David's Been Here Malawi heads out of Ntchisi Forest and embarks on the five-hour drive towards Nyika National Park. The country's north-most national park, Nyika sits at 2,400 meters above sea level and is home to a number of different wildlife. David enjoys the trip out with his two guides and prepares for his stay and adventure with Chelinda Lodge and Wilderness Safaris. Nyika National Park, Malawi: Offbeat Tourist Destination
Malawi is an offbeat tourist destination that has some of the best scenic splendours in Africa. Nyika is the largest national park in Malawi, that has a pictursque plateau on the shores of Lake Malawi. One side of this magnificent plateau forms the wall of the Great Rift Valley. The great domes of underlying hills have gentle slopes teeming with wildlife – making Nyika perfect for wildlife safaris, trekking and mountain biking.
While in malawi, you must visit Mulanje Massif mountain standing at around 3,000 metres. The dominating mountain is distinguished by giant basins of rock and narrow gullies cut by fast-flowing streams. Expect to encounter monkeys, hares, voles and a carpet of wildflowers as you meander through the valleys.
Lake Malawi is one of the largest lakes in the world. The lake has more tropical fish than any lake in the world and the freshwater diving is great. The biodiversity has been recognized by UNESCO, which has made Lake Malawi National Park, the world's first freshwater park, a World Heritage Site.

Driving through the night along the single lane dirt roads, David and crew not only spot owls, hares and antelopes, but also the elusive leopard. Nyika National Park
We stayed two nights at Chelinda Campsite. The scenery is beautiful and it looks like you're in Schotland. Green sloping hills were basically everywhere. There is a pine tree forest what is an excellent hideaway for leopards, antelopes and numerous birds. We also did a drive around the dams and saw different animals like roan antelope and bushbuck. At one of the highest viewpoints in the park, Chosi, we said goodbye to the park with a fresh cup of coffee and some cookies in our hands. Definitely a must see when in Malawi!

Visiting Nyika National Park is known as one of the most magical experiences in Malawi, and after a recent trip, we understand why. The landscape of rolling grasslands filled with wildlife is mesmerizing, unlike anything seen elsewhere in the country. Enjoy the views and plan a visit!

The Liwonde National Park is situated in Central Africa and is Malawi’s most well known game reserve.Up until 1962 unrestricted poaching and hunting almost entirely eradicated the wildlife population of the region but in 1969 it was designated as a game reserve and, in 1973, as a national park. The Shire River is the region’s lifeline and more than two thousand hippos inhabit a forty kilometre section of the park. The park’s elephants are no longer slaughtered for their valuable tusks and their numbers, too, are increasing substantially. At the park’s watering holes groups of animals repeatedly gather to drink, an ideal opportunity to observe animals in the wild. Thankfully, the Liwonde National Park is now a natural paradise once more.

Just over 50 years ago, the northwestern part of Malawi—an area of 1,250 square miles known as the Nyika National Park—was so unknown to the British (who were in charge at the time), that they sent explorer Laurens van der Post to report on it. He turned his mission to this vast escarpment into a best-selling book Venture to the Interior, describing the beautiful high rolling hills of grasslands dotted with zebra, antelope, orchids, and butterflies that make Malawi's largest national park well worth visiting. A Panoramic View Of Northern Nyika
Dynamite comes in small packages and despite being one of Africa’s smallest countries, Malawi offers visitors a variety of unique experiences. Despite being most associated with going on a safari or diving in the crystal-clear waters of one of Africa’s major Rift Valley lakes, the northern region of Malawi also has a couple of unexpected and lesser-known gifts up its sleeve.
As Malawi’s largest national park, gaining access to the far-flung reaches of this vast area can prove to be a challenge and today, Peace Parks Foundation’s Counter-Poaching Coordinator in Nyika, Norman English, is making it his mission to get to the north of Nyika.
With 4x4 mode activated, Norman makes his way up the tricky terrain to the top of the valley where he gets a panoramic view of the park.

The Nyika Plateau lies in northern Malawi, with a small portion in north eastern Zambia.
This Place is almost 550 Km from Lilongwe city, Malawi.
The place is very nice and silent.
We have stayed at Chilinda lodge/camp which is nice place with good felicities.

Expanding Rangers’ Skills In Malawi
In Malawi, 140 rangers and officers from Nyika National Park and Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve are sitting in a training session where they are learning about human rights, standard operating procedures and codes of conduct which will lay down the moral and ethical expectations that employees need to adhere to.
Sessions such as these help to equip rangers with valuable skills beyond that of their regular technical training. The knowledge learnt here will help ensure that they carry out their duties without infringing on the rights of the communities surrounding these protected areas.
Both Nyika National Park and Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve form a part of the Malawi-Zambia Transfrontier Conservation Area, where Peace Parks Foundation has been the official implementing agent since 2016, responsible for the planning and implementation of projects in the area. This could not have been done without the generous funding of the KfW Development Bank and participation from both the Malawian and Zambian governments.
