The Baobab Trees (Madagascar)

The Baobab trees (also known as an upside down bottles or monkey bread trees) are believed to be the largest succulents in the world as well as some of the tallest trees. There are several different species that vary somewhat in appearance, but all are deciduous, flowering trees that can live for hundreds and even thousands of years. They are slow-growing trees that are indigenous to Madagascar, Africa and Australia. They can grow up to 70 feet tall and feature an over-sized, extremely wide caudex that the plant utilizes for water storage during the dry season. The bark is brown and gray and typically smooth, though it can crack and bend as the tree ages. Leaves are elongated and appear in clusters of up to seven leaflets. During the winter the plant sheds its leaves only to grow them again in the springtime and summer.

Madagascar is one of the worlds largest islands, red from the colour of the earth, and full of tropical life. We meet Elysee a botany student with a fascination for her country’s national tree: the baobab. Soloda is a vaso, which is a group of nomadic coastal inhabitants who lives in an isolated village on the Mozambique channel. And Gil, a Frenchman has lived on the island for over 20 years, and has made his home in the foothills of the mountains working on reforesting the valley where he lives.

Here is where Hadzabe tribe gets water from! Baobab Trees have been great tools for holding and saving water from the rains. When it comes to the drought, Hadzabe searched for Baobab Trees where possibly they can find water and drink from it. The water is just as clean as it is, it has been stayed hidden inside the Baobab's hole where dust can not reach

Baobab fruit ???? (mőnch)

Filmed on the 10th and 13th of December 2022 in Morondava, Madagascar

Did you know that baobab trees produce an edible fruit? Me neither.

At the market in Morondava there were many vendors of baobab fruit. Makes sense, it's a city close to the famous Avenue of the Baobabs:

We bought two baobab fruit (one to accidentally mess up, one to eat) and tried it out. It's good!

Allées du baobab and Morondava, West Madagascar highlights

Morondava is famous amongst other things for the spectacular Avenue of Baobabs, these giant baobab trees are an 800-year-old legacy of the dense tropical forests that once throve here. The Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located 150 km north of Morondava. Kirindy Forest is a nature reserve about 60 km from Morondava where many of the local species of lemurs can be spotted.

Madagascar avenue of the giant Baobab trees

Madagascar Avenue des Baobabs close to Morondova. I drove through this worldfamous forest of giant trees on my way to Kirindy National Park in my Toyota Landcruiser 4WD, a dusty and bumpy ride.

A Giant Baobab Tree, Madagascar

There are seven species of baobab trees and four of them are in Madagascar. They are sometimes called the 'tree of life' or the 'upside down tree' as it looks like they have been uprooted and then stuck in the ground with the roots in the air. They are majestic and can store large volumes of water in their trunks to withstand the dry season droughts. Unfortunately the large forests of them that used to cover parts of Madagascar have largely been decimated.

Madagascar is a country that occupies a large island of the same name, located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa. It is the fourth-largest island in the world. Madagascar’s primordial forests, dramatic peaks, extinct volcanoes and stony deserts are an otherworldly experience. Best beaches in Madagascar - Anakao, Boeny Region, Île aux Nattes (Nosy Nato), Salary and Nosy Iranja.
Avenue of the Baobabs is an extraordinary stand of huge baobab trees. Truly a photographers paradise and especially beautiful at sunset. What to do at Madagascar: kite, windsurfing, guided kayaking, deep sea fishing, diving or wildlife tour.
