Openbare Markt Nickerie
Het Brassaplein is dé centrale plek van Nieuw Nickerie. Hier bevinden zich de meeste belangrijke gebouwen van de stad: De Openbare Markt Nickerie, het politiebureau, het commissariaat en het postkantoor.
Ligging
Nickerie is een van de districten van Suriname. Het ligt in het noordwesten van het land, aan de monding van de rivier de Corantijn, de grensrivier tussen Suriname en Guyana. De hoofdplaats is Nieuw-Nickerie, gelegen aan de rivier de Nickerie.
Tegenover het Baba en Mai monument bevindt zich de Openbare Markt Nickerie. Een niet overdekte en overdekte markt dat grenst aan de Nickerie rivier.
Openingstijden en algemene informatie
De verse producten worden door de handelaren iedere dag (behalve op zondag) in alle vroegte aangevoerd. Je kunt er terecht voor alle soorten producten. ‘s Middags is de markt gesloten. Economie in Nickerie
Het hoofdbestaansmiddel is de landbouw. Hierin is vooral de rijstbouw van groot belang; Nickerie is de grootste rijstproducent van Suriname. Rijst wordt op grote en middelgrote schaal aangebouwd bij Wageningen en op kleine schalen in verscheidene vestigingen door het district. Daarnaast worden ook nog enkele andere exportculturen aangeplant, zoals bacoven (bananen) en suikerriet. Verder is de veeteelt, voornamelijk van runderen, maar ook van schapen, geiten, kippen en doksen (eenden), in Nickerie relatief belangrijk vergeleken met andere districten en vangt men vis in de zwampen (moerassen). Op enkele plaatsen wordt op kleine schaal aan bosbouw gedaan. Van industrie is nog weinig sprake. Er zijn houtzaagmolens en enkele bedrijven in de genots- en voedingsmiddelensector.
Rivierboten gebruiken de Nickerierivier vooral om rijst te vervoeren naar andere delen van het land. Dicht bij de monding in Nieuw-Nickerie is er een haven, waar vooral bacoven en rijst worden ingeladen in zeeschepen voor export naar andere landen. Kleinschalige visvangst draagt bij aan de economie van het district.

Nickerie - Suriname
In deze film krijgt u een impressie over Nieuw Nickerie - de tweede en en belangrijkste stad van Suriname . De filmmaker laat u verder enkele indrukken zien van het district Coronie.
Van de districten in het westen van Suriname is Nickerie de grootste en een van de belangrijkste districten. Het district Nickerie is het makkelijkst te bereiken via de oost-west verbinding. De route naar Nickerie gaat via de districten Saramacca en Coronie. Beide districten worden via de Coppenamebrug met elkaar verbonden. Coronie met de hoofdplaats Totness staat bekend om zijn kokospalmen. Uit de noten maakte men vroeger op grote schaal kokosolie. Deze industrie is de laatste jaren wat afgenomen. De omgeving heeft een idyllische uitstraling en kenmerkt zich door het landelijke en rechte hoofdweg dwars door het district.Opvallend zijn de vele mooie kerkjes die op een bepaald moment het straatbeeld lijken te bepalen. De plaats leent zich uitstekend als tussenstop voor een drankje, een versnapering of even om de benen te strekken.
Na een bustocht van ongeveer 3 uur bereikt u de hoofdstad van het district Nickerie, genaamd Nieuw Nickerie. Nieuw Nickerie, ook wel de tweede stad van Suriname genoemd, ligt vlakbij het buurland Guyana. Midden in het centrum is de Openbare Markt. Bij een wandeling over de markt ziet u onder andere een grote hoeveelheid tropische groenten en vruchten. Een goede gelegenheid om eens wat uit te proberen, u zult verrast worden. Bij de aangrenzende eettentjes kunt u voor weinig geld een goede maaltijd scoren. Een bezoek aan de markt wordt hierdoor al gauw een toeristische attractie. Bij een bezoek aan de Zeedijk, kunt u genieten van een fantastisch uitzicht over de Corantijn rivier. Deze ligt vlakbij de Atlantische oceaan.
