8 Reasons Why Americans LEAVE Costa Rica [Why I Left]

The TRUTH about living in Costa Rica: Why do so many Americans leave Costa Rica after moving there? In this video, I explain what causes expats to change their minds about retiring abroad and why I left Costa Rica after 8 years. Some of the initial reasons that people want to move to Costa Rica include the moderate climate, laid back lifestyle, fresh and healthy food, friendly people, beaches, medical tourism, and the low cost of living. But is Costa Rica really a safe and friendly country or is it actually dangerous and expensive? Once they arrive, many people realize that living in Costa Rica wasn't quite what they expected. Unfortunately, that results in people returning home quite soon after arriving.

After helping more than 500 foreigners move to Costa Rica and living there for eight years, this video explains the top reasons why people move back to the USA and why I left, too, so that you know more about what to expect BEFORE you get there. This is the real and sometimes dark truth about living in Costa Rica. What do you think are the biggest pros and cons of living in Costa Rica? Let us know in the comments.

S H O P M Y A M A Z O N S T O R E:

Costa Rica is the perfect place for you if you're a traveler who loves adventure seekers and nature lovers. Costa Rica is a country snuggled up near the south-central strip of Central America. There are over 120 volcanic sites throughout the country and 5 of those are still active and most popular.
We hiked the base of one of the most active and well-known in the country, the Arenal Volcano, which last erupted in 2010.

Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet and there is no lack of things to see whether you're interest is in plants, birds, large mammals, marine life- you get it all here! We spent a day hike in Manuel Antonio National Park and it was my first time seeing several sleepy sloths, monkeys, iguanas, etc in the wild and not in a zoo. Found naturally are also larger mammals like Ocelots, Jaguars, and Cougars.

If you're into snorkeling and scuba diving...surfing, Costa Rica is going to be your new favorite destination. You've got the 185 miles of Caribbean Sea coast on the east side and the 630 miles of Pacific Ocean on the west side and the narrowest point between the two is only like 75 miles so the diverse offerings are at a peak for you water babies out there.

A few of their most important exports are coffee, bananas, and pineapples and this is why you need to visit one of the MANY local farms in the country.

We visited an organic farm owned by a lovely family who not only gave us a lot of education about their trade but also took us on a tour of the farm and helped us get to work cooking our own yummy lunch based on not only what they grow there on the farm, but also what a typical Costa Rican meal would look like.

There are hundreds of waterfalls in the country and many offer hiking and swimming along the way.

Probably to most popular is La Fortuna Waterfall near the Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna local town. Some other waterfalls travelers like are:
1. La Paz Waterfall Gardens in the Cloud Forest outside San Jose.
2. Bajos del Toro Waterfall (over 300 feet tall!) hidden between two Poas and Rincon de la Vieja volcanos
3. Rio Celeste waterfall in the Tenorio Volcano National Park with the most beautiful blue waters I've ever seen!
4. Nauyaca Waterfall outside Dominical on the Pacific side of the country.
5. Llanos de Cortes waterfall outside the town of Liberia

Try some of the amazing adventure activities like surfing, hiking, skydiving, paragliding, and zip-lining.

Things NOT To Do in Costa Rica - Part 1

Exotic Costa Rica is known for its lush jungles, cool creatures and some of the finest beaches in the world. However beware of these 20 things NOT to do in Costa Rica.

1. Don't Feed the Monkeys
The adorable monkeys are a big hit with tourists, but feeding them diminishes their self-reliant survival instincts. They get lazy and don't get the exercise they need can become rather aggressive... Oh yeh and it's also against the law!

2. Don't Let Your Snake Guard Down
There are 22 venomous species of snake slithering around the country! In fact, it is estimated that there are two deadly snakes per hectare there!

3. Don't Forget to Shake Out Your Shoes
We're really not trying to scare you away, just be aware that the world's most toxic spider makes its home here and might be lurking, say... in your shoe! The Brazilian wandering spider is particularly prevalent in Corcovado National Park, and is a nightmare for arachnophobics.

4. Don't Stay at an International Chain Resort
Costa Rica is full of family-run B&Bs, sustainable eco-lodges and intimate guesthouses that often have more character and charm than the familiar chains do, and will give you a more authentic experience on your vacation.

5. Don't Expect Great Coffee!
Yes, Costa Rica grows some of the richest, boldest, most coveted coffee beans in the world. (reverb) However, most of the crop is for export, so the local cups of joe aren't necessarily homegrown!

Things NOT To Do in Costa Rica - Part 3

Here are 20 Things NOT To Do in Costa Rica - Part 3!

Number 11. Don't Forget the Insect Repellent
Costa Rica has its fair share of mosquitoes which can spread diseases like dengue or chikungunya. Beyond the health risks, they're just plain annoying and persistent, and insect repellent tends to be expensive and difficult to find once you're there.

12. Don't Expect to See Big Cats in The Jungle
Most travelers would love to see a jaguar, ocelot or puma in the wild on their trip to Costa Rica. These endangered cats are only found on reserves these days, (Tortuguero National Park, Corcovado National Park, La Selva or the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.) and even in these sanctuaries, it's a rare sighting.

13. Don't Forget to Bring Sunscreen
Costa Rica's many pristine sandy beaches are paradisaical. However, being only 10 degrees north of the equator, the sun is often very strong. Make sure you buy the sunscreen before you go, as it'll be cheaper.

14. Don't Tip in Restaurants
Tipping in restaurants in Costa Rica is not expected, and there is usually a 10% service charge included anyway. Unless you receive exceptionally good service, don't bother tipping in catering establishments.

15. Don't Disrespect Nature
Picking wild plants, pocketing seashells or damaging trees is a big no-no, and may get you in trouble. Most of the wildlife, particularly in the rainforests, is strictly protected by the government.
