SECRET NORTH KOREA | YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT IT'S LIKE

I'm just back from North Korea - this is what it's like. Imagine living like you were on a movie set. Welcome to Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. Imagine having to wake up everyday of your life and perform like you are on a movie set and if you don't - it could mean death?

This is real life North Korea today. I travelled to North Korea and filmed this so you can see what it's like.

Some of this footage is secretly filmed.

You'll get an idea of what it is like to travel to the most isolated country in the world. Visiting many places, including the capital Pyongyang and the poor countryside.

Please do not judge the North Korean people in this video. It is impossible to make a fully balanced view of the country by traveling there - on a controlled guided tour. This video is simply presented to give you an indication of my travel experience and my thoughts after returning.

North Korea is a unique, if not slightly weird experience. It was safer than many countries I've visited. Hopefully, this will give you another perspective on the DPRK.

Thanks for watching.

North Korean Auto Dealership

North Korea appears to have its own auto manufacturer. On a recent visit to the country, we toured the company's salesroom in Pyongyang. It was hard to discern what was real and what wasn't.

???? The Strange Land of North Korea (DPRK) ????

⛄ NORTHEAST PASSAGE ON ICEBREAKER ???? -
This is a film about a traveller in the strange land called North Korea or officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Tours to the DPRK are tightly scheduled and normally include a visit to the demilitarised zone, museums and statues to Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il, Pyongyang’s amusements parks, chandelier-laden metro system and showcase entertainment facilities such as the Circus and the SchoolChildren's Palace. In addition to these, I took a flightseeing flight on a Mi-17 helicopter over the DPRK's capital city of Pyongyang. As well, as my tour was an extended one, it also went the northeast of the DPRK to the tri-country area around the Rason Special Economic Zone where the DPRK, China and Russia conjoin.

The cult of the Kims is perhaps the most extraordinary feature of the DPRK. Images or statues of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il are found everywhere. These graven images are effectively worshipped. This film shows scenes of the veneration of the Kims (Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il) that were witnessed.

The government guides control both what you can see and also what you can take photographs of. If you take a photograph of the military, construction or something that they feel does not portray the DPRK in a positive light then they force you to delete the photograph. On exiting the country, the border guards also reviewed photographs to see if they conformed to the aforementioned standards. Despite these restrictions, this film contains images that accurately portray the state of the country as I saw it.

Wolhyang General Store in North Korea - Part 2 (Honda Motorcycle)

Please, READ THE DESCRIPTION!

January 13, 2016 I visited the WolHyang shop located in WolHyang District, near the Arch of Triumph downtown Pyongyang. The shop is frequently visited by foreign tourists, in this store there are available a variety of souvenirs such as artwork, herbs and so forth. My several visits to the store with my family or while I served as a photographer for several foreign delegations I took them to visit this store. In this store, it is allowed to take pictures and videos. The employees are also friendly and they allowed to take photos together. For this time I tried to take a video, my wife and I want to buy an embroidery painting but the kind of painting that I want is not available then my wife bought some Tea Ginseng. Several waitresses noticed my GoPro camera, but they don’t mind and thought it was a pocket camera.
=====================
Since I came to Pyongyang in November 2012 until I left Pyongyang in March 2016 I got so many experiences.

I just wanna share a bit of my life experience in North Korea, mostly in Pyongyang. We are foreigners (Diplomats, Expatriates) who live in Pyongyang can roam freely around Pyongyang, and diplomats got more privileged than other expatriates.

There are also many Americans (USA), Canadians, Korean American who works as teachers and professors in Pyongyang.

Foreigners can travel to other cities outside Pyongyang, but we must request permission to Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Korea.

Since I lived in North Korea, I already travel to other cities in Northern, Western, Southern and Eastern side. Sometimes I travel with a minder, sometimes I just drive my car by my own and with my family (without a minder),

#NOTE: I am not a diplomat and didn’t work for embassy.

What The Motorcycle Diaries Teaches us about Travel

I find that depictions of travel in media are often over-romanticized, failing to address the difficult questions that our increased freedom of international travel presents to us. It may seem that the beautiful 2004 adaptation of The Motorcycle Diaries -- Ernesto Che Guevara's famous South American travel memoir -- falls into this trap. But I think that this movie and its original text highlight some surprisingly nuanced ethical questions about traveling across borders and cultures.

This is another video essay that is inspired by a unit in my World Literature class, and I hope that it is a fitting and thought-provoking look at this great film!

Bike Tour in North Korea: Day 2 & 3 - Pyongyang Impressions and Highway Freedom

In the Autumn of 2019, Behind Handlebars and Above Borders arranged the first ever Danish bike tour in the country of North Korea. For six days, a group of 7 travelers was going to both explore the capital of Pyongyang, but also bike around the much more undocumented country side. A truly remarkable experience that gave an incredibly insightful view into a country that not many people get to take a look inside.

----

In the second video - incapsulating the 2nd and 3rd day of the trip - I talk about some of the experiences in Pyongyang, and then we finally get on the bikes. And what a start to the biking it was!

1350km: China Motorcycle Diaries

This video captured the journey of a group of Chinese migrant workers riding on their motorcycles from Guangdong province to Guizhou provinces, returning to their hometown to celebrate the Chinese New Year. On their journey, they have came across a few interesting, funny and sometimes thrilling moments, but no matter the harsh weather and road condition, they had helped each other out of trouble, and had return home safely and just in time to celebrate the New Year with their family.

Motorcycle Diaries - A journey to the Highest Village in the World

Together with my friend Doove we embarked on a trip to South America in the search of a Motorcycle Adventure.

We flew to Peru with the plan to drive from the desert in the Pacific Ocean to La Rinconada (the highest village in the world at 5,100m above sea level).

Our journey started off in Arequipa then through the Panamerican Highway towards the desert of Nazca and Ica. We then climbed up the Andes and towards the ancient city of Machu Picchu. After that we headed east, towards the high altitude plains of the remote north-eastern Peru where eventually we made it to the dodgy gold mine that is La Rinconada, and sneaked into Bolivia for a beer. The end of our trip lead us to Puno and the highest lake in the world and eventually we made our way through the volcanic landscapes back to Arequipa.
