Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a country situated in the confluence of Western, Central, and Southern Europe. It is a federal republic composed of 26 cantons, with federal authorities based in Bern.
Switzerland is a landlocked country bordered by Italy to the south, France to the west, Germany to the north, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east. It is geographically divided among the Swiss Plateau, the Alps, and the Jura, spanning a total area of 41,285 km2 (15,940 sq mi), and land area of 39,997 km2 (15,443 sq mi). While the Alps occupy the greater part of the territory, the Swiss population of approximately 8.5 million is concentrated mostly on the plateau, where the largest cities and economic centres are located, among them Zürich, Geneva and Basel, where multiple international organisations are domiciled (such as FIFA, the UN's second-largest Office, and the Bank for International Settlements) and where the main international airports of Switzerland are.
The establishment of the Old Swiss Confederacy dates to the late medieval period, resulting from a series of military successes against Austria and Burgundy. Swiss independence from the Holy Roman Empire was formally recognized in the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. The Federal Charter of 1291 is considered the founding document of Switzerland which is celebrated on Swiss National Day.

Now we take the Glacier Express from Disentis in the direction of Zermatt. The highest point on this railway line is the Oberalp-Pass at 2,033 meters.
Andermatt is reached. The old starting point of the passes Saint Gotthard, Oberalp and Furka. Today it is also an attractive winter sports resort. In Realp we are now boarding the Furka-Mountain Railway. Now the journey leads through the municipality of Goms, and soon we are in the canton of Valais.
Fiesch is ideal for relaxation and recreation, but also the starting point of the Aletsch Arena. The Great Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier of the European Alps, bends in a wide arc from the Jungfraujoch towards Valais.
Now we have reached Brig, the historic merchant city in Upper Valais. From Täsch only trains connect Zermatt with the outside world. The Glacier Express ends here.
The most famous holiday resort in Switzerland and its famous mountain, the Matterhorn. With the Gornergrat-Railway you reach the Gorner glacier, the second largest continuous glacial area in the Alps.
Interlaken is situated between the Lakes Thun and Brienz. Brienz is the centre of Swiss woodcarving art. The Rothorn of Brienz is one of the most beautiful mountains in the Emmental Alps. The Lake Thun is narrow, and stretches for about 18 kilometres. Thun is the Gate to the Bernese Oberland. Interlaken is also the starting point to the Jungfrau region.
Grindelwald is reached and then Bern, the capital of the Swiss Confederation. Typical for Bern are the arcades, which run along both sides of the alleys and are in total 6 kilometres long.
Today Neutral Switzerland is a popular meeting place for international negotiations and also a first-class tourist destination.

Bern (Switzerland) Vacation Travel Video Guide
The Historical Museum of Bern is the right place to begin with the history of the capital of Switzerland, which was founded with a unique townscape in 1191. The compact old city centre is situated on a narrow rocky ridge, protected by a bend in the Aare river.
The late Gothic Minster Sankt Vinzenz is the largest sacred building in Switzerland. The construction of one of the most valuable late-Gothic church buildings in Northern Europe began as early as 1421.
At the top, the Nydegg bridge leads from the old town across the Aare to the opposite hill. This is where the new bear park was created, which of course every visitor to the city must have seen. The moat is home to the town's comical heraldic animals, who are more than happy here.
At Kramgasse 49, Albert Einstein worked on the theory of relativity. In his apartment, documents provide information about the life and work of the world-famous physicist.
In 1353 the meanwhile important canton joined the new Swiss Confederation. It was followed by riots and wars, but Bern survived everything and finally became the capital of Switzerland in 1848.

In 1926 the Visp-Zermatt Bahn, later the Brig-Visp-Zermatt Bahn, Furka Oberalp Bahn and the Rhätische Bahn created a direct connection between Wallis and Graubünden. Now was the time for a luxury train between Zermatt and St. Moritz. The “Glacier Express” became reality. Today, many tens of thousands from across the world make the journey annually-prof, if proof were needed, that the “Glacier Express” had grown into 'Perhaps the most ultimate train journey in the world.

The Alpine Republic of Switzerland occupies the midpoint of the centre of Central Europe. A country with a diverse culture of different traditions. Here reside a united people of brothers, who in August 1291 united an established protective alliance into a Swiss Confederation.
Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland. Its origins stem back to the Roman base of Turicum and has been a member of the Swiss Confederation since 1351.
Near Schaffhausen a world-famous wonder of nature was created, the Rhine Falls.
Romanshorn on Lake Constance is our first stop. In Rheineck, sense of the medieval is omnipresent. Gothic town houses with gables, bay windows and facade paintings.
St. Gallen is alluring with its crooked alleys with Late-Gothic half-timbered houses.
Nearby is the enclave Appenzell.
Küssnacht at the Lake Lucerne recollects Swiss history and Schiller's Wilhelm Tell can really be felt all around. Lucerne and its lake are one of the most important destinations for tourists.
St. Moritz is surrounded by mountains that invite skiers in winter and hikers and mountaineers in summer.
The town of Chur is located in East Switzerland, at the upper end of the Rhine-Valley. Since the Roman times, the St. Gotthard-Pass has led the way south to Ticino. Bellinzona, the capital of the Swiss canton of Ticino is situated at the foot of the mighty St. Gotthard massif.
Locarno stretches elegantly along the west bank of the Lake Maggiore. Brissago is located near the border to Italy. Ascona, the noble holiday resort at Lake Maggiore with its pleasantly mild climate is a picturesque old town.
In the wide semi-circular bay of Lake Lugano lies the city of Lugano. A boat trip sets sail for Gandria in the north. We take the boat to the other side of the lake to Morcote.
Ticino is the paradise in the south of Switzerland.

Travel through the Swiss Jungfrau region Vacation Travel Video Guide
In the Bernese Oberland region, in the midst of a breathtaking mountain landscape, lies lnterlaken, the starting point of our journey to some of the most beautiful places in Switzerland. The first leg of our journey will see us going up to the Harder Kulm, lnterlaken's local viewpoint. From there , we'll be boarding a paddle steamer to Brienz, and then we'll jump on a steam train to the summit of the Brienzer Rothorn. We'll be passing through the Unspunnen Festival and take in an open-air performance of Wilhelm Tell. The James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service was filmed at the Schilthorn summit, so we'll certainly also visit this unique viewpoint over the mountain village of Mürren. The train journey to the Schynige Platte will bring us to a spot that possibly provides the most beautiful panorama of the entire Jungfrau Region. Lastly, we'll take a few railway routes via the villages of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald to the kleine Scheidegg pass, and on to the Jungfraujoch saddle. In addition to present-day scenes, we'll also provide historica! shots of the landmarks of our journey.
