Sudan - Meroë pyramids

An updated and extended version of this video clip can be found here:

Meroë is an ancient city on the east bank of the Nile approximately 200 km north-east of Khartoum, Sudan. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Kush for several centuries. The site of the city of Meroë is marked by more than two hundred pyramids in three groups, of which many are in ruins. They have distinctive size and proportions of Nubian pyramids.

We visited Sudan on our overland trip by car (a Toyota LandCruiser 4WD campervan) from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our channel for hundreds of clips. More clips of Sudan can be found here:

WOWOW - TODAY WAS A TOP 10 TRAVEL DAY OF MY ENTIRE LIFE.

I made it to SUDAN, country #173 and one that I've long desired to visit for many reasons, but none more than to see the ancient (forgotten) pyramids. There are more pyramids (200+) in this tiny section of Sudan than in all of Egypt, and they are just as old and impressive!

My Sudanese friends and I took a camel ride to explore around the area and we were the only ones around. Not another soul in sight.

If you ask me, this experience was about 10X more enjoyable than the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, which is now flooded by tour bus after bus. Add this place to your list!

Found Temples and Pyramids in Sudan

ANCIENT TEMPLE & PYRAMIDS OF MEROE
### All footage shot and edited with a smartphone (Tecno Camon CX) ###

There are over 200 pyramids in Sudan which predate the once in Egypt.

Went camping with some Sudanese, Kenyan and American friends and it was one of the most incredible times I've had here in Africa. The purpose of the camp trip was to promote camp life and adventure to Sudanese people, particularly women who have a disadvantage in doing what they love to do as their culture gives them a lot of restrictions, psychologically and lawfully.

We pitched our tents under the night sky with bright stars atop The ancient civilization of Meroe. Also got to climb Jebel Barkal where we oversaw the temples and the Nile. Temperatures reached a staggering 45 degrees but it was totally worth it.

Meroë Pyramids in Sudan - August 2021

August 4, 2021 ** Meroë Pyramids ** Sudan

I had the entire site completely to myself. Meroë was an ancient city on the east bank of the Nile about 6 km north-east of the Kabushiya station near Shendi, Sudan, approximately 200 km north-east of Khartoum.

Near the site is a group of villages called Bagrawiyah (Arabic: البجراوية‎). This city was the capital of the Kingdom of Kush for several centuries from around 590 BC, until its collapse in the fourth century CE.

The Kushitic Kingdom of Meroë gave its name to the Island of Meroë (the name given under the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, based on its location near the confluence of the Blue and White Nile Rivers), which was the modern region of Butana, a region bounded by the Nile (from the Atbarah River to Khartoum), the Atbarah and the Blue Nile.

The city of Meroë was on the edge of Butana. There were two other Meroitic cities in Butana: Musawwarat es-Sufra and Naqa. The first of these sites was given the name Meroë by the Persian king, Cambyses, in honor of his sister who was called by that name. The city had originally borne the ancient appellation Saba, named after the country's original founder.

The eponym Saba, or Seba, is named for one of the sons of Cush (see Genesis 10:7). The presence of numerous Meroitic sites within the western Butana region and on the border of Butana proper is significant to the settlement of the core of the developed region. The orientation of these settlements exhibit the exercise of state power over subsistence production.

The Kingdom of Kush which housed the city of Meroë represents one of a series of early states located within the middle Nile. It was of the earliest and most impressive states found on the African continent (along with Ancient Egypt). Looking at the specificity of the surrounding early states within the middle Nile, one's understanding of Meroë in combination with the historical developments of other historic states may be enhanced through looking at the development of power relation characteristics within other Nile Valley states.

The site of the city of Meroë is marked by more than 200 pyramids in three groups, of which many are in ruins. They have the distinctive size and proportions of Nubian pyramids.

Here's the official site from UNESCO with site descriptions, maps, and photos:

Sudan - Pyramids of Meroe (More pyramids in Sudan than you can count)

What can I say about Sudan? Well it's beautiful, and so were the people we met in Sudan.

The main tourist attraction if you can call it that (we didn't meet any other tourists) were the Nubian pyramids of Meroe. But before we get on to those and other historical sites we had to visit Khartoum (the capital city of Sudan) to rest and to get our permits for the various locations.

We camped out at the university campus in Khartoum and were honoured to meet and share breakfast with the football team, we were invited into homes for meals, shown where the Blue Nile and White Nile met, offered help around every corner, it truly was a pleasure.

The completely unique experience of being the only people to be exploring the pyramids of Meroe and the archaeological digs at various temple locations is one we will never forget. Meroe and Sudan is one of the places that I would have loved to go back to and visit again one day, hopefully it will be safe to do so again one day.

Land Rover Africa Overland
--------------------------------------------
Twenty years ago my wife and I packed up our life in the UK and set off to drive overland in our Land Rover Defender with the aim of driving all the way to the Cape Town in South Africa, a journey which will take us from coast to coast along the length and breadth of Africa.

Because this journey was twenty years ago, there were no smartphones, no google maps, and no digital cameras. The photos taken on the journey were on transparencies, designed to be projected. I have taken photographs of some of those slides for the purpose of showing in this video.

HI THERE! WE ARE JILL AND CHRIS!
In 2017 we packed up our life, and quit the 9-5 to head out into the world. We came with no expectations, we only wanted to experience life. Since then, we have packed more fun and adventure into our lives than we ever could have imagined.

Being on the road now for over three years, has brought with it the freedom to explore what it is that we really want to do with our lives, the time to pay attention to the things that are truly important to us, and the adventure to really make life fun and interesting once again.

We left seeking an exciting life, and we have not been disappointed!

We mostly travel without a plan, we just let the chips fall where they may, then figure it out as we go. We find that in doing this, the most unexpected and interesting opportunities present themselves, and it truly keeps us on our toes.

The Forgotten Pyramids of Meroë in Sudan

In late October 2021, we were thrilled to visit the Nubian pyramids of Meroe in north Sudan. We viewed them here - in the beautiful red-orange hue of sunset. A fitting time to visit the burial place of the Nubian kings.

Up on a desert cliff not far from the banks of the Nile River, lies nearly 200 ancient pyramids — many of them tombs of the kings and queens of the Meroitic Kingdom which ruled the area for more than 900 years (750 BCE to 350 CE) . The Meroë pyramids, smaller than their Egyptian cousins, sport narrow bases and steep angles on the sides. They are deeply inspired by the culture of Pharaonic Egypt.
