Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve are wonderful places to call home, but Spain comes calling with Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia, Malaga, and Seville. Which Is the Best Place to Live? | Spain vs Portugal ???????????????????? (2021)
Josh from ExpatsEverywhere takes on Tom to debate which country is better, Portugal or Spain. Watch as they go back and forth on eight different popular topics.
Tom and Josh met over a decade ago when they both were camp counselors at an English-based activity youth camp in Spain. Josh was living in Madrid and Tom always had a fascination with Spain. The following school year, Tom moved to Zamora, Spain and the two stayed in touch.
Tom has had jobs take him to both Brazil and Portugal so that he could use his language skill acquired in university. In 2010, Tom took an offer with his company to move to Porto, Portugal. Josh and Kalie were moving from Madrid, but they took one more opportunity to visit their friend and their favorite Portuguese city, Porto.
The three toured around and on two occasions might have stumbled around (the hill on Vila Nova da Gaia) as they strengthen their relationship.
Throughout the years, they've stayed in touch. Josh and Kalie made trips to visit Tom when he moved back to London, partially so they could visit Tom but mainly to watch their favorite soccer team in the world, Arsenal. (Don't tell Tom they said this!)
Josh finally convinced Tom to come out to Singapore while he and Kalie were there and they were able to do a mini tour of Southeast Asia together. Josh unfortunately also convinced the group to eat a tainted steamed bun sold by a street vendor in Vietnam, but that's a story for another day.
So it's been over 10 years since Josh was living in Madrid and Tom was living in Porto. Now, the roles are reversed. Josh is in Porto and Tom is in Madrid. Which country will they fancy as the better of the two? Is it Portugal or Spain? Either way, we hope you enjoy the commentary and allow it to help you decide where you would like to live one day.

I’m always amazed when people don’t know that Portugal is its own country and has almost nothing to do with Spain other than being on the same peninsula.
When I was moving to Portugal, I was asked multiple times if I was learning Spanish and had to educate even some already well-educated people that I was learning Portuguese because yes, Portugal has their own language.
Where does this idea that Spain and Portugal are somehow the same thing come from? It’s still a mystery to me, and it’s totally fine. I don’t mind if Portugal remains the best kept secret among all of us who get live and experience it ????
