The St. Kitts Scenic Railway takes passengers on a 3-hour tour that makes a 30-mile circle around the beautiful Eastern Caribbean island of St. Kitts, with 18 miles by narrow gauge train and 12 miles on sightseeing buses. Is this vlog a paid promotion with the cruise line? No, we have never worked with a cruise line before (I doubt they even know who we are ????). If that ever changes, we will be sure to let you know in the video.
What are those black pouches around your neck? We use the lanyards to carry some camera equipment, but many cruisers like to wear lanyards to hold their room key card.
What camera do you use? We typically use the DJI Pocket II, however, when we are in the water we use the Go Pro Hero 9, and in Alaska we occasionally used the Nikon P1000 for wildlife shots. While on holiday in the Caribbean we visited the St.Kitts Scenic Railway. This was our third visit since 2009.
On this occasion I decided to video some of our day on the train.
Not having a tripod made it difficult on times to hold my camera still, as the train rocked back & fo.
We also experienced a heavy downpour of rain on our journey.
This narrow gauge St. Kitts Scenic Railway is one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. Originally built between 1912 and 1926 to deliver sugar cane from the fields to the sugar mill in Basseterre, the Last Railway in the West Indies now provides a fascinating way for visitors to see the island from the comfort of modern passenger train cars and sightseeing buses.
The 18 mile Railway hugs the Northeastern coastline where spectacular vistas of the ocean, surf, cliffs and lush vegetation surround you.
The train rolls across tall steel bridges spanning canyons, and winds through small villages and farms.
Dark green rain forests are skirted by rippling fields of sugar cane, with the volcanic cone of Mt. Liamuiga rising above the railway.
The railway owns and operates three diesel-hydraulic locomotives of the PKP class Lyd2 built in Romania.

St. Kitts besitzt eine der wenigen noch befahrenen Zuckerrohr-Bahnstrecken der Karibik. Fast 30 Kilometer geht es an der atlantischen und karibischen Küste entlang.
Die Föderation St. Kitts und Nevis ist ein Inselpaar der Kleinen Antillen in der östlichen Karibik. Sie zählt zu den kleinsten Staaten der Welt. Umso erstaunlicher ist, dass St. Kitts eine Eisenbahn besitzt.
Die Schmalspurbahn bauten die ansässigen Plantagenbesitzer zwischen 1912 und 1926 für den Transport von Zuckerrohr in die Fabrik nach Basseterre. Doch auch auf St. Kitts verlor das karibische Zuckerrohr den Konkurrenzkampf mit der europäischen Zuckerrübe. Der Güterverkehr wurde eingestellt, konnte aber nahtlos durch die St. Kitts Scenic Railway ersetzt werden.
Die amerikanischen Bahn-Besitzer, die vor allem auf Fahrgäste von Kreuzfahrtschiffen setzen, beschafften stärkere Loks, die in Polen Zuckerrüben transportierten. Jetzt ziehen sie Doppelstockwagen, die einen freien Ausblick auf Meer und Berge ermöglichen.
Die Loks aus der Zuckerrohrzeit sind dem Verfall preisgegeben, genauso wie die alte Fabrik. Die hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit beschleunigt den Vorgang. Nur die Hunslet-Lok Nr. 15 ist noch fahrtüchtig. Der Lokführer setzt sie ein bei Wartungsarbeiten an den Gleisen und vier langen Brücken und erinnert sich gerne an die Zeit zurück, als sie als stärkste Lok des Fuhrparks zahlreiche Wagen mit Zuckerrohr ziehen konnte.
Wir wandeln auf den Spuren der ehemaligen Zuckerrohrbahn und erleben gemeinsam mit den Eisenbahnern der St. Kitts Scenic Railway so manches Schienenabenteuer.

The Scenic Railway in St. Kitts is an 18 miles (29 km) long narrow gauge railway line along the coast line on the island of Saint Kitts with a track gauge of 762 mm (2 ft 6 in). The original track was laid from 1912 to 1926, to deliver sugar cane from the plantations to the sugar mill in Basseterre. The sugar mill was built by a group of investors in 1912, to reduce the processing cost and increase profitability by applying the principle of economies of scale since the sugar price drop caused by the world-wide introduction of sugar beet.
Saint Kitts, also known more formally as Saint Christopher Island, is an island in the West Indies. The west side of the island borders the Caribbean Sea, and the eastern coast faces the Atlantic Ocean. Saint Kitts and the neighbouring island of Nevis constitute one country: the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The island is one of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. It is situated about 2,100 km (1,300 mi) southeast of Miami, Florida. The land area of St. Kitts is about 168 km2 (65 sq mi), being approximately 29 km (18 mi) long and on average about 8 km (5.0 mi) across.
Saint Kitts has a population of around 45,000, the majority of whom are mainly of African descent. The primary language is English, with a literacy rate of approximately 98%. Residents call themselves Kittitians.

July 7, 2023 - Lovely 2-hour trip along the entire North and Northeast coast of the island of Saint Kitts, on a refurbished 'sugar train' rolling on original track laid in 1920's to carry sugar cane from plantation to port in Basseterre.

Azamara ONWARD - ST KITTS Scenic Railway
When Azamara Onward visited St Kitts in January we boarded the St Kitts Scenic Railway for a tour of the beautiful island.
During sugar production a narrow-gauge railway was built along the coast to collect the sugar cane from the plantations and transport the sugar to a newly build central sugar mill in Basseterre, the sugar mill was built by a group of investors in 1912 to reduce sugar processing cost by applying economies of scale and thus increasing profitability. With the worldwide introduction of sugar beet, the sugarcane industry the island suffered financially and in 2005 sugar ceased to be produced on St Kitts.
A privately owned company, unusual in that is a partnership between the government and private enterprise started to operate tourist trains around the island on the old narrow-gauge track. The St Kitts Scenic Railway was born.
