TIRANA, ALBANIA | 8 BEST Things To Do In & Around Tirana
Tirana is located in central Albania and has been the country’s capital since 1920. And although it experienced political turmoil until 1991, the city has now evolved into the cultural and entertainment center of the country. Check out the Best Things to Do In & Around Tirana:
8. Free walking tour
The first and foremost thing you should do in Tirana is go on a free walking tour. During the 2.5 hour tour, you explore Tirana’s downtown area while learning about the city and country’s turbulent history, art, and everyday life. The tour runs every day from the Opera House.

7. Visit the New Bazaar
Tirana’s New Bazaar (Pazari ri Bazaar) is a newly renovated market that offers fresh fruits, vegetables, as well as souvenirs, local wine, and raki. Around the bazaar, you will find several bars and restaurants to drink and eat at. Many of these places are called ‘zgara’s’, which is a grill house.
6. Go on a day trip to Kruja
Located only 20 km north of Tirana, Kruja can easily be reached by public bus from the “South and North Albania Bus Terminal”. Kruja played a crucial role in the 15th century when it was the center of the Albanian opposition, led by the national hero Skanderbeg during the Ottoman invasion. Skenderbeg is still celebrated here today and there is even an entire museum dedicated to him. You can find this museum inside the beautiful castle that overlooks the town.
5. Wine & dine at Tirana Castle
Tirana also has its very own castle, located in the heart of the city. Only this fortress has been transformed into a commercial space, filled with restaurants, wine bars, art and souvenir shops. It’s actually a great place to have dinner with a glass of wine, and we found it quite affordable as well.
4. Explore Blloku
Another great area for entertainment in Tirana is Blloku. This small neighborhood really comes alive at night and is a trendy spot among locals. In addition to a variety of hip bars, night clubs, and cafés, you can also find some of the best restaurants in Tirana here.
3. Take the Dajti Ekspres
Located in the outskirts of Tirana, the Dajti Ekspres cable car takes you to Dajti National Park which is 1,613m above sea level. It’s easy to get to the cable car station by public bus. Once you’re in the cable car, the ride offers panoramic views of Tirana and the nature around it.

2. Visit Bunk’art
Bunk’art 1 is a large bunker with five levels, which was meant to be used by communist leader Hoxha and his regime in case of a nuclear attack. The bunker has now been converted into a museum, which covers the history of Albania’s past century in great detail. But it’s the preserved rooms, conceptual art, and sound effects that really bring the story to life.
1. Hike Lake Bovilla
Lake Bovilla is a stunning reservoir that lies within Dajti National Park. Surrounded by two mountain ranges, hiking is the best activity you can do here. Gamti Mountain offers the most spectacular views of the lake and doesn’t require any experience. There are even some man-made stairs that help you get to the top.

Saranda is a coastal town on the Albanian Riviera along the Ionian Sea. It’s the largest city in southern Albania, and only a 30-minute ferry ride away from the popular Greek island of Corfu. In recent years, Saranda has become a popular tourist destination thanks to its easy access, affordability, and strategic location to discover other beaches and historic sites from. The city itself is very lively, with lots of entertainment options throughout the day and night.

In today's vlog we decided to find out exactly what things make Tirana, Albania so unique. After a day exploring, we quickly found out that Tirana has such a cool way of remembering their history whether it's beautiful or not. Come along as we explore the best things to do in Tirana!
We're starting today a bit differently. Son Juice Shop is located in Tirana Castle. This castle is the most unique we’ve seen in the fact that it’s been renovated just a little differently from all the others, and kind of perfectly embodies what Tirana’s about. This area serves as a culinary environment for traditional cooking, but also as an area of culture and art. Stay tuned for later to see it at night!
The Great Mosque of Tirana, or Namazgah Mosque, is a mosque here that’s nearing its construction completion but not quite done yet so we can’t go in just yet to see it. But that’s no problem because right next to the Tirana Castle is a huge shopping mall that has 7 floors with an excellent view of the mosque from the very top floor.
Our next stop is kind of hard to miss. Skanderbeg Square is the heart of Tirana & it’s where Tirana’s most important monuments are located. The square has a host of museums, monuments, & places of worship, including our next stop.
If you’re in Skanderbeg Square then you’ll have no issues spotting Et’hem Bey Mosque. It sits on the Southeast corner of the square and has been here since its completion in the 19th century. What makes this mosque so significant outside of its location is that it’s one of the few religious centers that survived the Soviet era where religious activity was banned.
Right next to the mosque is the Clock Tower. This tower was constructed in 1822 & makes for a perfect spot to get a really good view of Skanderbeg Square from above.
Next up was Bunk’Art 2. Bunk’Art is an underground contemporary art & history museum located inside Soviet Era bunkers.
One thing about Tirana is that it’s HOT in the summer, so we’re headed to Rruga Murat Toptani, or Murat Toptani Road to get some great Greek food!
One bummer about today is that currently we can’t visit the Pyramid of Tirana since it’s being renovated. The Pyramid of Tirana is a Soviet-era structure & museum built in 1988 honoring the legacy of Communist Albanian leader Enver Hoxha. It's since fallen into disarray but is currently being built into a community center. It’s just really cool to me how Albanians don’t knock down these old monuments and reminders of their history. They instead repurpose them & use them for something positive.
Not too far away from the center of town is Grand Park. Hannah & I walked here a couple days ago and it’s a cool park to enjoy a walk around the lake. You’ll see people fishing, running, & enjoying the little play areas around here. It’s a nice spot to get away from the busy center of town.
For dinner we’re going back to Tirana Castle since it’s a really awesome night spot with a ton of restaurants.

Tirana travel vlog | The BEST things to do in capital of Albania
Hey everybody, welcome back to a new Albania travel vlog! Follow along as I travel to one of the best European travel destination (in my opinion). I spent 3 days in Tirana, Albania. In this Albania vlog, I'm exploring the best things to do in the capital of Albania. After spending some time at the coast of Albania, it felt nice to explore a lively city again. My first impressions of Tirana, Albania were great and it's amongst the most affordable cities in Europe to travel to. In general, Albania is one of the best places to visit in Europe if you're on a budget!
Tirana has a lot to offer and in my opinion Tirana is worth visiting if you're ever in Albania! During my 3 days in Tirana, I visited Bunkart 1 and Bunkart 2, took the Dajti ekspres up to Dajti mountain, enjoyed loads of Albanian food, and just wandered around Tirana. I also went to a cool pub with some friends I met at the hostel but I will have to make another video where I include this, so stay tuned for that!
