The City of Jamestown St Helena - to Live, Work & Explore

Jamestown is the capital of St Helena Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The island is tiny and very remote, it’s most notable claim to fame is that French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here in 1815, where he died 6 years later.
Until recently St Helena was only accessible by ship, however, St Helena Airport began scheduled flights in 2017 and now weekly flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, keep the island connected with the outside world.

For anyone considering living or taking up a job opportunity on St Helena, this short film gives some insight to what you can expect to find in the island's capital, Jamestown.
Sampling the prestigious St Helena coffee, night swimming at the Jamestown pool, noisy street parades to celebrate the national day and spotting the colourful fish in the Castle Gardens fountain, are some of the activities to experience.
This video about Jamestown also includes shopping for groceries along Main Street, catching a taxi, climbing Jacob's Ladder and target shooting at the Jamestown Rifle Club, plus lots more!
We also include an overview of Jamestown’s history and how it came to be a city.
Filmed & produced in early 2023

Jamestown, St. Helena Island, South Atlantic Ocean | Part 1

St Helena Island - Ep. 24

The last home of Napolean and the current home of Jonathan the oldest living thing on earth! This special place isn't easy to get to, but it is worth it!!! My sources for this video are our amazing tour guide and sainthelenaisland.info. Sorry for the blank spot after the bank. I have a good photo of their currency, but something went wrong after I added the photos and uploaded the video.

Flying to St Helena Airport

This trip to the St. Helena Airport took place on 15 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. Here's a video with my thoughts on that situation:

This video is about flying to the St. Helena Airport. St. Helena Airport is one of the most challenging airports in the world. Less than ten commercial airline pilots are certified to land here!

At either end of the runway are massive cliffs, which create challenging wind conditions.

I’ve wanted to visit St. Helena for a long time. When the St. Helena Airport received its first commercial flight in 2017, the trip became far more viable for me. Before St. Helena Airport opened, a trip there required a five day boat trip just to get there.

St. Helena’s role in the Age of Exploration cannot be understated. The Portuguese used St. Helena as a secret base for restocking their ships (they left a heard of goats and planted citrus trees. It then became a key possession of the British East India Company before it was suddenly converted into a prison for the world’s most feared man – Napoleon. He died there, too. Today, it’s a fascinating British Overseas Territory accessed thanks to the St. Helena Airport.

In this video, we’ll explore the flight’s route, the passenger experience, and even peak behind the scenes at the St. Helena Airport to understand how it all works.

Here’s a link to the unedited take-off and landing footage:

Where is St Helena Island Island. One of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world

Where is St Helena Island. We are often asked this question and love telling the story. So we decided to make a short video showing where St Helena is, how to get there and why you want to go.

If you would like to find out more about St Helena, please subscribe to your channel as we have loads more for you to enjoy!

Measuring just 47 square miles or just 10 x 5 miles wide, it's located a little more than 1,200 miles from the coast of Africa, and 2 and half thousand miles from the South America. Home to around only 4-5 thousand friendly souls. With an estimated 20,000 or so Saints around the world. Saints is what people who come from St Helena are called. And that’s why we call yourselves The Saint Cooks.

We’re British citizens. As St Helena is one of the 14 British overseas territories around the world. It has been under British rule since 1658, having been discovered in 1502 by Joan da Nova for the portugese. He named the Island after Helena of Constaintinople.

Since 2017 you can now fly. From either Johannesburg or Cape Town in South Africa. It’s a morning flight taking around 6 hours to the Island, with a quick refuelling stop at Walvis Bay in Namibia. And then its a 4 hour return flight back to South Africa. Typically flights are every Saturday, and sometimes on Tuesdays depending on the travel season.

On St Helena You can go and visit the oldest, living land animal in the world!
Jonathan the tortoise! Who is officially he is 186 years old.

St Helena is probably best known because the french emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. He was exiled there after losting the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He died on the Island in 1821. By all accounts he didn’t enjoy his time as a prisoner on the Island. The houses where he stayed at the Briars and Longwood are now excellent museums which you can visit. You can also visit Napoleon’s grave in Sane’s Valley, a spot he picked myself.

Some other fascinating things about St Helena are. It has one the most expensive coffee’s anywhere in the world. Can see unique tropical scenery unlike anywhere else. Lush and stunning on the inside. And wonderfully rocky on the edges.

It is renowned for its friendliness. We Saints are very friendly and welcoming. And we like to feed you!

Thanks for watching!

Shenemere sailing and exploring the remote Atlantic Island St. Helena

Shenemere sails from Namibia to the isolated island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean; St. Helena. Several weeks waiting for a vital boat part to be delivered allowed us time to meet the saints and explore the island.

St Helena Documentary

The story of St Helena is a compelling one, both from an investment and tourism perspective. Investment opportunities and private sector growth on the South Atlantic island of St Helena are expected to boom following confirmation that the airport is due in December 2015 - currently, it takes 5 days to reach St Helena by boat from South Africa.

It is perhaps a sense of soon being able to grasp an almost unreachable dream that is proving so appealing to investors, hence the media theme of Getting there.

Will One Of The World's Most Remote Islands Get A Direct London Flight?

After reporting on Titan Airways medical relief flight from London to St. Helena last Sunday, it brought up the question of whether a regular service between the United Kingdom and the isolated island would make sense. The arrival of Titan Airways Airbus A318-100 marked the first time an Airbus aircraft has landed on St. Helena and now has the locals all talking about a possible air link to Europe.
