In October 2017 did I visit Syria for 10 days as a tourist, I was free to do whatever I wanted to do, I visited Damascus - Aleppo - Homs with its countryside - Tartous during my visit.

Also known as Syrian Kurdistan, a semi-autonomous region in northern Syria

Sturdy walls and gates protect the ancient historic city of Aleppo in Syria.The narrow lanes in the old town, and its many historic buildings, have retained all the character and charm of a mediaeval metropolis. The city has a flourishing economy which is mainly due to its favourable location at the junction of several important trading routes. In 1169 the Umayyade Mosque was re-built at the command of the Zengid monarch, Nureddin, but only its impressive forty five metre high minaret has survived to the present day. The Baits are true architectural gems of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, noble and often palatial-looking buildings that once belonged to the city’s elite classes. Today Aleppo shines out once again in the glory of its six thousand years of history and continues to highlight its unique significance as one of the most important cities in the Orient.

Damascus is one of the most fascinating cities in the Orient and its colourful history is still very much apparent in its magnificent palaces.Today an impressive statue serves as a reminder of the city’s famous monarch, Saladin. In the twelfth century he did much to improve the city. A walk through the historic centre of Damascus is like a journey through more than two thousand years of oriental history. In contrast to many other cities in the Near and Middle East, most of the original buildings within the old town have survived the test of time. The city’s strategic location at the junction of several important caravan routes gave rise to a large number of fortified inns or ‘Caravansaries’, such as the Khan As’ad Pasha Al Azem. The Omayyad Mosque was for many years the largest and most revered in the Islamic world and the splendid furnishings of its interior make this building a veritable treasure trove. The historic splendour of Syria’s remarkable capital city really is like a Paradise On Earth.

Ancient city of Damascus, Syria
Founded in the 3rd millennium B.C., Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the Middle East. Currently, the Ancient City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. Due to the Syrian Civil War, the city has much suffered, but historic center is still largely intact.

Palmyra (Syria) Vacation Travel Video Guide

The ruins of the ancient city of Palmyra rise up into the desert sky of Syria. The Hadrian Gate was built in the second century A.D. and highlights the glorious past of this once important trading metropolis in the Near East.Flanked by columns, a majestic twelve hundred metre long avenue was once Palmyra’s main street. As with many of the city’s other buildings it also has an impressive theatre that dates back to the second century A.D. and was discovered in the 1950’s. For some years it has once again served as a place of entertainment as each spring it features a festival. Close to the Agora, once a farmer’s market, is Palmyra’s striking main landmark, the Tetrapylon that forms the junction between the main avenue and a side road that leads to the city’s Necropolis. The subterranean Hypogaum Of The Three Brothers contains almost four hundred burial corridors and numerous artistic sculptures and frescos. From the seventh century A.D. the magnificent trading metropolis gradually fell into decline and was almost completely wiped from the map. Thankfully however, today the atmospheric ruins serve as a reminder of Palmyra’s glorious past.

Damascus, Syria, 2017
I filmed a lot of stuff in Syria last year. Unfortunately, the night before I went in, I looked at my camera stabiliser and realised how much it resembles a weapon, so I couldn't take it with me, hence the terribly shaky footage. Filming itself was difficult due to military checkpoints on most streets, as well as juggling both my DSLR for photos and GoPro for videos (also being a complete film rookie) but I managed to finally put a little bit of it together for a glimpse of Damascus in 2017.