Nieuw Nickerie heeft verschillende verblijfsmogelijkheden. Als u op eigen gelegenheid deze plaats bezoekt, dan doet u er verstandig aan om uw verblijfsaccommodatie vanuit Paramaribo te regelen. Vooral in de weekeinden kunnen de hotels aardig vol zijn. Als u uw verblijf in Nickerie nog interessanter wilt maken, dan is een boottochtje naar het Bigi Pan gebied aan te bevelen. Bigi Pan ligt in het kustgebied van Suriname tussen de districten Nickerie en Coronie. Het is een prachtig natuurgebied met een open water oppervlakte van circa 1000 hectare. Een groot aantal beroepsvissers zorgen, vanuit hun op palen staande kampjes, voor de visvangst. Dit natuurgebied staat internationaal bekend om de enorme bio diversiteit, omdat verschillende soorten trekvogels hier een veilig onderkomen vinden voor het leggen van eieren. Het is o.a. het leefgebied van de rode ibis, visarenden, steltlopers en sterns. Bigi Pan is een bijzonder interessant natuurgebied voor iedereen. Met name sportvissers en vogelspotters komen hier zeker aan hun trekken. Houd u vooral uw camera gereed, want hier kunt u op de meest onverwachte momenten de mooiste plaatjes schieten.
De film maakt onderdeel uit van de één uur durende dvd “Suriname an exciting part of the Amazon”. Met de vele highlights die in deze film aan bod komen, kunt u zich uitstekend oriënteren op uw verblijf in Suriname.

Nickerie:
Nickerie is a district of Suriname, on the north-west coast. Nickerie's capital city is Nieuw-Nickerie. Another town is Wageningen. The district borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the Surinamese district of Coronie to the east, the Surinamese district of Sipaliwini to the south and Guyana to the west.
Nickerie has a population of 36.639 (2004) and an area of 5,353 km2.[1] Nickerie's population includes East Indian, Javanese, Afro-Surinamese, Chinese, and Portuguese people.
Nickerie is bordered with Guyana. There is no bridge between the countries, but there is a ferry that sails between Molson Creek in Guyana and South Drain
In 1718, Dietzel became the first known person to settle in the area. In 1797, governor Juriaan François Frederici approved the first plantation in Nickerie. A large number of Scottish and English settlers arrived in the area during the British Occupation, and primarily grew cotton and coffee.
The capital Nieuw Nickerie was built in 1879 after the former center of the district, Nieuw Rotterdam, was destroyed by floods.
The name Nickerie is probably based on Neekeari which was first reported by Teenstra in 1596 for an indigenous tribe living the area.
The name also appears in Robert Dudley's The Voyage of Robert Dudley to the West-Indies, 1594-1595.
Nickerie had a poor connection to Paramaribo. It was not until 1960s when the East-West Link was constructed linking Nickerie with the rest of the country.
Agriculture:
During the 19th century, Nickerie became home to many plantation. The abolition of slavery, transformed the area in smaller scale farming. In the late 19 century, many plantations start to shift to balatá production whose latex was used for driving belts and isolation, but started to become obsolete in the early 20th century.
In 1955, a project of poldering started, resulting in an increase of cultivatable land.
Bananas and rice are the main crops grown in Nickerie. Some rice had been grown previously, but during the 20th century, Nickerie became the centre of the rice in Suriname, mainly due to the East Indian and Javanese contract workers.
Tourism:
Nieuw Nickerie is started to develop as a tourist area. There are quite a number of hotels in the city, and the nearby Bigi Pan Nature Reserve opened opportunities for ecotourism.
In 1972, the Hertenrits Nature Reserve was founded. In the reserve there are five terpen (artificial mounts). They were located in the middle of the swamp, and remains from the pre-Columbian era had been discovered in the mounts. Hertenrits has been added to the Bigi Pan reserve.
