Mount Ras Dashen and Mount Bwahit of Ethiopia. Aerial imagery video *virtual tour.
The Simien Mountains ስሜን ተራራዎች Simen and Semien, in northern Ethiopia, north east of Gondar in Amhara region, are part of the Ethiopian Highlands. They are a World Heritage Site and include the Simien Mountains National Park. The mountains consist of plateaus separated by valleys and rising to pinnacles. The highest Ethiopian mountain is Ras Dejen at 4,550 m with the second highest peak of Kidis Yared at 4,453 m; other notable peaks include Mount Biuat at 4,437 m.
A gelada in the Simien Mountains
Because of their geological origins, the mountains are almost unique, with only South Africa's Drakensberg range having been formed in the same manner and thus appearing similar. Notable animals in the mountains include the walia ibex, gelada, and caracal. There are a few Ethiopian wolves.

Ras Dashen ራስ ዳሸን, also known as Ras Dejen, is the highest mountain in Ethiopia and fourteenth highest peak in Africa. Located in the Simien Mountains National Park in the Amhara Region, it reaches an elevation of 4,550 metres (14,930 ft).
The English form, Ras Dashen is a corruption of its Amharic name, Ras Dejen, the term used by the Ethiopian Mapping Authority (EMA) which alludes to the traditional head or general who fights in front of the Emperor.

Mount Bwahit ቧሒት ተራራ or Buahit, Bachit, Buiheat is a peak of the Simien Mountains in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Its altitude is estimated at 4430 or 4437 m above sea level, making it the third highest mountain in Ethiopia and the 13th or 14th highest mountain of Africa. It is located about 16 km west of the highest Ethiopian mountain, Ras Dashen, from which it is separated by a 1,600 m deep gorge. The connecting ridge goes NNE over the Arkwasiye Pass (ca. 3635 m), eastwards over Kidis Yared, at 4,453 metres (14,610 ft) the second-highest mountain in Ethiopia, and SSE over the Metelal Pass at approximately 3730 metres above mean sea level to Ras Dashen.

The Grand Canyon of Ethiopia! The Simien Mountains National Park in Northern Ethiopia is an exotic setting with unique wildlife and breath-taking views on a landscape shaped by nature and traditional agriculture. The natural beauties of this region have always filled visitors from Ethiopia and abroad with awe. Gentle highland ridges at altitudes above 3600 meters above sea level (m asl), covered with grasses, isolated trees (Erica &bored) and the bizarre Giant Lobelia (Lobelia rhynchopetalum) are found on the high plateau that ends abruptly at 1000- to 2000-m deep escarpments.

The margins of this high plateau consist of precipitous cliffs and deep, canyon-style gorges. In some places, the escarpment forms small elevations that offer splendid natal lookout points. The spectacular views from the observation points at Gidir Got and lmet Gogo in the center of the Park offer unparalleled panoramas along the high plateau and down to the lowland areas. Given the right meteorological conditions, views reaching up to a hundred kilometers over the valleys and the terraces of the Tekeze lowland basin are no exception. Geologically speaking, the entire highlands of the Simien mountains consist of dark Trapp basalt and bright, soft turf. They alternate and constitute a massive complex that is more than 3000 m thick. This complex was formed by volcanic eruptions in the Tertiary Oligocene-Miocene Age some 20-30 million years ago; ever since, it has been going through processes of uplifting and erosion.

The main attraction of the Simien Moumains National Park is its biosphere: the steep cliffs and the cool climate at the altitude of the Erica tree line (3600 to 4000 m ash) have created conditions that are appropriate for the survival of an ibex species (Capra ibex wee) endemic to the Simien Mountains. Despite the severe restriction of their habitat over the last centuries, several hundred animals have survived up to the present. Apart from the Walya ibex, many other animal species are found in the Park, for example the endemic Simien fox or Ethiopian wolf (Canis .071817,51-3 simony’s), several birds of prey, the endemic Gelada baboon ( Theropithecusgelada), the Klippspringer (Oreotragus omotragus), and the bush buck (liagelphus scriptus). The rareness of these species formed the backbone of the concept for conservation of the area, which led to the establishment of the Simien Mountains National Park in 1969. Simien mountain national park the Frist park national in Ethiopia.
simien mountain established in 1966 and 1978 the world heritage site in Ethiopia.

The human population living in the area adds to the distinctiveness of this special natural environment. The traditional lifestyle of the rural population and their survival in a rather harsh climate and with scarce natural resources make for the most striking impressions a visitor will have when trekking in the Park and its surrounding rural area.

An eight day trek through the Simien Mountains, Ethiopia

Read the blog of this trek at:

The Simien Mountains are situated in the remote northern hinterland of Ethiopia and are the eroded remains of an enormous supervolcano which formed 30 million years ago. The north western part of the volcano has been heavily eroded by the tributaries of the Tekeze River, resulting in a 1,000m high escarpment. Below this dramatic escarpment the landscape has been eroded into towering buttes and mesas, volcanic pinnacles, gaping gorges and gullies. The Greek poet, Homer, fancifully imagined these landforms to be ‘The chess set of the Gods’.

Nature with Music - Simien Mountains, Ethiopia / 시미엔 산 에티오피아

Simien Mountains, Simien also spelled Semien or Simēn, mountains in northern Ethiopia, northeast of Gonder. In the range is Ras Dejen (or Dashen), the highest peak in Ethiopia at 4,533 metres. The region is the site of Simien Mountains National Park, which is home to a number of very rare species that include the walia ibex, found nowhere else in the world. The park was one of the first locations to be recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

Ethiopia - Lalibela & the Simien Mountains

We have finally crossed the Sahara desert, but the next country we went to still to this day is the most surprising country not just in Africa but that anywhere in the world that I have visited. Ethiopia.

Now partly from the 80s and Band-Aid when you think of Ethiopia you think of starving children, dry arid landscapes, nothing could be further from the truth. Ethiopia is a vibrant beautiful friendly if very troubled country.

We took a chance and headed north into Ethiopia. There was three key areas we wanted to see in the north Lalibela, Aksum and the Simien mountains.

So we headed to Lalibela first to see the amazing churches that have been carved in the shapes of crosses down into solid granite rock and limestone.

I really wanted to add the peak in the Simien mountains, which is mount Rash Dashen to the list of peaks that I've climbed in Africa. The whole Simien mountain range is a national park, there's just nobody there which is one thing that makes it fantastic.

While in the Simien Mountains we were on a quest to see the Simien Ibex (a mountain goat of sorts), the Ethiopian or Simien Wolf, and the Gelada Baboons. Will we be successful?

Land Rover Africa Overland
--------------------------------------------
Twenty years ago my wife and I packed up our life in the UK and set off to drive overland in our Land Rover Defender with the aim of driving all the way to the Cape Town in South Africa, a journey which will take us from coast to coast along the length and breadth of Africa.

Because this journey was twenty years ago, there were no smartphones, no google maps, and no digital cameras. The photos taken on the journey were on transparencies, designed to be projected. I have taken photographs of some of those slides for the purpose of showing in this video.
