One of Europe's smallest countries - The beautiful Liechtenstein (Vaduz city)

Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world and it is located between Austria and Switzerland, with the size of only 162 square kilometers. The country is located in the Upper Rhine Valley in the European Alps and is one of the only 2 doubly landlocked countries in the world. It is Europe's last absolute monarchy/principality, and its monarchs are the richest royals in Europe. The Capital of the country is Vaduz with only around 5400 people. One interesting fact about this country is that there are more registered companies and jobs than there are people. This means that the country is very rich and has the most exports per capita per person. They use Swiss Franc as their currency and they speak German language but with a certain dialect. Liechtenstein has no airport so the best way to go there is through Austria or Switzerland by train or car. It is a perfect side trip when you are already near the boarder of these 2 countries.

Tip: You can have your passport stamped at the Toursim/ post office in Vaduz for around 3 euros.

00:00 - View from the bus from Buch, Switzerland to Vaduz, Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein ; German: [ˈlɪçtn̩ʃtaɪn]), officially the Principality of Liechtenstein (German: Fürstentum Liechtenstein), is a German-speaking microstate located in the Alps between Austria and Switzerland. Liechtenstein is a constitutional monarchy headed by the Prince of Liechtenstein.

Liechtenstein is bordered by Switzerland to the west and south and Austria to the east and north. It is Europe's fourth-smallest country, with an area of just over 160 square kilometres (62 square miles) and a population of 38,749 (in 2019). Divided into 11 municipalities, its capital is Vaduz, and its largest municipality is Schaan. It is also the smallest country to border two countries. Liechtenstein is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world; the other being Uzbekistan.

Economically, Liechtenstein has one of the highest gross domestic products per person in the world when adjusted for purchasing power parity. The country has a strong financial sector centred in Vaduz. It was once known as a billionaire tax haven, but is no longer on any official blacklists of uncooperative tax haven countries. An Alpine country, Liechtenstein is mountainous, making it a winter sport destination.

Liechtenstein is a member of the United Nations, the European Free Trade Association, and the Council of Europe. Although not a member of the European Union, it participates in both the Schengen Area and the European Economic Area. It has a customs union and a monetary union with Switzerland. Liechtenstein is situated in the Upper Rhine valley of the European Alps and is bordered to the east by the Austrian state of Vorarlberg and to the south by the canton of Grisons (Switzerland) and to the west by the canton of St. Gallen (Switzerland). The Rhine forms the entire western border of Liechtenstein. Measured south to north the country is about 24 km (15 mi) long. Its highest point, the Grauspitz, is 2,599 m (8,527 ft). Despite its Alpine location, prevailing southerly winds make the climate comparatively mild. In winter, the mountain slopes are well suited to winter sports.

New surveys using more accurate measurements of the country's borders in 2006 have set its area at 160 km2 (62 sq mi), with borders of 77.9 km

Liechtenstein is one of the world's two doubly landlocked countries[47] – countries wholly surrounded by other landlocked countries (the other is Uzbekistan). Liechtenstein is the sixth-smallest independent nation in the world by area.

The principality of Liechtenstein is divided into 11 communes called Gemeinden (singular Gemeinde). The Gemeinden mostly consist of only a single town or village. Five of them (Eschen, Gamprin, Mauren, Ruggell, and Schellenberg) fall within the electoral district Unterland (the lower county), and the remainder (Balzers, Planken, Schaan, Triesen, Triesenberg, and Vaduz) within Oberland (the upper county). The Rhine is the longest and largest body of water in Liechtenstein. With a length of approximately 27 kilometers, it represents the natural border with Switzerland and is of great importance for Liechtenstein's water supply. Furthermore, the Rhine is an important recreational area for the population. At 10 kilometers, the Samina is the second longest river in the Principality. The troubled river begins at Triesenberg and flows into the Ill in Austria (near Feldkirch).

The only naturally formed lake in Liechtenstein is the Gampriner Seelein, which was not formed until 1927 by a flooding of the Rhine with enormous erosion. In addition, there are other artificially created lakes, which are mainly used to generate electricity. One of them is the Steg Reservoir, the largest lake in Liechtenstein.

