Crossing Africa and the Sahara by Truck

This video documents a journey made across Africa and the Sahara Desert in 1959/60. It uses color slides shot during the journey and shows how images from the past can be given a new lease of life. This is not a journey I would care to make today.

Congo Safari: Journey to Odzala

We journey into Congo’s wilderness, leaving civilization far behind in Brazzaville. Our charter flight climbs above the tropical cloud, turning left as we cross the equator, to touch down on a grassy landing strip in the middle of nowhere. Our guides meet us on arrival, and we board safari vehicles for a journey along rugged dirt roads, deep into the heart of the rainforest, the home of gorillas, monkeys, parrots and Ngaga Camp, our base for three nights.

BOTSWANA TRAVEL DOCUMENTARY | 4x4 Safari Road Trip feat. Victoria Falls

Follow us on our road trip safari through southern Africa's wildlife paradise Botswana. We drove through most of Botswana, including all the wildlife-rich areas like the Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe Nationalpark including the Chobe Riverfront and the Kalahari. We explored the Makgadikgadi salt pans in the center of the country, the Gcwihaba Caverns in the West and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the south. We also shortly ventured into Zimbabwe to marvel upon the majestic Victoria Falls. We were lucky enough to spot most of the big, and many small, animals which call Botswana home. These include elephants, giraffes, lions, hippos, kudus, oryx, ostriches, honey badgers, bat-eared foxes, serval cats, warthogs, springboks, impalas and many more.

Congo Road Trip

Backpacking Congo - Road trip through the Democratic Republic of the Congo

4000 km in 1 month - a road trip through eastern Congo in November 2019. (truck, boat and mototaxi) From the southern bordertown Kasumbalesa to Lubumbashi and Likasi, then all the way to the north: Ngoya, Manono, Ankoro, Kabalo, Kongolo, Kasongo, Kindu, Ubundu, Kisangani, Lubutu, Walikale, Goma, Idjwi Island and Bukavu. Full trip report is available on my blog:

DRC is such a great country, especially the remote areas in eastern Congo are worth to visit. If you like adventurous travel, this is the place to be!

Driving through the Republic of Congo

After finally receiving my scooter in Franceville, Gabon I made the trip towards the Congo. But again, it wasn't without any lack of drama. I had two flat tires before I even made it to the border. I was planning on hitting the sand road of the Congo by about 8am, but with the flats, and the fact I was in the middle of nowhere, I didn't hit the sand until about 1030.
The sand road in the Congo was absolutely grueling. There were so many times driving the road towards Oyo that I just about quit and set up at the side of the road to sleep for the night. Following the sand day I crashed at the house of a Lebanese expat for the night and pushed on to Brazzaville.
Two days later, and I arrive at the outskirts of Brazzaville, Congo. But my visa expires today, so what will I do? Stay tuned.

Crossing Congo

It is a deep dive into the heartland of Africa, into the mysterious Democratic Republic of Congo. A dream of many backpackers and often cited as a dangerous country to travel. Moving from A to B in the DRC is an adventure for outsiders and still challenge for locals and not everything is true about what comes into your mind for Congo. Yes, it still struggles for peace in its eastern region. The UN and other organizations trying to stabilize and support the country and as many refugees from other countries flood over the border, it is a challenge to be faced here. Despite all these efforts, for me Congo resembles still an authentic and real Africa off the beaten track. Rarely a visitor crosses into the DRC and while in Congo for little bit over three weeks, I only met two other travelers - excluding two fellow travelers I met just at the start of my journey.

Finding sights on a map of this huge country is a challenge, but reaching them is even harder. My adventure begins along the border to Rwanda, climbing an active volcano and with a visit to the famous mountain gorillas in the Virunga National Park. Continuing in Kisangani, the touristy sights almost vanish and a historical-shaded drift on the Congo River begins. Following the call of the jungle, I leave the river and take a hard daytrip over the washed-away infrastructure of the north-western Congo. While a boat ride may take a couple of more days, maybe even weeks, I head to Mbandaka by plane before finishing the journey in Kinshasa, the shiny, even too shiny, capital of the DRC.

Day in the Life of an Amazon Jungle Tribe!

???? Tijuana Migrant Camps ►
✈️ How I Started Traveling ►
???? My New Food Channel ► @GarethEats

This is a day in the life of the indigenous Sápara tribe who live within the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Today, their population totals less than 700 people, across 22 communities, and they are constantly battling to keep their culture, traditions and territory in-tact in an ever pressing capitalist world.

