Have you ever heard of Lake Retba, the Pink Salt Lake in Senegal? To the locals, it's known as Lac Rose. I was amazed by its beautiful bright pink color. It is an extremely salty body of water that locals need to lather in shea butter before jumping in. Our group was lucky to be the only tourists here during the time. With that comes all the merchants coming and asking for you to purchase their products. It is honestly depressing to see how much the Pandemic has affected the local economy and especially tourism.

SENEGAL: Stunning PINK LAKE ???? (Lac Rose), the 'Dead Sea' of Africa
Dakar, Senegal - amazing Pink Lake (Lake Retba) in Senegal, Senegal's Lac Rose. Let's travel to Senegal and let's visit the city of Dakar and the incredible Pink Lake (Lake Retba). We will travel for about an hour away from Dakar, the capital city of Senegal in West Africa where there is an unusual lake (Pink Lake or Lake Retba) that will surely catch the unsuspecting visitor’s eye because of its unusual yet vivid pink colour. Lake Retba (or Lac Rose as it is known by locals) is separated only by some narrow dunes from the Atlantic Ocean and, as expected its salt content is very high. Its salinity content compares to that of the Dead Sea and its distinct pink colour is caused by the Dunaliella salina bacteria which produce a red pigment in order to absorb the sunlight, thus giving the lake its unique colour.

Dakar is the capital of Senegal, in West Africa. It’s an Atlantic port on the Cap-Vert peninsula. Its traditional Médina quarter is home to the Grande Mosquée, marked by a towering minaret. The Musée Théodore Monod displays cultural artifacts including clothing, drums, carvings and tools. The city’s vibrant nightlife is inspired by the local mbalax music.

LAC ROSE ET PLAGE DAKAR (SÉNÉGAL)
Le lac Retba, plus connu sous le nom de lac Rose, doit sa renommée à sa teinte qui vire du rose au mauve en fonction de l’intensité des rayons solaires, et également au rallye Paris-Dakar dont il constituait l’ultime étape.
Le lac Rose est un grand lagon peu profond, situé à quelques centaines de mètres de l’océan et entouré de dunes et de filaos. Il doit sa couleur à la présence de micro-organismes et à la forte concentration de minéraux.
Jour et nuit, il y règne une intense activité de centaines de personnes se livrant à l’extraction du sel (300 grammes dans chaque litre). Enfoncés jusqu’à la taille, les hommes arrachent les croûtes de sel déposés sur le fond et remplissent des pirogues que des femmes portent, à intervalles réguliers, sur la berge. Le sel récolté est ensuite vendu à des intermédiaires qui le commercialisent en ville.

A place where salt is gathered through nets by small boats.
Large heaps of salt are seen on the second part, then put in 20-kilo bags, mainly used for food or roads (for cold countries).

다카르에서 1시간쯤 거리에 세계적인 소금호수가 있다. 물 빛깔이 붉다고 해 장미호수 라고도 부르는 곳이다. 장미호수는 요르단의 사해와 같이 진한 염호다. 염도가 보통 바닷물의 10배나 된다고 하니 정말 놀랍다. 장미호수도 세네갈에 오면 반드시 들려 가야한다는 여행의 필수코스다. 그래서 늘 사람들로 붐빈다. 관광객들을 위해 마련된 배~ 이 배를 타면 소금케는 것을 직접 체험 할 수 있다. 배를 타고 가까이서 보니 물 색깔이 더 붉게 보였다. “나룻배에 소금이 가득 차면, 강가로 실어 나릅니다. 거기 가져가면 여자들이 와서 옮겨가죠. 소금 만드는 일은 아주 어려워요. 1리터의 물에서 380 그람의 소금을 얻어내요 380그람이요. 장미호수의 물은 햇볕을 받아서 진한 핑크 빛이에요.“ 1리터의 물에서 그렇게 많은 소금이 나온다니 놀라웠다. 햇살에 비친 맑은 물은 마치 거울 같았다. 장미호수는 밑바닥을 긁으면 소금이 모래처럼 나오는 천혜의 염전이다. 이 별난 염전을 보기위해 많은 사람들이 이곳을 찾는다. 호수 한가운데 에서 소금 캐는 사람을 만났다. 삽으로 열심히 바닥을 파는 사람들~ 보기에도 힘들어 보였다. 등에 핀 소금 꽃을 보면서 여기가 소금호수 라는 게 실감났다. 삽으로 퍼올리는 게 어떻게 생겼을까 궁금했는데 석회와 같은 이것이 바로 소금이 된다.

Visited Lake Retba called Lac Rose or Pink Lake in Senegal ;)
Chartered taxi took me 1.5 hours from the city center of Dakar.
It looked brown-ish from this video but actually looked quite pinky!
Best timing to see the lake is around 11am and sunny weather and strong wind make this lake even pinker!

ダカールから車で1.5時間で到着するラックローズでドローン飛ばしてみました。
天気と風、太陽の位置でピンクに見えるかどうかが左右されるようですが
ベストタイミングは11時前後らしいです。
動画では赤茶っぽいですが、実際にはピンクっぽくて結構普通に感動しました！

Hello everyone!
Another weekend, another trip! In this video, I am going to Lac Rose or Lake Retba. Unfortunately, the lake is not pink, but it was so much fun! We left Dakar around 10am on a Saturday and we arrived around noon I think. The first activity we did was get a tour on the Pink lake, which was interesting as you could see people extracting salt from the bottom of the Pink lake.
Then we headed to get lunch. After lunch, my friend Mariama and I went to the lake to get some drone shots. It looked like it was going to rain and we tried switching activities so that we wouldn't be on the quads during the rain. However, waiting for our turn to get on the quads took so long. So eventually, we did get caught in the rain. Which is why at the end of the quad tour, you cannot really hear what I am saying as the rain got into my camera.
After we came back from our tour around Lake Retba, we had to do some more waiting as the second part of our group actually had to go on the quads too. During this wait, Mariama and I actually went to the souvenirs shops to see what they were selling etc. (which you can see on my instagram highlights for Lac Rose). Then, I decided to drone one last time. This time I followed some quads with my drone and tried to show a little bit of the desert and camels.
Remember, Mariama and I booked this trip with Green Parcours. It cost about 40$/€ and included: transport to and from Lac Rose, lunch, the boat tour on the Pink Lake, a tour on the quads and access to the hotel's pool and games. The additional activities are a trip on the camels or horses.

After almost 3 years, I find myself back in Dakar, Senegal. I plan on staying in Senegal for about 3 months. Mostly to work on creating content, connecting with local creatives and to work on some personal projects such as my next Wolof class.

LAC ROSE: Lieu incontournable pour les Touristes.
Le lac rose encore appelé lac Retba, est l'une des principales attractions touristiques au Sénégal.
Lac Rose représentait il y a quelques temps la dernière étape du rallye Paris/Dakar, ce qui n'est plus le cas suite à une décision des organisateurs. Sa particularité réside sur le fait du changement de couleur dont il fait état tout au long de la journée en fonction de la lumière. Sa couleur rose est du à la présence d’un organisme microscopique, la cyanobactérie, qui développe un pigment rouge pour résister contre la forte salinité du lac.

Lac Rose / Lake Retba in Senegal
Lake Retba or Lac Rose lies north of the Cap Vert peninsula of Senegal, north east of Dakar.
It is so named for its pink waters, particularly visible during the dry season. The lake is also known for its high salt content, which, like that of the Dead Sea, allows people to float easily. The lake also has a small salt collecting industry and is often the finishing point of the Dakar Rally.