Mountains
About half of Liechtenstein's territory is mountainous.[48] Liechtenstein lies entirely in the Rhaetikon and is thus – depending on the classification of the Alps – assigned to the Eastern Alps (two-part division of the Alps) or the Central Alps (three-part division of the Alps).

The highest point of Liechtenstein is the Vordere Grauspitz (Vordergrauspitz) with an altitude of 2599 m above sea level, while the lowest point is the Ruggeller Riet with an altitude of 430 m above sea level.

In total, there are 32 mountains in Liechtenstein with an altitude of at least 2000 meters. The Falknishorn, at 2452 meters above sea level, is the fifth highest mountain in Liechtenstein and represents the southernmost point of the country. The Liechtenstein-Graubünden-Vorarlberg border triangle is the Naafkopf (2570 m above sea level).[48]

In addition to the peaks of the Alpine chain,[49] which belong to the Limestone Alps, two inselbergs, Fläscherberg (1135 m a.s.l.) in the south and Eschnerberg (698 m a.s.l.) in the north, rise from the Rhine Valley and belong to the Helvetic cover or flysch zone of the Alps.[50] Eschnerberg represents an important settlement area in the Liechtenstein Unterland. mapa de Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein Vaduz

Liechtenstein is a German-speaking microstate situated in the Alps and in the southwest of Central Europe.
Liechtenstein is bordered by Switzerland to the west and south and Austria to the east and north. It is Europe's fourth-smallest country, with an area of just over 160 square kilometres and a population of 38,749. Liechtenstein is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world, along with Uzbekistan.
Economically, Liechtenstein has one of the highest gross domestic products per person in the world when adjusted for purchasing power parity. It was once known as a billionaire tax haven, but is no longer on any blacklists of uncooperative tax haven countries.

Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein

Vaduz is the capital of a European country and has a population of around 5,000 people - in total there are around 37,000 Liechtensteiners. The country plays in the World Cup and other international tournaments and usually ends up bottom of the league - which is not surprising in the circumstances and all credit to it for playing! The good news about its football is however that we can park our vans at the national stadium car park for CHF0.50 per hour with a maximum charge of CHF4 and at the weekend it is free!

Vaduz probably dates back to around 1322 when it was founded by the Counts of Werdenberg. What is today the princely castle must have been founded around the same time. In the 17th century the Liechtenstein family was seeking a seat in the Imperial diet, the Reichstag. However, since they did not hold any territory that was directly under the Imperial throne, they were unable to meet the primary requirement to qualify. However it managed to acquire what is today the area around Vaduz which gave them the right to sit in the Reichstag and in turn gave birth to the Principality of Liechtenstein. Once that was settled, none of the Princes of Liechtenstein bothered to set foot in their principality for over 120 years.

Today the princely family resides at Vaduz Castle which looks over the town, national stadium and its car park. The castle was formerly a jail and an inn before needing renovation for the princely family. It is out of bounds to visitors, however there is a well marked trail to walk up to see it which offers wonderful views over the town and mountains all around.

The Cathedral of St. Florin, Government House and City Hall are also well-known landmarks. The National Art Gallery as well as the National Museum are located in Vaduz. The art gallery (Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein) is a museum of modern and contemporary art, also showing displays from the private princely Liechtenstein Collection, the main public display of which is in Vienna. The building is an architectural landmark built by the Swiss architects Morger, Degelo and Kerez. It was completed in November 2000 and forms a “black box” of tinted concrete and black basalt stone. The museum collection is also the national art collection of Liechtenstein. The Liechtenstein National Museum is showing a permanent exhibition on the cultural and natural history of Liechtenstein as well as special exhibitions. There are also the Postage Stamp Museum and a Ski Museum.

Solo Backpacking Trip to LIECHTENSTEIN (one of the smallest countries in the world)

I went on a solo backpacker weekend trip to a mini state in Europe: Liechtenstein. Weather was really good and I enjoyed exploring the country on the go, without a real plan, mainly by foot as I like it.

I flew from Brussels to Zürich, from where I took a train and bus to Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein. On the way back I made a stop in Rapperswil in Switzerland to meet a Ukrainian friend.

I stayed 2 nights in the only hostel in the country:
