Tajrish & Darband... What's Affluent Northern Tehran Like?
In the 19th and final episode of Paths Less Traveled - Iran, I’m back in Tehran and staying in the affluent north of the city before leaving.
I’ll stay and begin in Tajrish (تجریش), exploring and shopping in the Tajrish Bazaar (بازار سنتی تجریش) as well as visiting the beautiful Imamzadeh Saleh shrine (امام زاده صالح).
Next it’s off to see how the Pahlavi royalty lived at the Saadabad Palaces in the Saadabad Historical Complex (مجموعه فرهنگی تاریخی سعدآباد) where we visit the White Palace, the Green Palace and the interesting Omidvar Brothers' Museum (موزه برادران امیدوار) dedicated to a couple of Iranian brothers, Issa and Abdullah Omidvar, who started a journey to travel the world back in 1954!
After the palaces we’ll head up to Bame Tehran (بام تهران) for incredible views over this huge city.
Then we head into Darband itself. Cool and nestled in the mountains with folks selling preserved fruits on the street, we go all the way up to the amazing Koohpaye Restaurant (رستوران کوهپایه) which I learnt about from watching Mr Taster celebrate his blue tick on Instagram there!
Come and join me for the end of this epic trip, and goodbyes to the beautiful people of Iran.
Iran is NOT it’s leaders! This was the real Iran - the people, the history, the culture and the food.

STREET FOOD IN IRAN
1. Food Stall: Sour Fruit Aloche
ADDRESS: Darband, Tehran, Iran
???? FRUIT ALOCHE: Soak dried fruit (plums, berries, apricots, cherries, etc.) in sugary sour syrup and then serve.

2. ALI BABA VITAMINEH: Majoon
ADDRESS: District 12, Tehran, Iran

????MAJOON: In a blender, mix together milk, saffron ice cream, vanilla ice cream and palm sap. Add coffee, cocoa, cinnamon and banana essence for flavor. Pour in fig, coconut powder and damask rose, then add granules (for fruit puree), walnut, sesame, pistachio mill, rose water, egg yolk, cream and pineapple compote.

3. Food Stall: Sohan
????SOHAN: In a bowl, mix together egg yolks, flour, sprouted wheat flour saffron, sugar and vegetable oil. Add heat until it becomes dense after 20 minutes. Remove from mixing vessel and portion into smaller pieces. Smash it and then top with pistachios and/or almonds. Cut it into squares and serve.

4. Bakery: Taftan
ADDRESS: Tehran Province, Tehran, Iran
????TAFTAN: Sift the flour into a bowl and add salt. Add yeast and yogurt and mix well. Knead well into a smooth dough by adding milk. Set aside the dough for fermentation. Brush oil on the dough and divide it into equal portions in a ball. Using only your fingertips, press lightly to make groves all around. Cook in a hot tandoor for fifteen to twenty minutes, basting with the remaining ghee once halfway through the cooking. Serve hot.

Darband was formerly a village close to Tajrish, Shemiran, and is now a neighbourhood inside Tehran's city limits. It is the beginning of a very popular hiking trail into the Mount Tochal, which towers over Tehran. A chair lift is also available for those not interested in hiking.
The Persian word darband means gateway or door of the mountain (band, a variation of vand and fand, meaning mountain).
Darband is where many Iranian giants of art and culture such as Iraj Mirza, Mohammad Taghi Bahar, Forough Farrokhzad, Abolhasan Saba, Ruhollah Khaleghi, Rahi Moayeri, and Darvish-khan are buried (Zahir o-dowleh cemetery).
Darband has a suitable climate all year round, and sees heavy snowfall every year.
The initial start of the trail at Darband is about 250 metres long and is dotted with a number of small cafes and restaurants. These are quite popular and are busy in the evenings, as locals and tourists alike visit the many hooka lounges (locally called qavekhane sonnati) along the trail.

آرامش زیبای شمال تهران دربند و بهترین غذاهای خیابانی ایران کشور با آبشار شگفت انگیز:
دربند قبلاً روستایی نزدیک به تجریش شمیران بوده و اکنون محله ای در محدوده شهر تهران است. این نقطه آغاز یک مسیر پیاده روی بسیار محبوب به سمت کوه توچال است که بر فراز تهران قرار دارد. آسانسور صندلی نیز برای کسانی که علاقه ای به پیاده روی ندارند در دسترس است.
واژه فارسی «دربند» به معنای دروازه یا درِ کوه است (بند، وند و فند به معنای کوه).
دربند جایی است که بسیاری از غولهای هنر و فرهنگ ایرانی مانند ایرج میرزا، محمدتقی بهار، فروغ فرخزاد، ابوالحسن صبا، روحالله خالقی، رهی معیری و درویشخان در آن دفن شدهاند (قبرستان ظهیرالدوله).
دربند در تمام طول سال آب و هوای مناسبی دارد و همه ساله شاهد بارش برف سنگین است.
شروع اولیه مسیر دربند حدود 250 متر طول دارد و با تعدادی کافه و رستوران کوچک پر شده است. اینها بسیار پرطرفدار هستند و عصرها شلوغ هستند، زیرا مردم محلی و گردشگران به طور یکسان از قلیانخانههای متعدد (بهطور محلی به آن غزل قاوخانه) در امتداد مسیر دیدن میکنند.
