacent church.

East of the downtown district is Gemmayzeh, one of Beirut's trendiest neighborhoods. There are not just great bars and restaurants here, but also local fashion and designer stores as well as galleries. Some businesses here are so hipster that it hurts!
This neighborhood was really nice to hang out in. Definitely come here after dark, if you enjoy clubs and bars. Somehow, I realized that I don't have any good footage of the nightlife, but it is really something to experience for yourself.

Each neighborhood is unique and there is so much to see and do. Take your time and explore different parts of town, if you have the time.

As this intense weekend came to an end, I felt a bit overwhelmed by all the amazing things I've seen and done in and around Beirut. I left with an overly positive impression of a country that is often portrayed very negatively by the mainstream media. The friendly and welcoming locals certainly deserve better. This was not my last visit to Lebanon and I can't wait to come back someday.

Downtown Beirut, Lebanon

Short video of Downtown Beirut, Lebanon. Recorded with a Sony a7III.

Byblos - Jbeil the oldest city

Byblos is in Lebanon, on the Mediterranean coast about 26 miles north of Beirut. “Byblos” is the Greek name; the city was known as “Gebal” to the Phoenicians and it was called “Jbeil” in Arabic. Byblos was the first city built by the Phoenicians.

Carbon-dating tests have set the earliest age of settlement at Byblos around 7000 BC, however it was not officially established as a city until sometime around 5000 BC.

#1 ♡ Beirut, Lebanon

Hello everyone,

I thought that the best video to inaugurate this little youtube channel with was a quick overview on my trip in my favorite city in the world, Beirut.
I know the work is not of the best, it was my first time using my new camera and the editing software. I hope you'll be kind to me.
With this said, I hope you enjoy and will stick around because there is more to come! ♡

Lots and lots of love,
Gizzy ♡

While many learned professors have abandoned hope of ever discovering the truth behind Cheap Hotels in Beirut, I for one feel that it is still a worthy cause for examination. I find my self constantly drawn back to the subject of Cheap Hotels in Beirut. Indispensable to homosapiens today, it is impossible to overestimate its impact on modern thought. The juxtaposition of Cheap Hotels in Beirut with fundamental economic, social and political strategic conflict draws criticism from the upper echelons of progressive service sector organizations, obviously. Complex though it is I shall now attempt to provide an exhaustive report on Cheap Hotels in Beirut and its numerous 'industries'.

Beirut -- tiny yet amazing city.

Song by
Fairouz li Beyrouth(To Beirut)

Here's the lyrics in english:

A greeting from my heart to Beirut
kisses to the sea and to the houses
to a rock, which is like an old sailor's face
She is made from the people's soul..from wine
She is from his sweat...a bread and Jasmins
So how does her taste become? A taste of fire and smoke

Glory from the ashes to Beirut
My city has turned out her lamp
From the blood of a child carried upon her hand
She shut her door, and became alone in the sky
Alone with the night
You are mine, you are mine
Ah Hug me you are mine
You are my flag, tomorrow stone
And a travel's waves
The wounds of my people have blossomed
And mothers tear
You are mine, you are mine
Ah Hug me ...