The Sápara, also known as Zápara or Záparo, once occupied some 12,000 mi² between the Napo River and the Pastaza in the Amazon rainforest along the border of Ecuador and Peru.

Early in the 20th century, there were some 200,000 Zapara. From the year 2009 on the Ecuadorian Zápara call themselves Sápara. The official name is Nación Sápara del Ecuador (NASE).

The Sápara people have a distinct language, known as Sápara, which is considered critically endangered with only a few fluent speakers remaining. They have a unique cosmology that revolves around their close relationship with the natural world, viewing themselves as an integral part of the forest ecosystem.

They possess extensive knowledge of the medicinal properties of plants and have a profound understanding of the intricate balance of the rainforest.

However, the Sápara people face numerous challenges, including encroachment on their lands by extractive industries, deforestation, and the loss of their cultural heritage. Despite these pressures, the Sápara people continue to fight for their rights, seeking recognition and protection of their territory, language, and way of life. Efforts are being made to preserve their culture and support their sustainable practices, ensuring the survival and well-being of the Sápara people and their unique contributions to the world.

Journey to the Head Waters of the Yellowstone River Episode 1

Finding the upper head waters of the Yellowstone River in Wyoming on horseback. This journey will take us through the Bridger Teton & Shoshone Wildernesses. Up and over Deer Creek Pass down into the Thoroughfare Drainage to the Yellowstone River and Bridger Lake. Then up the river to the head waters where water starts on the mighty Yellowstone River. Then we will travel across the Buffalo Plateau and down Marston Pass to the South Fork of the Shoshone River, and travel out along the Canyons of the Shoshone River that Buffalo Bill help build in the 1880s

This will be a 3 episode video to show the massive journey it took to reach the head waters of the Yellowstone River where water starts and journey back. I tried to make a short version video of this journey but could not. It was just too wild, too big, and too grand of a landscape. So please watch all three episodes and enjoy this trip or Journey, to find the head waters of the Yellowstone River as we did.

We traveled by horseback over 3 mountain passes, three water sheds like the Yellowstone River that lead to the Missouri River. Head waters of the Snake River to the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean. Also the Shoshone River that continues down to the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers. We traveled by horseback 126 miles in some of the wildest county in the lower 48 starts. Enjoy our journey on the biggest screen you have.

Please comment and share your feedback with us. We would love to hear from you.

Be sure to like and share if you enjoyed this video. and above all thanks for tuning in. More wilderness horseback trips to come.

Stay curious and explore

Congo: What to see and where to stay

Changing the face of African travel, the Republic of the Congo has opened up Central Africa’s great equatorial rainforests and intrepid travellers can now walk through sunlit jungle in search of gorillas and chimpanzees, stake out salt licks to wait for shy forest buffalo and elephant, and sweep a spotlight around at night to look for rare antelope and stealthy predators.

With most of its population concentrated in the south and the capital Brazzaville, Congo has managed to keep most of its northern forests and wetlands intact, the epitome of which is the spectacular Odzala-Kokoua National Park. Here, over 13 000 km² of primary rainforest provides Central Africa’s most important sanctuary for lowland gorillas and forest elephants. Odzala’s best accommodation is a trio of luxurious fly-in camps called Mboko, Ngaga and Lango. It’s worth the effort to travel there: these sensitively designed eco-lodges deliver comfort and adventure in equal proportions, and something of a pioneering spirit fills the people who you meet there. Expert guides lead you along forest paths clouded with dazzling butterflies; boatmen take you down lazy rivers to the calls of monkeys and tropical birds.

The best game viewing is at a ‘bai’, a marshy forest clearing where open water, good grazing and vital minerals in the soil attract some of Africa’s hardest-to-see animals. Forest elephant, bush pig and forest buffalo wallow in the mud; leopard, hyena and even bongo, the rainforest’s largest antelope, slip in silently after dark. The most dramatic wildlife experience, however, is deep in the forest’s interior where lowland gorillas still live in unprecedented numbers. Finding them is tough work – the rainforest does not give up its secrets so lightly – but the reward is an hour in the company of a habituated gorilla family, complete with curious infants, moody teenagers and poker-faced silverbacks.

Raw, real and perfect for experienced safari travellers with a thirst for adventure, Congo is one of Africa’s newest travel destinations. It’s also one of the most under-developed, so take the uncertainty out of arranging a Congo safari and speak to us about creating an itinerary that delivers it as a complete stand-alone itinerary or in combination with other African safari destinations and the Indian Ocean islands.
