REUNION ISLAND: Ultimate Travel Guide to VOLCANOES & BEACHES in the Indian Ocean
This is the French paradise in Africa! Far away in the Indian Ocean is an incredible nature paradise island called La Réunion. Between Mauritius and Madagascar, this island has crazy white beaches, stunning volcanic landscapes, lush waterfalls and cosy colonial towns.
During our two week family holiday full of sun, beaches, hikes and great food, I show you all the highlights of La Réunion and all the top sights. At the airport in Saint-Denis we rent a car and drive to Boucan Canot, a hotspot near the best beaches. We visit the best snorkeling spot at Plage de l'Hermitage and drive down south to Saint-Pierre. We visit the volcanos at Piton de la Fournaise and see the best jungle waterfall Cascade de Grand Galet. Of course we brought the drone for perfect 4K footage. This video is the perfect guide for a family holiday to Reunion Island!
In the previous episodes you saw how we made a road trip from Cape Town to Kruger Park in South-Africa. We drove the Cape Namibia Route along the West Coast to look for animals in the Kalahari Desert. After that we crossed the border into Namibia, where we drove straight through the world's highest sand dunes in the Sossusvlei. We saw all the sights in Namibia and wend on for a safari in Etosha National Park. Lately we visited Botswana and Zimbabwe, to cross the border again back to South Africa. After the Kruger Park, we fly out of Johannesburg to take you island hopping on Mauritius and also the French island of La Réunion.
Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. La Réunion is already destination number 26, after Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines, Zanzibar & Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mauritius. We have also been away from home for one and a half year now. Follow us on this world tour, now in La Réunion and then to many more beautiful destinations across the globe! Réunion, which is also called Department of Réunion, is an island in the Indian Ocean that is a French overseas department and area. It is part of the Mascarene Islands and is about 679 km (422 mi) east of the island of Madagascar and 175 km (109 mi) southwest of the island of Mauritius. As of January 2023, there were 873,102 people living there.Saint-Denis is the country's capital and biggest city.
Before French refugees and colonial subjects moved to Réunion in the 17th century, the island was empty. Its warm climate led to the growth of a plantation economy based on sugar. East African slaves were brought in to work in the fields, and then Malays, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Indians were brought in as indentured workers. Today, most people are of mixed ancestry, and Réunion Creole is the most common language, even though French is still the only legal language.

Earlier you needed a Schengen visa to visit the island, however, the rules have been simplified for us, Indians (for stays of up to 15 days). All you need to do is -
1. Contact a local travel agency that is offering a package tour and they will then contact the agency on Reunion Island with a license to request visa waivers
2. Or apply to an incoming agency on Reunion Island for a visa waiver stamped form

► Reunion Island is a French department of the Indian Ocean. It is famous for its volcanic interior covered with rainforest, its coral reefs and beaches. Its most emblematic site is the Piton de la Fournaise, an active volcano that can be climbed and rises to 2632 m altitude. The Piton des Neiges, a huge extinct volcano, and the 3 calderas of Reunion (natural amphitheatres formed by volcanoes that have collapsed) are also climbing spots.
