El Parque Nacional del Serengeti
Es la mayor expresión de la naturaleza africana. Es el más antiguo y célebre parque nacional de Tanzania, una enorme extensión de 14.763 kilómetros cuadrados de inmensas llanuras de sabana en la que los animales viven en total libertad, con una de las mayores concentraciones de grandes depredadores del planeta, en un hábitat apenas modificado por la acción del hombre. Se encuentra en el norte de Tanzania, al oeste del Great Rift Valley y limita por el norte con la Reserva Nacional de Maasai Mara, en Kenia. Establecido en 1940, fue declarado Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad en 1979, y en 1981 la UNESCO reconoce el espacio Serengeti-Ngorongoro como Reserva de la Biosfera.
En otro tiempo, las tierras del Parque Nacional de Serengeti fueron zonas de pastoreo del pueblo Maasai. El término Maasai para referirse al Serengeti podría traducirse como allí donde la tierra se prolonga eternamente o las llanuras infinitas.

Pero dejando aparte este fenómeno de inmensos rebaños migratorios y depredadores, Serengeti acoge durante todo el año ejemplares de la fauna más emblemática del continente y por supuesto en el se reúnen los Cinco Grandes Mamíferos: el león, el leopardo, el búfalo, el rinoceronte y el elefante. Fueron llamados así por los cazadores de antaño debido a que eran los más difíciles de abatir. Además, en el Serengeti se puede descubrir más a fondo la cultura de los Maasai, el pueblo que habita estas praderas desde hace siglos. Se trata de una cultura fascinante que ha conseguido sobrevivir casi intacta al impacto del hombre occidental.

We spent 15 days traveling between Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti National Park. Our stay at the Asilia properties was amazing and really allowed us to connect with Africa.

This series of five, amateur extended videos covers what we called Serengeti Expedition 2016. While the core focus of the trip was a self-drive overlanding and wildlife photography safari, we also trained for a mountain climb to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. As the team leader and driver of truck 1, I often took a bit of video with my smartphone as the real photographers were at work. The result . . . . 5+ hours of many many short videos that would likely only get deleted or take up valuable storage space on my computer. Instead, the short clips are being assembled into actual episodes (with my own variety of very amateur editing) in between other tasks and events here at home. While the production value may not be that of something you'll find on the NatGeo channel, we hope you enjoy these nonetheless.
Episode 4 covers days 10 and 11 of our overlanding adventure in Northern Tanzania. We spend this video with the massive elephant herds and mixed wildlife you will encounter inside Tanzania's Tarangire National Park. We spend the night at a Special Campsite (Private) called Kware and give a little bit of a taste of the kind of driving you will encounter when back in Arusha town as well.

Serengeti National Park Tours Video - In the vast plains of the Serengeti, natures mystery, power and beauty surround you like few other places. Its here that one of earths most impressive natural cycles has played out for eons as hundreds of thousands of hoofed animals, driven by primeval rhythms of survival, move constantly in search of fresh grasslands. The most famous, and numerous, are the wildebeest (of which there are some 1.5 million) and their annual migration is the Serengetis calling card.
During the rainy months of January to March, the wildebeest are widely scattered over the southern section of the Serengeti and the western side of Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Most streams dry out quickly when the rains cease, nudging the wildebeest to concentrate on the few remaining green areas, and to form thousands-strong herds that by April begin to migrate northwest in search of food. The crossing of the crocodile-filled Grumeti River, which runs through the parks Western Corridor, usually takes place between late May and early July, and lasts only about a week. Usually in August they make an even more incredible river crossing while leaving the Serengeti to find water in the Masai Mara (just over the Kenyan border) before roaming back south in November in anticipation of the rains. Besides the migrating wildebeest, there are also resident populations in the park and youll see these smaller but still impressive herds year-round. In February more than 8000 wildebeest calves are born per day, although about 40% of these die before reaching four months old.
