Belize | Caye Caulker & Ambergris Caye | Travel Guide | Things to Know and Expect

On this video, we take a look at the laidback lifestyle of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. Two islands in the northern part of Belize. The Cayes of Belize are quintessential Caribbean. If you’re looking to mellow out in the sun and party it up at night with water activities in between, such as snorkeling and diving in the largest Barrier Reef in the Northern Hemisphere, this place should be on your bucket list.

Caye Caulker Belize Island - Travel guide 2019

Caye Caulker is and island located a short boat ride from Belize City. In this travel guide we share our experiences and time on the wonderful island.

Caye Caulker is the ideal get away for those looking for the taste of island life. It is home to the most beautiful blue waters and if your looking for the ultimate chill our bar, where you can also enjoy the sea then head down to the Lazy Lizard bar located on the Split.

The split is the name given to the small channel of water that runs straight through the middle of the island.

A trip to Caye Caulker wouldn't be complete without going on one of the many snorkelling tours on offer. The reef that runs down the coastline of Belize and Honduras is the second largest reef in the world.

There are lots of different shops selling snorkelling tours but we decided to use Reef Friendly Tours - They are the most environmentally friendly tours and we like to support businesses who help a good cause. We had a fabulous snorkelling tour and we would not hesitate in recommending them.

Thanks for watching

Top 10 things to do in CAYE CAULKER BELIZE without spending a FORTUNE; Budget travel Belize Islands

This guide shows unique and fun things to do when you visit Caye Caulker, Belize on vacation! Try snorkeling, feeding stingrays and tarpon, viewing wildlife like sharks and seahorses, maybe a swim and hunting for starfish, then a yoga class or a massage to relax before sunset. And don't forget to try the fresh seafood too! There are a ton of snorkeling and scuba tours available but there are many more sites to see while on the island and most of these activities are FREE! If you want to do them all in one day, rent a bike and ride from place to place - the island is only 2 miles long and most of the city is within a half mile radius. ENJOY!!!

I've lived on the island for a month and learned a lot from locals. Here are a few tips and things to know about Caye Caulker:

1) USD are accepted everywhere. The current exchange rate is $2 BZD for every $1 USD. Change may be given in BZD or USD. Credit cards are accepted at a lot of places but ask before buying to make sure and also see if there is a transaction fee added to it - there usually is.

2) There are two main ways to get to the island - ferry or plane. By the time you calculate the cost of the ferry ticket and the taxi to get from the airport to the ferry terminal, the cost difference is negligible and you will save a ton of time by taking the 10 minute flight. Plus it's such an experience to be able to sit next to the pilot!!!

3) Caye Caulker is much slower and laid back compared to Ambergris Caye. There are far fewer tourists as well.

4) There are no cars on the island - walk, ride a bike or rent a golf cart!

5) All of the tour companies are great and they also collaborate to set a uniform price for tours. Your only way to get a deal is to negotiate directly with the company. I told them that I didn't go through TripAdvisor/Viator to book the tour to save them money by cutting out the middleman and received a $10 discount. Most of these tours are worth it for the boat ride and gear for snorkeling in the ocean. But the tarpon feeding, stingray and shark feedings, seahorse sanctuary are all free - so the fact that they usually stop there doesn't really add value to your trip.

6) I have received no compensation from any of the companies mentioned in this video. These are my honest opinions after being here for awhile and learning the ropes!

7) Tipping in Belize is always appreciated. To put it in perspective, the minimum wage is $1.75 USD.

8) Caye Caulker is a very safe place to visit. People are very friendly and everyone will say hello to you on the streets! English is spoken everywhere and some people also speak real, Spanish and Mayan.

Our Gear:
We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

A Walking Tour of Caye Caulker

There are many things to do in Caye Caulker, Belize. From snorkeling, diving, and fishing to savoring Caribbean style street food - Caye Caulker (interchangeably referred to as Key Caulker by many travelers) is a tropical lifestyle enthusiast's dream come true. This idyllic island just off the coast of Belize, accessible by airplane or ferry boat, is the perfect destination if you're looking to soak up the sun and enjoy the very best of the west Caribbean.

In this video, I take you on a walking tour of Caye Caulker (also spelled Key Caulker) and showcase some of the best street food, tropical drinks, and party venues which are not to be missed.

I've been fishing, diving, and exploring Belize for almost eight years, and I can tell you first hand, that each island has its own distinctive personality. Caye Caulker has a stronger Garifuna influence than San Pedro town, which is evident in the low key tropical vibe that defines the island. Walking the main strip on Caye Caulker affords you the opportunity to enjoy a variety of beach barbecues, a myriad of charter boats which can take you out to explore the coral reefs, and of course - a variety of beach bars which specialize in all kinds of tropical libations.

Is Caye Caulker safe? Absolutely. While you should always exercise good judgement and avoid seeking out trouble anywhere you go - Caye Caulker is safe for tourists. The island depends on tourism to support its community, and they make safety a priority whether you're drinking, eating, diving, or staying in one of the many hotels or hostels on the island.

If you're wondering how to get to Caye Caulker - it's easy! You can fly direct to Caye Caulker from Belize City on Tropic Air or Maya Air - or - you can take a ferry boat. If you're staying on nearby Ambergris Caye (san pedro town) there is a ferry to Caye Caulker which departs every hour. Needless to say, don't stress about how to get to Caye Caulker. It's extremely easy.

When it comes to things to do in Caye Caulker, or Key Caulker in English, there is no shortage of activities for everyone to enjoy. The most popular things to do in Caye Caulker include snorkeling, diving, walking around the island, drinking at one of the dozen or so famous tiki bars, or shopping for artisan crafts. You will never run out of things to do in Key Caulker, as long as you are inclined to enjoy water sports and enjoy Caribbean lifestyle.

I'm often asked is Caye Caulker a party island? And the answer is - yes! There is always a party somewhere on the island, whether its one of the beach bars hosting a DJ, or a outdoor dancehall where the reggae jams blast late into the night. Caye Caulker is a party island, which is ideal for travelers who are looking to drink and dance, but there's certainly many other things to do.

Is Caye Caulker Belize expensive? Not at all. Activities, accommodations, and dining on the island are much more affordable than nearby Ambergris Caye. But with that in mind, Caye Caulker is not a fancy or extravagant place. This is a tropical island - so expect sandy floors, unpaved roads, outdoor dining, and dusty conditions. One of the best things about visiting Caye Caulker is that it is an affordable place to really enjoy the best of the Caribbean. Drinks range from $2US to $9US and you can eat a seafood meal consisting of lobster or snapper with rice and beans for less than $15US. You can certainly find ways to spend your money faster than you realize, but without questions, Caye Caulker Belize is not very expensive compared to other Caribbean destinations which offer similar things to do.

Is it better to stay on Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye? That depends on your lifestyle. Caye Caulker attracts a younger, adventurous, and celebratory demographic - typically backpackers and travelers making their way through Central America. Ambergris Caye attracts a broader demographic of travelers, from budget backpackers to ultra affluent retirees - and there is no shortage of fine dining or luxury accommodations around San Pedro town. The best thing to do is experience both islands - spend a few days on Ambergris Caye, then take the ferry over to Key Caulker and hang out until it's time to depart through Belize City for your next destination.
